I recently purchased a 42pz700u and was watching sd dvd’s on it with an older dvd player. PQ was, of course, sub par, so i purchased an oppo 981hd to make the best of my large sd dvd library. It was better, but it still doesn’t look great. I was watching a copy of 28 days later last night, and I felt like I was watching a vhs copy of it.

Would the gefen scaler for $400 help out? Or maybe one of those onkyo recievers with the Reon chip in it? Maybe a blue-ray or hd-dvd player with a reon chip in it would be good too…but it would also be nice to have something that converts component to hdmi.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make my SD experience a little bit better on this tv? Am I going the wrong route for trying to make this picture better?

HDTV does look fantastic though!

Are you upscaling? Try 480p over HDMI with the Oppo and let the TV do the scaling. I'm not familiar with this particular display but the Pannys usually have good scalers. Upscaling to my Panny plasma actually degrades the picture IMO.

I have my oppo 981hd set to upscale the image to 1080p over hdmi.
