Although this doesnt change the fact that the original 360 still outputs analog, Id be curious if it hurts the PQ since it basically converts it to digital. Interesting to see the first round of reviews!
bkchurch 10-14-07, 09:33 PM That's cool but what's the point? Wouldn't it make more sense to send straight analog through component instead of analog converted to digital? It's not like your going to gain the ability to upconvert DVD's or play HD-DVDs in 1080p with this and the PQ is only going to be as good if not slightly worse than regular component or VGA so pretty much all the benefits of HDMI are lost.
Poolrad 10-14-07, 09:38 PM Some really old sets can't take anything more than 720p through component/VGA (I had an old Toshiba tubed set like this). So I'm sure there is some market out there for this, albeit small.

That's interesting since if I'm not mistaken most older tubes are 1080i native and few even had DVI (let alone HDMI) input, it seems odd they wouldn't accept 1080i (which actually requires less bandwidth than 720p) over component. I'm not doubting you, that just seems really weird.
Poolrad 10-14-07, 09:47 PM Winter 1999 Toshiba came out with Tubed (first gen) HD sets (I can't remember the model numbers anymore, I ended up giving it to my brother in law when we moved). I had the 36" and it weighed around 145lb's (was a monster). It was when Toshiba was pushing Progressive scan DVD players. Anyways long story short it was very limited with 1 progressive component input that only accepted 720p HD signal. It was an awesome picture for it's time, but it's long gone from my setup..

Interesting to see the first round of reviews!Whether an analog to digital converter (ADC) retains the full bandwidth of the signal depends on the quality of the ADC that is used. A good ADC will retain the full bandwidth of the signal while a poor quality ADC will lose some of that bandwidth. There are ways to test the quality of an ADC and in this case I think the simplest method would be to compare the quality of this converter and the HDMI output of one of the new Xbox 360 consoles on a 1:1 pixel mapped 1080p/720p display using a resolution test pattern. As mentioned though the market for this product is probably quite small since it doesn't allow for DVD upscaling.
nichrf36 10-14-07, 11:23 PM What may be a benefit is it looks like it may be able to carry the audio over the HDMI....limiting the amount of cables to my receiver.
Looks like its supposed to be out this week....havent seen anything on cost yet. Id imagine IGN will do a review on this.
jremy510 10-15-07, 09:44 AM I saw some blog posts about this dated more than a year ago. I was pretty sure it was vaporware.
whiskey > work 10-15-07, 10:33 AM would this look better than a VGA to a 720 projector anyways? I don't think it would, but anyone know?
Mike LS 10-15-07, 11:37 AM If it's not expensive, I'd get it just so I could move my 360 around the house easier. It's bad enough having to drag that damn power brick around, but the A/V cable is a pain. I'd love to be able to just leave an HDMI plugged into my set and leave the component cables on the projector. One less cable to move.
NYFOOTBALLGIANTS 10-15-07, 11:42 AM Hmmm I'd be interested because my set has a slight red push over component.
I'm wondering if it supports more then standard component resolutions. On my 720p set, when I used HDMI, the Xbox saw my screen as essentially 768p and gave me a much sharper picture then 720p component.
I can only see the benefit of this if you don't have any component jacks left, and need to use HDMI with your older 360.
bruce2003 10-15-07, 06:50 PM What is better, for picture purposes, to connect to a 1080p LCD, the VGA adaptor or HDMI (I have an Elite)? Thanks!
dezertrat 10-15-07, 07:50 PM Depends on the tv, some tv's have better vga adjustments than others. I tried VGA on my 720p Sony LCD and HDMI looked way better even after i changed the reference levels.
deathbymetal 10-15-07, 08:04 PM If the picture is as sharp as vga i would definately get this. My component port on my tv is crap and while vga delivers sharp pictures my tv doesn't have many calibration options for vga.
Davinleeds 10-15-07, 08:09 PM 1.3 hdmi is the deal breaker

Internally the Xbox 360 isn't capable of doing the advanced audio anyway, so how is 1.3 HDMI a deal breaker?
This continual whining is getting a little old...

Looking at his posting history, it is what he's all about.

If the 360 is capable of 5.1, wouldn't that mean it's capable of advanced audio, or am I misunderstanding?
Yes, there's still a lot for me to learn, which is one reason I'm at this forum. :)

No, the 360 is very limited in it's audio offerings. 5.1 Dolby digital and 5.1 DTS are old news now days. There's DD+, TrueHD, DTS MA, uncompressed not to mention 7.1 etc etc. That said these would only be needed for the HD-DVD add on, IMO. Some may say they want it in games, personally I don't think it's needed.

He must be getting bored of folding @ home.
