I noticed that the "300" HD-DVD also runs on typical SD-DVD players. I'm trying to convince my wife that we need an HD-DVD player (especially for Transformers :) ) but she says she doesn't want to buy HD-DVD's if they won't play on SD-DVD players.

Do typical HD-DVD's play on traditional DVD players? My gut says no but my hopes want a yes.

they won't, only combo discs will. nto sure if transformers is a combo, judging by the $27.95 price on amazon i'm guessing it is.

just from the dvd/hd dvd ad i've seen of the movie, the difference between sd and hd is huge.

It's not a combo. It's a 2-disc special edition.

What % of HD-DVD's are dual format? Any idea?

Not sure, but I believe that they will eventually be getting rid of them. Just tell your wife that all of your SD DVD's will play in the HD-DVD player upscaled, and that you're the bread winner so she should STFU. (maybe not that last part)

My tough as nails redhead wife of 4 months would kick my butt and point out that she makes about as much as I do and (honestly) probably does double the work :P

On top of that the "format war" issue exists, but mainly it's because we'll take movies with us when we go visit her family for Thanksgiving or we'll watch a movie at a friend's house (NONE of our friends havd BD or HD-DVD).

No one is phasing them out.

Warner and Universal will be using them for new releases for the foreseeable future. If warner was phasing them out then God and Generals wouldn't have been released as a combo (though there is no movie on the DVD side just extras). Both enjoy the Flexibility this allows. Universal has done one version of the movie on one side and an alternate cut on the other twice. Warner has used the other side for extras exclusively twice.

Warner is just getting into the business of releasing lower priced non-combos for movies that have been out past the new release window where the MSRP might prevent people who haven't already bought it from purchasing it.

Why not just get the $299 HD-A20 at Best Buy, get two free off the shelf(at Best Buy), five free in the mail and use it as your SD DVD player. I think, with all those free HD DVDs it comes with, you could talk your wife in to it. :)

Still qualifies for the 5 free movies too.

Well you could just buy combos. Just buy a few HD-DVDs only. If truly needed buy the SD version as well. You could always wait a few weeks and get the DVD used from the local rental place for half price.
