View Full Version : Two baluns on one antenna?

Hi,

I am in the process of adding an UHF antenna to an existing VHF/UHF antenna.

I want to split the signals coming through the VHF/UHF close to the antenna mast for a reason I don't want to go into here. I happen to have an extra balun, so I am thinking of attaching two baluns to this antenna instead of using a splitter. Although I do have a splitter available, using two baluns will eliminate a few short-length cables from antena to the splitter.

Would there be potential drawbacks in this setup compared with using a splitter?

Using two baluns gives you an impedence mismatch. You'll lose more signal that way than through a splitter.

I will defer to the previous poster, who probably knows much more than I do, but I experimented with splitters vs extra baluns, and found I got the strongest signal with extra baluns. There were a couple of fringe stations I could not pull in using the splitter, but came in fine with an extra balun and cable run to the other TV.

In fact (brace yourself) I ran 3 different baluns and cables from the same antenna with no ill effects that I could detect. So I would at least experiment and see what happens, especially if it makes a difference in being able to pull in or not pull in weak stations.

Three different baluns touching each other at the connection of the antenna? I never thought that would work at all. I learned something new today.
