View Full Version : hd dvd on ps3...possible.?!?!
ditch-digger 10-15-07, 05:59 PM ok follow me here.
fact. you can hook up your 360 hd drive to your pc (with vista) power dvd, and blam hd-dvd
fact. trust me..you can download hd-dvd's for "back up" purposes to your hard drive. yes they are 24-30g each but a couple of 500g hard drives are good for now.
fact. you can play hd movies from hd-dvd's right from your pc with a click of a button. makes an excellent media center..30 hd-dvs at the click of a button.
fact. you can network your 360 console with your pc, and watch hd-dvs on your tv. from your pc (if your not a big fan of the whole htpc look)
question....has anyone downloaded hd-dvs to there hard drive (laptop size) and placed it into the ps3 to wathc hd-dvd's....hmmmmmmmm??????
cambrian 10-15-07, 06:01 PM but you would need a DVD player software on the PS3 to play hd-dvd titles. So then the next logical questions is this: why the hell would Sony support such a thing?
sharkcohen 10-15-07, 06:04 PM Hrmmm, might be possible with Linux on the PS3....
from a computer standpoint, why not?
Run a derivative of linux on it and have a way to access the raid'd drives you are done.

I think he's talking about just the feature (not the extras.) The PS3 decodes all of the formats that the feature can be encoded in on HD-DVD to my knowledge. In theory is seems like there would be a way.
ditch-digger 10-15-07, 06:08 PM i cant at this time....waiting for the hard drive..
but will give it a try....linux sounds possible...
ditch-digger 10-15-07, 06:09 PM was just an interesting conversation i got into at work..

yeah i know, a geek who cant punctuate..:o:o
I talked to my roommate about it a couple of months ago and he said it wasn't possible at the time because the PS3 locks the video card when it boots to Linux, and no build of Linux has been able to get around this. Maybe this has changed recently.
Here's a recent article about a guy who uses the PS3 with the HD-DVD drive in Linux to rip DVDs to H.264.

drag0nreb0rn 10-16-07, 06:01 PM why bother? playback over your ethernet connection from a PC to the PS3 or xbox regardless of format is pretty stunted. Yeah it works but not well. A network hiccup will stop playback and you have to start it over from the beginning and fast forward/rewind is awkward. I think finding a way to play the HD-DVD through PS3 running linux and using the USB 360 drive has some merit but after all that effort you might as well spend $200 on a A3.
danieledmunds 10-16-07, 06:52 PM I imagine you could re encode the movie into an mp4 file that the PS3 would play back. Of course it would take a long time and then you would have to share it in media player 11 and copy it to the hard drive. You could try putting it on an external hard drive but I think the PS3 only sees FAT32 partitions so you would have to split the file up into 2Gb chunks.
If you put together the amount of time you would spend doing this, and then cost this as if it was your job, you would probably find a lot less of your life would be wasted by simply buying an HD DVD player.
dragonyeuw 10-16-07, 07:11 PM Don't know if this has ever been asked, but what happens if you try to play the SD side of a HDDVD/ SDDVD combo on your PS3,will it play?

what......???
stunted, not in the least. what are you running.???
bdizzle 10-16-07, 07:45 PM the main problem is sony hasn't opened up the ps3 hardware to enough to have smooth enough playback. until that happens, even if it does work, it wouldnt be optimal
