View Full Version : ReadyNAS NV+ on sale at Fry's
FYI.
Our local (San Diego) Fry's Electronics stores are advertising the 1TB NV+ (2x500GB) for $899 today. Lowest price I've seen since the netgear buyout.

Phantom Gremlin 10-19-07, 01:44 PM We've got a Fry's in Oregon, but a lot of the good stuff never makes it up from California. I have never seen a ReadyNAS in our store (but I haven't looked lately).
same deal here in Houston
spyderx 10-20-07, 02:01 PM This is a good deal. I debated picking this up yesterday but tried something different.
I just picked up at Fry's the Promise SmartStor NS4300N (http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?product_id=177)
I debated on the ReadyNas, but the promise empty was $350, and I picked up 4 500gb SATA drives for 95 each at Frys yesterday. FWIW, Promise has been in storage for a long time, this is one of their first entries to the SMB space.
Anyway, took about 20 mins to set it up including format. Hooked up to my GBit network and am moving files now.
Some basic testing showed around 10MB/sec writes in raid 5, reads of the same files are around 25-30MB per sec. I'm fine with this, it's a media server for DVD and Lossless audio.
So for less than $800 out the door, a 2gb nas in raid 5, formatted to about 1.3TB actual capacity. Figured I'd give it a shot and if it sucked I'd just return it for the ReadyNAS. After a day of testing, I'm planning to keep it. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the ReadyNas, but it can act as a print server, has USB ports on back for external drives, etc. Biggest thing missing is the ReadyNAS RAID format for volume growth.
sanderant 10-20-07, 03:08 PM Interesting, is the firmware update for upnp released yet?

Yes, it does. My Roku Soundbridge sees it. Install the firmware, then install the uPnP plug-in. You then have the control panel options for it and a new share on the HD with folders for various media.
I probably won't use it, as I use iTunes and FireFly for streaming.
not to push anything ... just an FYI ..
Frys also has Kingston KVR333S0/1GR (1GB stick of notebook ram) to upgrade the NV+ with if you need it (on sale). I think the SKU was 4389075. The NV+ is PICKY about RAM. It comes with 256 stock.
My read speeds went up quite a bit.

Frys Oregon had the ReadyNAS last week before the ad ran. A firend may pick up one today if still in stock. $899 for 2x500GB isn't bad when compared to other stores.

I thought it was a 4x250 model they were selling...?...
Meenenator 10-23-07, 03:54 AM Just a quick Q.
I'm heading to the US next week (CA and IA) for some business meetings.
Are you guys saying that these prices quoted here are good prices?
I'm looking into upgrading my X6 to a NV+.
Do they have good prices on a non-populated one?
I must admit that I haven't done much research about the NV+ prices in the US for a while. So any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
M.
I think the Fry's ones are only good Fri-Tues. The multipage adverts come out on Friday in cities with a Fry's location. I don't know if it was a sale or a regular price?
mmihalik 10-24-07, 04:45 AM Sale is over; ended yesterday, Tuesday. My friend picked up 2.

I'm not convinced those prices are much to get worked up about. If you want to see how little you can spend for a bare or populated NAS unit, I suggest that you investigate at pricewatch_dot_com. Beware that the lowest prices will be from vendors you (and I) have never heard of -- small vendors who may not give the best service. But you'll see just how low you can go.
If you want to get the most bang for your buck while here, you should see the offerings at tigerdirect_dot_com, pcconnection_dot_com and cdw_dot_com. These will charge more than the lowest prices you'll see at pricewatch, but these are blue chip vendors who can be depended upon. Any of these would ship to a US hotel for you to pickup, I'm sure. I would expect their prices to be cheaper than the normal prices at a place like Fry's, but not noticeably cheaper than a sale at Fry's.
My $0.02. Good luck. Have a great time on your trip.

I will consider that.
Might be difficult to time correctly as we gonna move around a little.
I any case, I look forward to finally browse into one of those megastores and just enjoy. We don't have those massive sizes on hardwarestores here...

Well then you definitely want to hit Fry's while in CA. I'd suggest one of the newer stores, they're freaking huge.

graystrickland,
Good advice, as there are indeed many other vendors who carry this product.
However, a few things to also consider:
- some people like my friend won't do mail-order; strange, but true. In fact he will push local vendors to match prices
- buying locally supports the local businesses
- some of the local vendors, like Frys, have very friendly return privileges
Frys, doesn't always have the best price, but sometimes their sales on products newly introduced to the store are fantastic deals; especially if offered without rebates (I am sure I echo others when rebates are not part of the pricing).
If you have never been to one, it is surely an eye opening experience! Before the one opened in Oregon, I would stop in the Bay area stores whenever there for business. Note well: the frys-dot-com website prices are not always honored in the stores and vice-versa.
Pricegrabber-dot-com is a great resource, as is amazon-dot-com; useful info for comparative shopping, and user comments.
Just be careful with some of the vendors...
Mike
