View Full Version : Slightly OT: how to convert a PCM signal to Bitstream?

Perhaps not the correct forum, but I didn't where to ask it. Knowing there are some audio experts here, I've thought I might get an answer.

Is there any simple outboard type of converter that can convert digital PCM signals to Bitstream. I don't even know if this can be done and if so, if it can be done in a simple way.

I need such a converter box to feed the D-Box controller with bitstream signals. When I get the MPCM upgrade for my Halcro the player will be set to output PCM signals thru HDMI and I don't know how to get the Bitstream signals from the sources. So I was thinking to use the digital output on the back of the Halcro. But halcro says when it's fed with PCM it will also output PCM from its digital output. So I need some type of a converter.

I'd appreciate if you could help me out with this.

You would need a Dolby Digital encoder to do that. That may not work though. If the controller was built looking for the bitstream that is on the disc a decoded signal that was then later re-encoded to Dolby Digital would not be the same as what was on the disc due to the lossy nature of Dolby Digital and that you are starting with a different soundtrack in the first place.

One option is to get it from the source if that is HD-DVD or Blu-ray. The HDMI feeds Halcro and the SPDIF puts out the bit stream (eg DTS for HD-DVD) to your D-box.

This is good news. Do you think if I choose HDMI Audio option on the Panny BR player, will I still get signals from standart digital outputs.

Well, I have to try this when I get my Halcro back next week. I hope it'll work.

Thanks
