Anyone know if Circuit City is also doing the Buy on get one free on the Disney/Buena Vista BR?

I didn't see them listed in the new ad.

But seriously, all those movies over at Best Buy suck. Really, you're not missing much.

Oh man, I'm gonna be so busted this week. With the Frys B1G1, BB, CC, Target and J&R all having sales (some are better than others and some have different selections). Good thing I have no limit on my American Express card.

Son of a b*tch! I was at work (BB) and talked to my floor leader (who sees tomorrows ad before me) and I said "Hey, I heard that Movie Stop has a bogo offer on some blurays, I'm gonna head there after work unless you'll match it here for me." She looked at me and said no. Now I find out there's a better selection at my own work starting tomorrow!

Don't get me wrong, I got some good movies that I haven't seen. But I wanted to get Open Season because it looks so darn good and the guy at movie stop said that movie wasn't part of his promo. 90% of those others listed were available. Now I don't know who to chew out... the movie stop guy or my floor leader.... I'll do both!

Edit: Called both, Movie Stop has a smaller selection than what BB &/or CC will have tomorrow. And my floor leader didn't know about the promo so all is cool...ish.

I'm not trying to start something here. The fact of the matter is a lot of people buy a lot of movies sight unseen. My job requires me to see most of the movies that come out these days, and I feel the need to let people know when I think they're making a mistake. On the flipside, if a movie is really good, I have no problem pimping it to no end.
Transformers? Buy that. Money well-spent.

But out of the 14 movies listed in Best Buy's ad, I've seen 11 of them. 8 just flat out suck. Pearl Harbor was good, but it's not the director's cut. That leaves 2 movies. Enemy of the State and The Prestige. Both of them were good, but not $15 worth of good. So if it were me, I'd save my money.

Now out of that Circuit City list, there's a lot of good movies. I'd recommend:

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Black Hawk Down
G.I. Jane
Casino Royale
Chicago
Glory Road
Rocky Balboa

Well, I was all hopeful and just dialed into my local CircuitCity flier (online) and it has a smaller selection than the local BestBuy flier. Ergo, the actual list is clearly store dependent. I also looked to see if there is an online BOGO, and there isn't. So if I want "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" (which I do), looks like I'll have to purchase online through the JR.com BOGO :(.

I wouldn't care what Circuit City offered. That is a dishonest company. They lost my business in 1997 with their Digital Video Express LLC venture and the lies to customers that accompanied it, and they have never regained it.

The ad does NOT feature the B1G1 offer, but according to a few employees online the stores were all sent directions today with the list of titles to offer starting tomorrow... an attempt to one-up Best Buy's offer, I'm dure. Assuming it's true, this is actually better, as Best Buy will no doubt sell out of all the decent titles very quickly as they're in the ad, while Circuit City won't have the deal advertised.

I wholeheartedly concur. And laying off "overpaid" salespeople earlier this year only further cemented my opinion of CC. I haven't actually been into one of their stores since those layoffs, but I'm cheap, and I will make an exception for this sale.

Jeez, guys. I didn't think calling these movies bad would be so controversial. I mean THE GUARDIAN's on that list. It's not like we're talking about the Criterion Collection here. If I thought this was gonna offend people, I would've kept my mouth shut.

Unfortunately a lot of people on these boards have the same need. Why? I have no clue.

Isn't that what these boards are about? There are a lot of people on here who have first-hand experience with A/V equipment, and I come here to see what they have to say about those things. First-hand user critiques are invaluable.

I happen to see a lot of movies, and I like to give back to this community by sharing my opinions on them. I had to sit through Eight Below. I got paid to see it, and I still felt ripped off. If I can help to spare some poor unsuspecting soul from that horrific experience, I'm gonna.

"G.I. Jane" better than "Enemy Of The State"? People, do your own research, don't limit yourself to these recommendations!

I totally agree with that last sentence. Honestly, both of those are good, but neither is worth a blind buy. And you're right, I probably shouldn't recommend one and not the other.

But here's my question, and something which I think would be helpful to people out there. What do you guys recommend?

Whether you like a movie or not is subjective. The movie I like, you may not, and vice-versa.

To try and convince people that these are bad movies and they should not buy smacks of a hidden agenda, i.e. HD-DVD, or just plain stupidity.

What's your point?

Cicuit City sale CONFIRMED.... This morning, I just purchased:

Both Pirates movies, Enemy of the State, and Apocalypto. They rung up at $15.00 each. GREAT deal. The only issue is that there is no mention of this in the store and the movies are mixed in with others that are not on sale so you'll have to sift through some titles...but still.... a brick and mortar store with $15 dollar BD titles? A freegin miracle that HAS to be taken advantage of, IMO.

The Circuit City in Nashua NH had one sign up, listing the titles. But it was obviously not a sale well thought out in advance, and they hadn't stocked up on any of the titles, and didn't have a lot of them in their small selection.

In contrast the Best Buy next door had multiple copies of all the BOGO titles, and extra ones listed as $14.99.

Whether you like a movie or not is subjective. The movie I like, you may not, and vice-versa.

You're right that artisitic quality is subjective, hence, my last post.

To try and convince people that these are bad movies and they should not buy smacks of a hidden agenda, i.e. HD-DVD, or just plain stupidity.

The thing that I love most about being format neutral is how people from both sides of the war attack me with their absolutely ridiculous (yet wildly entertaining) conspiracy theories. If anything, I prefer Blu-ray because it looks better on my system. In fact, I'm gonna try to go to Circuit City myself on Tuesday and get ROCKY BALBOA and CHICAGO. So I guess we'll have to chalk this one up to stupidity. Wouldn't be the first time.

What's your point?

There's some other thread which started a few days ago by some guy who blindly bought Steven Soderbergh's BUBBLE. In the thread, he called it the worst movie he bought on Blu-ray thus far. Reading his post, it became clear that if he had even the slightest idea of what the movie was like to begin with, he would have known that he would not have liked it. He could have saved $30. So he started a thread to warn others. That was a nice thing for him to do.

But on the flip side, I liked BUBBLE a lot. So did a bunch of other people, apparently, and we all stated as much in that thread. That, to me, is great. Because now on these forums exists two conflicting viewpoints of that movie, both of which are fairly articulate, and future consumers can make a more educated decision as to whether or not to buy that movie.

So here's a situation where there are a whole bunch of people seeing a great deal, and wanting to take full advantage of it. A lot of people are willing to roll the dice and see what comes up. So when I see people getting excited about the new low price of DEJA VU, my first reaction is to tell them that it's just not worth it. Because no one else seems to be doing that.

I suppose, just like with BUBBLE, I should go into why these movies are good or bad, and if people want me to, I will. But that's not the vibe I'm getting. I think it would also be beneficial to hear why (or if) other people think these movies are good. Because most of them have been hammered by both critics and moviegoers alike. At the very least, I'd love to see what people here think of these movies after they purchase them.

So my point is to educate the consumer. Because, having seen these movies, I'm in a position where I can do that. And if I have a hidden agenda, I suppose it would be to send a message to the studios that we will not put up with the craptastic movies they release, no matter how cheap they are. Disney should bring on the good movies. Where's FROM DUSK TILL DAWN? I would totally buy that for $15.

I went to the San Mateo, Ca. Circuit City this morning (Sunday 10/14) and they had no knowledge of any BD sale. Every time I walk into this store I understand why CC is in such trouble. They have no clue how to run a business. And it starts with the management of this store. They run it more like a social club for employees than business dedicated to the customer. I called back this afternoon to check about the sale and after wading through the menu nobody even answers the phone.

I went to my CC on tuesday looking for Robocop. They didn't have it. Then I asked for 28WL. They didn't have it.

Then I asked if they had any of this weeks new BD releases.
Nothing. They never have any of the movies on release date, it takes them a week to get it, then a week to put it on the shelf.

And they cant check the computer, they walk around looking through shelves.
Not buying from them anymore.

Amazon's deal is better, but Circuit City is offering some movies Amazon isn't. For example, Silent Hill, Tears of the Sun, Ultraviolet and Black Hawk Down aren't part of the Amazon BOGO deal but you can get them at CC.

I'd recommend picking up the titles you want that aren't part of the Amazon promotion at CC, and getting the rest from Amazon.

Sale was not in the weekly ad but in my local store a really small sign was posted in the Bd section with the list of movies. For you I'd suggest you just go ahead and buy them. The BDs involved in the promotion should just ring up as being $15 each when scanned, mine did.

Well, I've sworn of CC for the exact same reasons. If you don't want to give them your business, take the CC ad to Best Buy and have them match it. That's what I'd be doing, except all the titles on the list I actually want I already have.

Good news; just got back from Circuit City and they have ALL blu-ray titles under 29.99 for BOGO. However, YMMV. In the California Bay Area, all CC stores offer this except the ones in Blossom Hill, San Jose and Santa Cruz. This does not work with titles more than 29.99. They scanned AVP and X3, both of which are 34.99 and the savings didn't come up. You might have to twist their arm because technically the savings are not listed in their ad. However, it is in their computer system. They supposedly don't have to honor this if it's not in the ad. The cashier guy was nice enough to do it for me.

I think as long as you grab one off the list then it rings the others one's up at 1/2 off..

I got some of the Sony/Disnet titles already, I guess I'll head back shortly and see if I can get some Fox and WB titles.

As I stated in my post it might be a glitch and If I had a scanner I would prove it but I am at work. Why would I make this up ?????????

Worth a shot to check

Just trying to help others out. That was all..

Like I said I had her scan EVERY BR in stock which was alot. Wasnt busy thank god and they all rang up that way.

Chris

Exactly why I said I was not calling you a liar and that I wanted another confirmation that it wasn't your store. Don't get worked up, I'm thanking you for the post - just wanted to save time going to the store if it was a one-off situation.

By the way, just bought about 40 titles. THANKS again for the post!! :)

I called the CC in Fairfax, VA and they had no clue what I was talking about. They told me there was no such sale. Of course I don't believe anything they say.

I can hardly believe it myself. I have to answer to Mr. Visa at the end of the month, but this is WAY TOO good to pass up for someone trying to build a collection (I only had about 40 total before this freak sale).

I can confirm that mix-and-match does in fact work. Pretty sure you don't even need them to be "of equal or lesser value", just buy in pairs!!

If by "qualified" you mean under $30, then yes. If you mean under the terms of the Disney/Buena Vista "original deal", then no.

As mentioned earlier in the other CC BOGO thread, I had called the local CC and they did not confirm this BOGO (I expected it, as they are useless!).

I took a trip at lunch time and picked up:

1- The Devils Reject: $12.50 (MSRP $29.99)
2- Day After Tomorrow: $15 (MSRP $29.99)
3- Enemy of the State: $15 (MSRP $29.99)
4- Fantastic Four RoSS: $15 (MSRP $29.99)

I tried Kingdom of Heaven and Hoosiers ($34.99) and they did not work. The checkout guy told me that the promo does not appear to apply to movies over $30.

Then I went back, to pick up Surf's Up ($29.99), Bullitt ($24.99) at a different register, and it did not do it!!!

I told the cashier that I had been there 10 minutes ago and I even had the receipt on me. I went and grabbed two of the titles which I had bought earlier, and again it didn't do it !!!.

Since I am looking for the Fly, I may visit another not too far from my house, later on tonight, to check it out. But I succeeded the first time and failed the second time, after 15 minutes at the same CC!!!.

Just came back from trip number 2 and I got a steal, picked up Bourne Identity and Out of Sight HD DVD and FFRoSS, Open Season, Letters of Iwo Jima and 300 for $62.xx out the door. The disks rang up at half off then the system subracted 2 of the BD discs as the but 1 get 1 promotion package. Very odd but $62 for 6 HiDef discs, I aint complaining.

Absolutely confirmed working on all titles less than $30 from ALL studios and both blu-ray and HD DVD formats!!!

Interesting side note, both trips different check out clerks but both of them were promoting Transformers HD DVD pretty hard to me and telling me to come back tomorrow to pickup a copy and they seemed pretty genuinely excited about the release.

Here are my 18 titles to show that the BOGO deal is real:

Devil's reject, a few good men, basic instinct, phonebooth, hitch hiker's guide, transporter 2, planet of the apes, evil dead II, stir of echos, 28 days late, entrapment, jay and silent bob, American psycho, young guns, saw 1 2 and 3, strange than fiction.
