View Full Version : Why do I need Blue Ray or HD DVD if I have Processor outputting 1080p
soyuppy 10-20-07, 03:42 AM If I understand correctly, these high end video processor ultimately output to 1080p...the video nirvana that one wants to achieve.
So with these processor, I should be able to feed in my sd source (SD DVD i/p, VHS, LD, etc) and watch nice HD (up to 1080p) quality picture on my 1080p display.
So do I still need HD DVD or Blue Ray? or there are still differeces between native 1080p Blue Ray output vs scaled 1080p output from these video processors?
cinema mad 10-20-07, 04:00 AM A true HD source(blu-ray/ HD is still superior to a scaled sd source, generally the more you scale somthing up the softer the image becomes especially when comparing to A true HD source.High End Video procesors are still far superior than the ones that come in the sd/hd players.

The display's VP can only do so much with the amount of information in any SD source. Same with the VP in the DVD player itself. It can look very nice, but HD it ain't.:)
Watch the same movie on both DVD and BR and see the difference yourself.
kartman 10-20-07, 07:00 AM I agree with this comment with one proviso... I think that a good quality SD-DVD source and look extremely good when run through a good VP to produce a 1080p output. For comparison, I've purchased some BD/HD-DVD copies of movies that I already own and DVD and have found mixed results.
I find a great DVD (scaled) to be equal to an average HD source but, if the DVD source is weak, the scaled results will be weak. Of course, I reference quality HD source blows away even great scaled DVD...

I guess I was trying to see if it's worth to plunge the $$ into a VP. For the price on these processor, I would have thought that it substitutes HD DVD or BR player.
robert lloyd 10-20-07, 12:28 PM I agree that true hd is bettter but the ever growing choice of good films on sd dvd to watch and only a small number of good flims on the hidef formats means that i am haveing to rely on my standard collection of 576i dvds. I have upscaled alot of my films to 1080p and have had great results for example star wars a new hope and six days and seven nights. I stil agree that they arent true hd but how long would i have to wait for these titles to come out. Dont forget that scaling is getting better and sd dvd mastering is also getting better
aaronwt 10-20-07, 06:15 PM Still the Sd DVDs have no detail to the picture when comparing them to HD. After watching HD for 6+ years, SD just blows. You become accustomed to HD and what used to look good with upconverted SD just doesn't cut it any more.

eric.exe 10-22-07, 12:31 AM Not mentioned is that the sound from HD discs is much, much, much, much, much, much, much better than the sources you listed (cept a good LD).

The Samsung BD-UP5000 hybrid player will play both HD formats and it's equipped with the Reon HQV processor for upscaling SD--assuming you can wait for it...

Peternels 10-25-07, 07:27 PM Hey guys. I am still trying to make sense of how to get my wall mounted LCD (1080p) and my Panny 200 (720p) to play to their best. I have some HDMI sources and some component sources. Is there a scaler that will have one output at 1080p and one output at 720p? I am trying to make my setup kid and wife proof (just so I don't get the "o its great and all, but it doesn't work" thing). I thought about taking my DVD and splitting the HDMI, one to LCD and one to projector. Then taking my component (Wii) and splitting and running one to LCD and one to projector. Is there a scaler that will take these different rez "ins" and then output upscaled at 2 different rez's, one for LCD and one for projector? Any help appreciated.
splinters 10-25-07, 07:45 PM multiple out's via HDMI isn't very common today, so I don't expect you will be able to find any "dual-output" scalar/VP easily. Your better off buying an HDMI splitter and split the original source to each panel. If you really need a VP, you can put a VP after each splitter, but how knows what happens with HDCP.

Why assume that all of us have substandard displays?
I do not currently own either a blu-ray pplayer nor a video processor. I was thinking of the DVDO VP30 as a processor ($1500) vs a pioneer elite blu-ray player (about $1000). Why buy the video processor if the blu-ray already upscales standard dvds? Does digital non-HD cable really look that much better run through a video processor?
