Will there ever be a HD DVD recorder selling in the US that I can ues to record OTA HD broadcast TV that will preseve the 720p / 1080i res. or to copy all of my VCR tapes at a up-scaled res.. I ask this because I do not subscribe for cable or Sat. services. All of my TV viewing is from OTA or my collection of VCR and DVD's. I have seen DVD recorders with built-in ATSC tuner that can recieve and record digital programming, but will down res the HD signal to 480p res. when recording.

I've seen these made for PC's but have no desire to go this route.

Thanks to all who reply,

Some people seem to think so, but I personally don't.

You could always get a D-VHS deck with a built-in ATSC tuner.

You'll really need a HD-DVD or Blu-ray recorder for that. DVD won't really cut it.

High-definition broadcast content requires up to 8.6Gb per hour. A single layer DVD has about 4.7Gb usable while a dual-layer DVD has about 8.0Gb usable.
