Reporting back about the HD adapter.

NO GO...

I updated the firmware to the june 18th firmwware on popcorns website and updated the APPS TOO.

There are no directions so here is what I did.

Plugged in the N dongle.

went to Networking..

changed it from Auro wired IP to Wireless Auto IP.

took 20 seconds to save.

went into wireless config.

It found the b/g band of my router (ssid: the N2)
It did not find the SSID of the N band (SSID: The N5)
Rescanned only found b/g again (the N2)

Manually entered into SSID (THE N5)
Picked WEP ASCII
Entered my WEP CODE (AAAAAF1111) - I know it's weak but easy to remember.
Saved the settings - It told me to Check my KEY
I changed it to WEP HEX
It saved and Hung my Popcorn (I wasted 3 minuters)

I tried again and Again - nothing but it ending up hanging the popcorn.

Will not Auto find the (N) band SSID of (THE N5)

I even turned off the b/g band and it found NOTHING.

IS there a tutorial? Did I do something wrong?

Whats the Button on the Dongle DO?

I don't know how anyone can help since you're about the only one who has one. I am using the Linksys WGA600N wireless bridge without issue if you want an alternative.

IM using the same exact thing without any issues - but I won one of these dongles and I figured I would try it. It don't work and I can;t figure it out so I'll stick with the WGGA600 myself for now.

Differences are that top row by default includes also automatic categories (from imdb) and TV Shows category. Details page contains link to start playback or links if tv show season selected.

This method does not require that "movie collector" commercial program that probably doesnt even run on my linux box (or maybe it does using wine...). Well I dont have time to enter all data to yet again another catalog program so this method is much better for me.

If you check in on the NetworkedMediaTank forums you'll see that there is alot of interest in graphical navigation and several applications being developed. I'm using the moviejukebox app to navigate my DVD's.

Try unsharing/resharing the folders. Check your cable, are you able to use other internet/network connected features?

If I do a regular samba share though the setup (network shares) I can browse my network and share folders no problem. But regular samba is too slow, using myihome, the pc showed up along with my internal harddrive and I was able to browse everything i told MYihome to make avalable. Now it's gone. I re-installed 4.9.1 (april 2008) which is the latest on the site. Reshared all the roots of my drives. It don;t want to show up. I don't get it?

Perhaps it's the newest firmware - I don't remember if the PC dissapeared after I installed the latest firmware, but it's not coming back at all.

Technically IM wired. . Im using a 802.11N router with a WGA600 N gaming adapter. Lets me wire from the gaming adapter to the popcorn, so the popcorn thinks it's connected direct to the same router/switch but technically it is wireless, but it worked before for weeks on end....

The Samba shares are ugly and look bad and they are a bit slower. I had no issues streaming a 1080p MKV, but with a regualr samba share there are slight studders.

Added some experimental support for generating index.htm files back into my TVIX GUI Builder. With the number of apps being developed, it may not be worth my effort to add full support for NMT players, but this is a start.

I'll be interested in seeing if the generated index.htm files work and gauging if there is enough interest to warrant further work in that direction.

I got my PC to show up again using MYiHome...

Had to turn the Firewall off on the router. (new router - Linksys N band)

JUst for good measure I did both OPEN UDP/TCP on port 8000

My understanding is that the beta firmware for the 6500 now supports high bitrate audio like TrueHD over HDMI. If this works, that would be a key advantage for the 6500 vs. the Popcorn Hour. Until, of course, the Popcorn Hour next generation adds HDMI 1.3 and supports these audio streams also (not a layup).

But only on external HD, not over Network? Try a file on a thumbdrive, see how that fares.

PCH A-110 will be out end of July and has HDMI 1.3. If this is true and all the other good things you hear about PCH A-110 how are we every going to get one. There must be a list some where were there taking names and Money.

Yes, I've even hardbooted to make sure. Almost all my mkv h264 files skip at some point of audio/video.

Get the Mediainfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en) program and post the results on one of them.

eac3to is your friend in this case. It will extract the audio from the specific stream into PCM. It will also pull the video. You can then mux the seperate video and audio tracks back into the container of your choice.

Yes the release prior to today's contains code for "failsafe" recovery of the PCH in case a firmware update corrupts the PCH. You will have to load that firmware and then the firmware released today for everything to work properly.

Hello all, I have been reading these forums for some time... I currently have a rapsody N35 media server and I am upgrading...it will be nice to have the Mkv as well as the flac support, I am considering the PCH, my question is this.... can you send files from the PCH to the external hard drive like you can on the TVIX , I was noticing the M-6500A has file management wich is a nice improvement.... also can you create genre folders for the audio like you can on the N35?, is there any way to have cover art for the PCH for the music files?, and can you send files to the PCH as nicely as you can on the N35..... thanks everyone....

The A-110 is definitely an evolutionary change vs revolutionary change, but in a good way. If you're going to use it in a home theater environment, the Dolby THD is certainly worth the extra $35, and the other niceties just make the price jump all the easier to swallow.

Personally, the B-110 does nothing for me, though I can certainly see where some folks are going to get excited about it. It just that, from my perspective, if I'm going to grab a motherboard and slap it in a case with some drives, I'm going to want it to have unlimited codec support, future upgradability, and a web browser. I'm thinking the new Atom-based PCs, for not a lot more $$ are going to be the way to go. Everything the B-110 does, plus Netflix instant streat, email, some game, whatever you want. Sure it will be a little more $$ both in upfront cost and electricity bills, but infinitely more flexible.

Your comments are appreciated as I will be doing a companion audio piece on my podcast this weekend.

1. Pictures looks very smooth, but there is a delay. The picture interface is lacking, for instance, the picture fades in, but just cuts to black on the way out. I'll try cutting the fade all together, that might help the delay as well.

Using an A-100 with the latest firmare...

HD MKV: Slow motion and frame by frame worked fine. I had one freeze that required a soft restart.

Xvid: Frame by frame was fine, slow motion playback didn't work. Some movies restarted after resuming regular playback.

Killer standard playback device, maybe not good for reviewing the Zapruder film.

I should have been more clear, my MKV file was H.264.

I'll try to check vob and wmv tonight.

With the new firmware, my A100 has been much more stable. Not perfect, but much better. I really like the ability to skip into files compared with TVIX. My TVIX crashes a lot when I try to go further into files.

The new firmware also fixes the aspect ratio problems that I have had with Terminator 2 WMV playback. That one surprised me...I was not expecting this fix.

Who knows maybe the links only work for United States IP addresses. We don't pay additional duties in the US, the US distributor handles it. In general, the US is a large market and pretty much nothing here sold at retail has import duties that the consumer would know about.

Sure. Just for the record, I'm pretty sure Chicago region should be considered as US IP address.

PCH can now play movies from your Netflix Watch Now queue using the Playon server software! No fancy coverart interface but the movie plays just fine. Have not tested the other services like Hulu that Playon supports but the menu certainly works.

Wow, this is great. i just tried it out, and it works amazingly well. Very simple to setup and it just works.

Quality wise, it look and sounded identical to my computer monitor, which is to say VHS quality for Netflix and Hulu looks like VHS heavily compressed (hulu reads 480 or 640x360 on info). Play, pause, stop works, but fast forward/chapter skip does not (restarts the clip), so not good for resuming a movie or clip, or skipping to the good part.

Navigation is just like other Popcorn Hours menus, text and folders, no images or flashy animations. You'll want to use your PC to order your netflix queue and find out if your episodes are available on Hulu.

Still, I'm super excited. This seems to be the future of TV to me. A small, quiet, capable box that pull down only what you want to see. If DVRs pose a threat to advertising revenue (everyone skipping commercials) than offer a better alternative, which this is. Watch what you want, when you want, with less commercials.

Let's see, free content that I would otherwise have to pay $40-100 a month for? Yeah, I am.

Using hardware the we already own (or should, at least), we get the functionality of the $100 roku box, and some of the functionality of a several hundred dollar HTPC. Sure, you could watch this content on your computer, but I prefer a comfy couch myself. Ask all the xbox360 owners how exceted they are to get the new netflix blade, and yet, it's not out yet. But this software give xbox owners, and well as PS3 and popcorn hour owners the functionality for free (well, $30 if you want to use it for more than 45 days), and begins to show what is possible with the best media streamer for the money out there today, the Popcorn Hour. What's not to get excited about?

For video material, I really like the Popcorn Hour. For audio and photos, the DVIX is better. Shouldn't be so...but it is. Over time, my DVICO boxes are becoming audio servers.

I can play HDDVR recordings with my PCH A-110.

Normally I don't look too hard at firmware release notes. The Casgle automatic downloading was a bit of a surprise. I did turn off the service in the menu (you can't just delete the files; the unit will just download them again).

There are some interesting streaming options added in to this release.

I just bought the new WD Media Player but after reading about the PCH I'm seriously considering returning the WD and buying one of these instead, just about $100 more and seems to a lot more.

Just one more thing - Is it simple to get it up and running? The WD was a breeze, just plug in the ext hd and it was doing its thing. I don't intend to network the PCH right now, I'll just use an ext hd, so is it a simple setup?

I thought it was a simple setup. Upgrade the firmware when you get it and it will format the drive and setup the NMT apps for you. In the maintenance menu their is also a setup wizard.

Thanks for the link, Kemac. Lots of good info there. I've also watched several videos on Youtube about it. This thing is very very cool (but then I'm sure ya'll already know that). I like that I can install a hd in it, slave it to my computer through USB. (I'd rather not mess w/networking right now, maybe in the future.) And it seems like it will play just about everything, including some of the 1080 files that the WD media player is having trouble with. Also seems to have good support and a lot of FW updates.

I'm placing my order tomorrow and will return the WD player to Best Buy. Hopefully should get my PCH next month.

Two category of questions here The first are about advanced audio in the 110. How well does the 110 work with receivers that can take uncompressed audio via hdmi 1.3? Do all formats work, or are there some formats that are left out? Can you just take blu ray files from the PC and move them to the 110 and have it all work? By the way, is the networking speed improved over the 100?

Second, what is next from the Popcorn Hour folks? I have a 100, am thinking about the 110, but also might want to wait until the next machine hits. Any thoughts on features, timing, and price? I thought I read somewhere that the new machine might have a speedier video processing chip and better networking I/O.

HDMI has been updated to the 1.3a spec, allowing full support of HD Audio pass-through for DTS HD-HR, DTS HD-MA, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD. The thing I like about the 110 vs the 100 is that you can slave the PCH hd to your computer so it will recognize it as an ext hd. Since I don't plan to use a network, that will greatly simplify copying files to the PCH.

With regard to slaving the 110...doesn't this unit have ext3 as the file format? How can I slave it to my PC without adding some additional drivers?

You can play files without installing a hard drive into the popcorn hour via a USB key or other external harddrive, or over wired/wireless (with dongle) networked PC or NAS. If you would like to instal a hard drive in the popcorn hour and install files there, you can:

-FTP the files over a network
-Mount the PH as a networked drive and move using your OS file manager
-Move file from a connect USB device using a series of key presses
-Mount the Popcorn Hour to your PC as a USB hard drive (A-110 only)
-Download Via **********

The PCH definitely does not currently support 480i via HDMI. When I tried to explain in the PCH forum why this would be a worthy addition, a forum moderator went to great lengths to "explain" to me why that isn't necessary since he claimed DVDs are all 480p, which of course is obviously WRONG. Given the level of misunderstanding/denial, it probably won't ever be added. I wonder if it is a hw constraint.

Indeed in Feb 2005 a Sigma representative reported the following, with regard to their EM862x range: - The EM8620L chip-set cannot generate the proper output format/timing to support 480i or 576i over HDMI.
Maybe Zensonic can find a HDMI transmitter chip that will accept standard 480i/576i format/timing from the DVD decoder.

Music lovers would also like to see it get multichannel WMA lossless (MusicGiants) and even Apple lossless so it could play existing high quality purchased music downloads.

My current popcorn hour is hooked up to a HDMI receiver and a HDMI monitor on the basement system...so all is goodness.

Upstairs, the main floor receiver has HDMI, but the sony tube xbr monitor is component only.

If I fed a PCM audio signal over HDMI to the receiver; would it convert the video to component? The receiver is a Denon 3806, and has hdmi in but very little audio processing other than pcm on the hdmi.

If Popcorn Hour came up with something like that, and the Denon would support it, a new unit would be very interesting. Right now I have a Dvico 5000 with toslink spdif and component output hooked up to this particular system.

The files have to have *.wav (not *.dts) extension. Make sure your receiver can decode DTS audio, that PCH is connected to the receiver via a digital (coax or optical) cable, and that you set the PCH Audio Setup options the following way: "Surround=5.1", "DTS=RAW". If you still hear noise, then your PCH "digital volume" (set via the remote) is probably not at its default value - try changing it as the DTS file is playing; once you hit the default level, you should hear the music playing.

I have no problem playing iso's. It's all about bandwidth and QoS (quality of service). Your best bet is wired gigabit with cat6. Second would be wireless-N 5GHz (not 2.4). I use Netgear wireless-N 5GHz products and can stream HD reliably.

Powerline networking is very situational. Depending on how your house is wired, and what outlets you use you can get vastly different performance. There are also devices that seem to introduce noise that affect performance too. In the end it all depends on your house.

First of all Gimp was right on for two counts. Changing volume from minus 2 to zero caused the DTS to work smoothly.

And using the play button rather than double clicking the title does cause a full playlight to run.

With regard to powerline, I now see that it is very situational. I put the server on the same switch as the popcorn hour, and hi def worked perfectly. With powerline....not so good.

I updated the firmware on my Linksys powerline network. Two of the three units updated just fine. The third bricked. It can't be fixed. And even though I used bonafide linksys software (nothing open sourced), because the unit is out of warranty Linksys said "sorry Charlie". Grumble grumble. Did buy a replacement unit off ebay; with any luck it'll be under warranty (seller said it was but hey we are talking about ebay here!).
