I am having a real hard time choosing between the Harmony 670 and the 880. My husband prefers the 670 for the button layout and he doesn't like the idea of rechargeable. I prefer the 880 because of the color screen and backlight sensor, and I do like the idea of rechargeable. Plus the buttons look smaller on the 670.

Our components are:
Philips 47" LCD TV
DirecTV HR20 DVR (used for HD TV, almost always pre-recorded)
DirecTivo HDVR2 DVR (Used for SD TV, music, and photos)
Pioneer Reciever (used for audio switching only)
Pioneer DVD Player
Magnavox DVD Recorder

Help me decide!

Since they all use the same software, either one will work with your equipment.

I have the 670, and got it primarily for the button placement and the buttons themselves. I found the 670 buttons easier to use.

I have a nephew who has the 880 and he likes my 670 more than the 880.

They are both very good remotes though.

Well, now I am looking at the 720, too. I originally passed it by because it was not the peanut shape, but people seem to like it a lot. I think I like the 720 over the 880, but still undecided between 720 and 670.

I was originally torn myself. The idea of the color display was nice. But I ultimately went with the 670. As for rechargeable, I thought about it and realized that in order for the remote to remain charged I would need to make sure it was on the cradle after each use. I just feel that is too much of an inconvenience. I prefer to just put the remote down after using it and forget about it afterwards. I don't want to have to go fetch it from the cradle either when I need it. Just get yourself a couple sets of AAA rechargeables. I use a lot of rechargeable batteried already so I have plenty. My brother who has the 670 says that he hasn't replaced the original batteries since he bought it 6 months ago.
I also have grown to like the button feel of the Tivo remote and the 670 has that feel. I read other reviews of the 880 where people disliked the button feel. I also read that the buttons are not as easy to differentiate without looking at the remote.
Now that I have the 670 in hand I am happy with my choice. And saved $50 to boot.

I let hubby have the deciding vote, so I just placed an order for the 670 from Amazon. Also the one seller on Amazon who had the best price on the 720 raised the price by about $22 so that made it easier to decide. I was limiting myself to Amazon sellers because I had gift certificates to use.

So on the 670, when you first pick up the remote, are all six soft buttons dedicated to additional activities (besides the 3 up top), or do you first have to press "More activities" to see additional activities on the LCD. Doesn't make a big difference either way, just something I wondered about as I was looking at info.

You have to push More Activities to see them on the LCD. I see the title Choose Activities ["Next" for more] followed by two activities. You can select the activities with both the left or right buttons. I have my remote set up so that the title of the activity shows on the screen when it is selected. I am not sure if you will see three activities if titles are turned off.

Is the software used to program the 720 the same as the software for the 670? Does it require internet access to program these remotes?

Yes to both questions.

Well I finally got the remote this week after Amazon dragged their feet on the shipping. Spent the past couple days tweaking and tweaking and think I finally have it pretty much set up the way I want. It was very time consuming because Logitech setup wasn't right for a lot of my devices... for instance, my receive had tons of commands in the database that aren't compatible with my receiver, and then my DVD Recorder had only the very basic commands. And I find the wizard approach to the software very frustrating.

Two things I wish I would have known about the 670 model before I bought it...
1) You can't set the order of the extra activities under "more activities." So my two least-used activities are on page one.
2) No favorite channels for this model.

However, I called Logitech today and was told that both of these things are on the radar for improvements.

But now that it is set up, I think I am going to like it. Nice to have the other 6 remotes in a drawer.

I was also torn between the 880 and the 670. Got the 880 but the buttons are too small and too close together. Am now considering the 670 once again although i will miss the recharging cradle.

Does the 670 have "tilt sensor" to turn on the backlighting when you pick it up or do you have to hit a button to wake it up?

Also, can you set the "glow timing" to turn off the backlights when not in use? thanks

There is no "tilt sensor". You can use the Glow button if you want the backlighting on. Mine only comes on when I press Glow, or use the buttons on the LCD screen for activities and devices. Also the Next button.

The backlight will go out by itself after a period of non-use. I have mine reduced to 5 seconds. If I need it again, I can hit the Glow button. With the button placement on the 670, it is easy to find. In fact, the buttons are easy to feel without using backlighting.

Thanks for the reply Billy. Lets assume that I pressed one of the "soft" buttons "Watch TV" and the remote turns on the necessary devices and sets the proper inputs. What is showing in the LCD screen? device choices pertaining to watching TV or more activities. (In other words if in the middle of one activity and you wish to go to an activity NOT programmed to the other soft buttons, do you have to hit "more activites" for the additional ones to be accessible?)

If you press "Watch TV", it will show choices for that activity. It mostly shows choices you have added for that activity.

If you want to choose an activity that is not assigned to one of the buttons, you have to press "More Activities".

Loving my 670 I have had for a week. We are heavy DVR users, so the button placement is great.

Like the hard jewel style buttons better than the flat ones of the 880. Will have to see how the rechargeable battery life is. I'm pimping this out to all my friends with PVR's ....great design for it.
