And lets see how well SJ's web app roadmap for the iPhone plays out now that its role as diversionary tactic has been revealed. Actually, that's not really fair, as web apps do have a grand place on the iPhone. Just not as a replacement strategy for a true SDK. Now all the iPhone needs is 3G, and a conduit to get some of those Orange unlocked beauties (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/10/17/orange-to-sell-unlocked-iphones-in-france) into the states, and i'll be happy. See, while everyone gushes over iPhones going to Europe, they still have yet to come to the third world here in Montana. You have to wonder if an SDK was promised from day one to be delivered early 2008 if we would have seen ANY serious web apps for the phone. Remote Buddy and EyeTV's wifi access come to mind. Would devs have just sat back and waited for the real SDK? kenliles 10-17-07, 06:28 PM great point Jerry - I'm sure they're not too happy about it; On the other hand, they probably still have a leg up for the re-write... ken wildrock 10-17-07, 07:46 PM You have to wonder if an SDK was promised from day one to be delivered early 2008 if we would have seen ANY serious web apps for the phone. Writing web apps is a great thing. And it will become only more important over time as coders get more adept at it, and the technology matures. Its just that developers understand the difference between the two, and don't mistake one for the other. That's why most developers were so pissed when Apple said no to the SDK, and yes to web apps. It insulted their intelligence. NOw we will have the best of both worlds. Apple allowing web apps on the iPhone was a great advancement in mobile technology. It was just limited in what it could accomplish. Not that those accomplishments aren't great things, like Remote Buddy and the EyeTV wifi. |
