Discovery Channel Goes All-American with 'Sunrise Earth' Blu-ray, HD DVD

Following its high-def release of the US edition of 'Planet Earth,' the Discovery Channel is back with American-themed Blu-ray and HD DVD box set editions of its popular series 'Sunrise Earth' this December.
As we've previously repoorted, back in April, the BBC released next-gen versions of its phenomenally successful documentary series 'Planet Earth,' which went on to shatter high-def sales records for a box set release. The Discovery Channel later began selling its own re-edited and re-scored version of the show, releasing new next-gen editions exclusively via its online store this past July to further strong sales.

Apparently hoping lightning will strike twice, Discovery Channel is now taking a similar approach with its next high-def release. 'Sunrise Earth: American Sunrise' compiles thirteen US-specific episodes from the popular series, which features breathtaking footage of sunrises across the world, all captured completely in high-definition.
As with 'Planet Earth,' The Discovery Channel's distribution rights to 'Sunrise Earth' appear to be limited to direct sales. As such, the channel recently listed three separate box set editions of the series at Discovery Channel Store. The standard DVD version ($49.95), and both next-gen editions ($59.95 for the Blu-ray and the HD DVD) all show an announced release date of December 4, 2007.

Watching grass grow is quite entertaining ... compared to action flicks ...

Call me crazy, but it sounds good.

I really like Planet Earth, and I watched 1 1/2 episodes of Galapagos yesterday.

Is it true this was only filmed in 1080i?

This is a tad different.

Compass Light, a small production company in Camden, Maine, started producing the series in 2004. Over 59 one-hour Sunrise Earth shows have been created in the first four years of production. The crew shoots with High Definition video cameras and the editors cut between multiple perspectives at a leisurely pace. The show is presented in real-time, with each shot lasting an average of 30 seconds. Each episode captures one morning from one location. The effect is to simulate what you would generally see and hear if you were at the shooting location. Captions in the lower third of the screen occasionally give information as to the location and events being viewed.

I love Sunrise Earth. I used to sit on my couch in the morning with the windows open and eat my oatmeal and drink my tea. It was almost like being there. :-)

Sunrise Earth has some awesome photography, but I lost attention after about 15 or 20 minutes. Maybe I could watch the entire show at 4:20PM.;)

Is it true this was only filmed in 1080i?

This series was made for broadcast TV and when shooting reality content for broadcast you generally use one of the two broadcast standards: 720P or 1080i. That's it. No 1080P. Only for movies and dramatic work and then not at 60fps because that would make it incompatible with broadcast standards.

I believe Discovery HD sources content in 1080i exclusively by the way.

Re: Sunrise Earth... I recently bought a copy off E-bay. I'm not that impressed with the PQ.

Moreover, I wanted to ask of any fellow AVS'ers that own this title, did yours come shrink wrapped? My seller advertised this as brand new, but there was no wrap on my. I need to verify before I leave negative feedback.

Thanks in advance.
