View Full Version : Death Proof - January 7 (in Germany)
Source: http://areahd.dvdtiefpreise.com/?p=109
Death Proof will be out in Germany on January 7.
There are two known extras which come along with the release for the time being.
Since Weinstein didn't announce any release for this movie in the US, this will be the first release of the movie on HD DVD.
German distributor is "Senator Home Entertainment" which also distributes "Planet Terror" at any time after that release (reason: in Germany both movies weren't shown concurrently in theaters).
Hmm. I was thinking of buying this and Planet Terror on SD DVD, but I may hold off now.
I knew these were in the works for international HD-DVD, so I held off. I'm glad I did! Thanks OP.
Good thing that Senator is going dual format. In the beginning they were Blu only!

This is so bought!
I am not waiting for the US release, whenever they decide to release it, I am importing this baby. Thanks for the heads up.:)

I wouldn't. They spent so much time making those films look "bad" that I do not see a purpose for an HD release. The DD track on the DVD is the best I have heard in years.
I saw Death Proof this weekend on SD and it looked just fine. The HD version should be even better.

But in regard to the sharpness the HD version could really gain over the SD.
The director's just tried to make it look "bad" in terms of grain.

Well I may just get the SD releases then :D

Oh jeez, this argument is so off base. Like the HD release isn't still going to look infinitely better due to the increased detail.
saginawjuggalo 10-16-07, 11:51 AM I want Death Proof & Planet Terror on HD DVD... Do I see Saw III? Nice.. I want Underworld & T2 as well.. Too bad imports cost 4x the cost of a Blu-Ray (BOGO free sale)... That really adds up over time. I would be better off buying a PS3 and waiting for the Blu-Ray BOGO sales :(

Well that was far heavier in Planet Terror than Death Proof. I also recall reading/hearing (forget wear) that they were going pull back a little on the "stomping" for home releases. Either way, yes even being heavily "stomped upon" these releases will still look much better in HD.
Foxarwing42 10-16-07, 01:31 PM I'm just getting them both in the Steelbook's at Best Buy. They look nice in those. Although I might import Crank and the Saw movies. I'll probably get Terminator 2 from Germany.
I picked up Planet Terror today for pretty cheap. I will still buy the HD when it comes.
curtishd 10-16-07, 05:32 PM Got both on DVD but might buy an HD DVD player for both in HD. Any spec on audio? Also who own Kill Bill TWBA overseas, might we see a HD release?
FredsterB 10-16-07, 06:03 PM How was this movie? Any good? If it's worth it, i'll definitely get it. Wasn't this the Tarantino's movie?
curtishd 10-21-07, 12:51 PM Any word on Plant Terror?

No, this one was directed by Robert Rodriguez. Tarantino did "Death Proof". :)
Death Proof > Planet Terror IMO
dildatonr 10-21-07, 03:31 PM I found Planet Terror to amazingly awesome while I found Death Proof very meh.
But I'll buy both in HD.
It seems your opinion is the more popular one. That is why when I finally did watch Planet Terror I was shocked at how stupid it was.
I don't think this thing is worth an HD purchase. I've watched both Planet Terror and Death Proof in SD. Upscaled is decent, but the whole movie has grain, "scratched film". screwed up colors, etc. throughout it. If you want to watch HD scratched film than spend the money. Otherwise save it for something more worthy.
Emannikcufesin 10-21-07, 09:06 PM This is great news. I was just eye-balling Death Proof and Planet Terror on SDVD. I'm going to wait now.

Nothing is more worthy than buying the movies you want on HD DVD. Personally I loved the stylistic sloppy/vintage look of the movie. The lazy edits, the color banding, the heavy grain on certain scenes, everything about it gave the movie just a great visual quality.
TheRescue 10-21-07, 10:19 PM The second half of Death Proof was virtually grain free. The steelbook disc looks ridiculous up converted. I can only imagine how good the HD DVD would look.
fiddlesticks 10-22-07, 03:11 AM Would probably buy Death Proof in HD but skip on Planet Terror - OK once, but don't feel the need to see it again.
And I agree the Death Proof DVD looked and sounded amazing, but I just kept thinking how great it would look on HD DVD.

I think hi-def versions of these films would be the best way to convincingly recreate the intentional film flaws. I want the full effect of being fooled that the actual print is melting away. I would prefer that those effects don't look digitized or blocky at all. Seeing the film in the theater was the best way to get that sensation, but it's still worth holding up the illusion on the home theater.
That said, if Planet Terror and Death Proof are produced on hi-def discs, they won't be the glossy, photo-realistic, reference-quality films that many folks look for to tout their HD setup.
I picked up both Steelbooks so ill probably hold off until there is a dual release instead of single releases
rbunnell 10-22-07, 01:59 PM I love both movies and own both on sd. Will gladly buy again on hd dvd.
hlindstr 11-14-07, 07:48 AM FS-Film in Finland has only just listed Death Proof and Planet Terror HD DVD titles to their site. These will be released in 2008.
FS-Film (http://www.fs-film.fi/showPage.php?page_id=1140)
Other HD DVD titles listed are:
Eastern Promises (HD DVD)
3:10 To Yuma (HD DVD)
Ganes (HD DVD) Probably the first Finnish movie on HD media.
Blu-ray titles listed in the site are FOX/MGM titles which are distributed by FS-Film in Finland.
Good news, this HD DVD will also have English DTS-HD 5.1. Great news for importers, besides the steelbook packaging.

lemonhead99 11-14-07, 01:06 PM DTS-HD?? Awesome, I really want to check this out.
Count Westwest 12-13-07, 02:57 PM Here is the Amazon link for those that want to order:

FredsterB 12-13-07, 04:26 PM I'm going to go for the Finnish version, that one will for sure have English subtitles. I really don't understand why most of the German versions have English audio but not subtitles?
guyutemsg 12-13-07, 04:33 PM Confirmed with Tony at Xploited he will be carrying this one :D
timfitz99 12-13-07, 04:46 PM I am also torn on whether or not to get these in HD, but watched both SD versions upconverted on my A35 and thought they looked great, when you count the intentional grain/scratches. The only thing keeping my from buying SD is the inevitable upgrade discs, with all the trailers they showed at the theater.
Hopefully the HD version has those.

Russ Younger 12-13-07, 05:36 PM Does anyone know if this will include the trailers and fake ads? Those would make the grindhouse experience complete.
Besides, who didn't like Thanksgiving?
odysseyroc 12-14-07, 12:47 AM Now I'm glad that I held off on buying both on dvd. I really want Planet Terror the most of the two though.
eapleitez 12-14-07, 01:27 AM I'm just getting them both in the Steelbook's at Best Buy. They look nice in those. Although I might import Crank and the Saw movies. I'll probably get Terminator 2 from Germany.
HD >>>>>>>> Steelbook packaging.
no brainer.
paul nyc 12-14-07, 06:46 PM Death Proof and Planet Terror will not be released on HD-DVD and BLU-RAY in Germany on 01/07/08. This will be reflected on the German retail sites soon.
