I currently have directv with an HD receiver in one room. I am planning to pick up another HD tv for another room, and was wondering what my options are for a receiver. Do I have to get it from Directv? If not, what models can I use? The current model I have is an HR-20. I would want something that has DVR capability as well. Just curious as to what options I have aside from spending another $300 to buy it from Directv. Thanks in advance

If you get it anywhere else it will Still cost you $300. You might get it from D* for $199 with free installation. I don't trust E-Bay for these leased receivers.

If you've been a good existing customer, call up, ask for customer retention, explain your situation and say you'd love to stay but you can get a leased DVR from your cable company with no up front costs, see if you can get them to budge on the HR20, lots of people have been able to.

I agree with Matt. It seems esp. important to speak with retention, which you can do by saying "cancel service" at the prompt. I strongly recommend reading a number of posts from the first thread below, and reading milominderbinder2's tips, available in a post on the second thread below. It helps to know what others are getting, in part because you will know what to ask for. For example, they will often charge $200-300 for the hr20 but then give it back in programming credits. As you will see from the threads it often takes several calls to get a satisfactory deal. Good luck!
