I see a few threads about this already, but wanted to post my problem as well. My 5 year old velodyne SPL 1200 II subwoofer will sometimes make a pop or click sound even when there is little or no sound during a movie... I have so far changed my sub cable and still nothing...

My subwoofer boost levels are set to none and the sub itself is set to a moderate volume. It still plays and sounds loud as ever, but it will pop or click from time to time - It tends to make the noise during quieter times during a movie. Many times its at the title screen of a DVD. Loud scenes seem to play fine with no signs of pushing the sub too far. Interference? something wrong with the receiver??

I would post this question to Curt on the Velodyne support thread.

It may just be the "auto on" circuit kicking in and out. My HGS makes a "tick" sound when it receives a signal hot enough to engage the circuit, this is normal. The problem that I had was that is was turning on and off at lower volumes and during quiet passages. You can do one of two things to remedy the problem. If you turn the sub's gain or volume down on the sub amp and bump up the sub trim it may not do this anymore. In my system the cutting in and out lessened, but it wasn't until I terminated both L and R inputs on the sub with a female to two male "Y" adapter that the problem stopped. Also try setting all speakers to small while troubleshooting to make sure there's always LF content present. Based on your description the sub seems to work fine and only does it with quiet passages. If the click sound isn't low in frequency and sounds more like someone flicked the driver with a fingernail then that's probably what's going on. Good luck.

Loose rca connectors that are built in to the amp plate can cause this too.
