View Full Version : Speaker wire and line voltage - How close?

How close can you run speaker wire perpendicular to line voltage and not get interference? I keep reading you can run speaker wires parallel to line voltage with a 12" gap but I can't find a gap distance for perpendicular lines.

Also, would running the speaker wire through a PVC conduit across the line voltage help with interference?

Thanks!

Crossing wires perpendicular should not cause you any issues, even if they actually touch at the crossing point. Obviously if you can keep some space between the cross point, it can only help.

Okay, that sounds great. Will putting a PVC conduit between the line voltage and the speaker wire help?

Not sure, but it would certainly keep your wires looking much neater.

I installed BX (armoured cable) for all electrical circuits in the HT room. A bit more expensive, but the armour cladding is a shield and grounded. I also kept them 2 ft apart when running in parallel.
