HOLLYWOOD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The blockbuster hit from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, TRANSFORMERS, is the year’s top-selling week one DVD with North American sales reaching 8.3 million units since the title’s debut on October 16, it was announced today by Paramount Home Entertainment. The biggest original film of the year from director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS), is also the best-selling DVD day one for the year with over 4.5 million units sold on Tuesday. Additionally, the smash hit has exploded into the high definition market, selling over 100,000 HD DVDs its first day of release, rocketing past previous releases to become the best-selling day one high definition title on either format since their inceptions. TRANSFORMERS has sold over 190,000 HD DVDs in its first week making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format as well as the best selling HD DVD ever. The TRANSFORMERS DVD is also the top-selling October DVD release in the history of the home entertainment industry.

“The performance of the TRANSFORMERS DVD and HD DVD has demonstrated the phenomenal success of this global franchise,” said Kelley Avery, president, Worldwide Home Entertainment, Paramount Pictures. “We’re happy to be kicking off the fourth quarter with a title that clearly shows home entertainment releases are still an event that drives consumers into stores—which is a win for both content providers and retailers.” Earning over $700 million at the global box office, the live-action feature film TRANSFORMERS is the latest success in a worldwide franchise that has emerged as one of the most successful properties in action figure history, spawning numerous television series and comic books and a wealth of toys, games and other licensed merchandise. In 2007, TRANSFORMERS has become one of the hottest properties for boys in a variety of categories, including toys, publishing, video games, apparel and back-to-school. Hasbro’s licensing arm, HPG, has signed more than 250 licensees in 70 countries around the world.

The first live-action film based on the enduringly popular “ROBOTS IN DISGUISE”, TRANSFORMERS features the ultimate battle between good and evil, as the peace-loving AUTOBOTS seek to protect humanity from the evil forces of the DECEPTICONS. The TRANSFORMERS Special Edition two-disc DVD and HD DVD sets provide an incredible experience with an arsenal of bonus material that delivers excitement and fun for long-time fans, as well as for viewers who are new to the TRANSFORMERS universe. Further, the HD DVD includes a host of highly advanced web-enabled features that will continue to roll-out through the rest of the year.

In comparison, the numbers for 300 after one week were:

165K Blu Ray
85K HD
250K Total

Wow, I can't believe the HD version outsold their 300 counterpart 2.5:1. It looks like HD DVD has gained a ton of support since July. I can't imagine THAT many Dual format owners bought 300 on Blu Ray compared those DF owners who bought the HD version. I'm really curious to see how Spiderman 3 does on Blu Ray.

Hopefully this sets a precident for other releases to have BOGO deals! $14.99 for a new release is a great price!

190,000

I'm going to change my ratio estimates

So much for my guess that Transformers wouldn't match 300's sales for Blu-Ray the first week!

Certainly will go down in history as HD DVD's finest hour.

I wouldn't be surprized if it remains the best selling HD DVD ever.

Not me. I thought it would do pretty well, but it definately exceeds my thoughts on it. Good for Transformers.

Paramount has to be happy. Especially after watch the Blu-Ray studios having to give away free discs this week!

I bet the average Transformers disc sold for $27+ while the average BR disc this past week was maybe $18, maybe much less.

Impressive number.

Makes one think this could've been a half million units if it were still neutral...interesting.

It's a damn fine movie...numbers, sales, records, etc, are great, but in the end, we simply got to add another great exclusive flick to our collection, thats what matters to me anyway, let's hope there's more to come from P\DW! :)

Both sides are giving away "free" discs.

Wow, I didn't expect that at all. I don't think it will have the lasting power of 300 (although sales should stay relatively high next week too, especially with that BB 360 HD DVD addon + Heroes deal), but still an impressive week nonetheless.

I am sorry, but the numbers can't be true.

We have been told repeatedly by the BDA and the BD braintrust that HD DVD is a dead format.

Dead formats don't sell 190k discs of one movie in a week.

42,

Are these the Nielson numbers ?

did you ask the same question when Sony announced their numbers for CR?

Well I guessed it right. It sold more than 300 on blu the first week but not both combined.

I think this is very good news for HDM overall, while still getting killed by SD DVD at a 25:1 to rate, getting close to the quarter of a million units in sales at the $30 mark (i'm guessing a very TINY fraction of purchases were at the $15 price mistake) is nothing for a studio to sneeze especially considering there must be a MUCH higher profit margin to the studio from selling an HD DVD at $30 than an SD DVD at $15.

Can a format (blu ray or HD) be considered dead while moving this number of units? I don't think so. I think Dual Format winners will completely settle this format war.

ALL sales figures discussions belong in the format-specific sales figures threads.
