View Full Version : Is a PS3 worth getting now...
Rhino5167 10-23-07, 02:06 PM I just got a plasma last week and have my Xbox 360 hooked up, it looks great! I am thinking of getting a 60 GB PS3...my question is it worth getting it now or wait till some good games are out? I am not trying to start a Xbox vs PS3 war ...honestly. I am just looking for honest opinions from PS3 owners if you suggest to get a system now or wait till some more other games come out. One reason I have held back is the lack of quality games out there....just looking for your opinions..thanks
Replicant Nexus6 10-23-07, 02:10 PM What you're looking for, we cant give you. Others have tried and few have gotten what they wanted, which is a definitive yes or no.
If you have 400-600 dollars to spend on another game system, then do it.
If not, dont.
You'll get 500 reasons why you should and 500 reasons why you shouldnt asking here.
Save yourself the headache and make the decision yourself. Trust me, Im saving you some time here.
apodaca 10-23-07, 02:11 PM Worth it only if you also want a Blu-ray player. As a video game system I think it sucks and I see no reason why a 360 would not be a better game option. I have not had any great games to play on it for some time now but in my case it is also my Blu ray player so I tolerate it.

+1
If you're posting this question, it means you want one. Get it or don't. Simple.

That is the best line!! :D

I completly agree

This is what I was thinking...I am not a big movie fanatic, so I was looking to the PS3 for 1) gaming 2) Blu-Ray movies...so I think I may hold off then. I appreciate all the input!
WhoMe14 10-23-07, 02:23 PM Didnt take long for a troll to show up.
Ill just say that if you have the extra cash for another game system, then get it. Its a great peice of hardware and they are and will be exclusives worth playing on it.
I agree, you're asking, you have the funds, pull the trigger. I don't know what games you like but I can't wear out resistance it's simply awesome...
Agreed that you should get it now if you want a Blu-Ray player. If you are looking for gaming only, you need to look at the exclusives and decide for yourself. Personally, since you already have a 360, I think you'll find the exclusives on the 360 far outweigh those on the PS3. R&C is a blast though and will be the first game I buy for sure (20 movies thus far though!)
Rhino5167 10-23-07, 02:31 PM Didnt take long for a troll to show up.
I was not looking to stir the pot....it was a legit question on my behalf...
tbass2k 10-23-07, 02:43 PM I have all 3 systems, and the PS3 basically gets very minimal gaming love from me, it's cool for blu-ray, but like others have said, that is basically it. You wanted advice, not a decide for yourself answer, and if I was you, I would hold off, even if you have the money, (until some heavy hitters release) unless you want blu-ray playback capabilities. There just aren't any must-have exclusives on the PS3, and so far, most multi-platform games run better on the 360.
Rhino5167 10-23-07, 02:48 PM Thanks for the advice...
Kyser should put up a Locked Stickey "NO more asking should I get a PS3 Threads" The answer to this question in a PS3 forum is gonna be yes...those who say no are going to be labled as trolls, and fanboys of the other systems....
bassmonkeee 10-23-07, 03:00 PM Worth it only if you also want a Blu-ray player. As a video game system I think it sucks and I see no reason why a 360 would not be a better game option. You haven't had any great games, but I sure have....
Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Everyday Shooter, God of War 2, etc...
I could go on, but why bother? I'll be picking up Ratchet and Clank tomorrow, and Uncharted, and Haze and other games next month.
And, of course, the movies are nice, too.
It doesn't take a super genius to determine on their own based on what's available and what's coming up gamewise.
Man up and make a decision.
I mean how much time do you have to play games? There are games out there now that are worth playing
There are at least 5 BD I would recommend that are exclusives:
Resistance
Motorstorm
Ninja Gaiden
Heavenly Sword
Folklore
Ratchet and Clank
and many more PSN titles:
Super Stardust
Super Puzzle Fighter II
Everyday shooter
Flow
Calling all Cars
And one combo game (meaning you can buy a disk or from the PSN):
Warhawk
Plus it's also a Blu-Ray player.

It was worth it to me from day one.
txfilmguy 10-23-07, 03:08 PM Plus it's also a Blu-Ray player.
One of the best, if not THE best on the market.

Agreed, I hardly have enought time to play two of the 8 or so games I have or watch one of the 30 or so blue-ray movies that I've aquired since launch.... how in the world do you keep up with more than one onsole?
Daekwan 10-23-07, 03:09 PM I agree threads like this should be locked. You never get any true helpful information, just more wars.
As alot have said before.. this is a decision you should make yourself. If you do prefer the mostly "fan" advise you will recieve from owners of either console.. its plenty of other forums to ask it own where the guys can battle it out.
Also use the search button, there have been more than a few locked threads that have discussed this topic to death.

Pretty much.
If you don't want to spend the money, ask this question in the XBox forum. If you do want to spend the money, ask in the PS forum.
Easy enough....

I agree these types of threads can be more headaches then help, I was just looking to get input/advice from those who have purchased and had time to use the system. Again I didn't mean to start any controversy.. as you can see in my profile that I have numerous posts on this site in different rooms and not just trolling..
Daekwan 10-23-07, 03:19 PM Rhino trust its cool man. And I think you do have an honest question. Its just the emotional investment alot of people have with these consoles quickly push threads like off topic into some sort of mine is better than yours contest.
For what little help I can provide.. I'm an absolute 360 fan.. but I think the PS3 is worth every single penny. Where else can you buy that much technology for $399 or $499? Even if you are questioning the current game library, Sony is working very hard to bring their bigger more popular franchise titles out ASAP.
The PS3 looks to have a very strong lineup of Playstation Exclusive titles in 2008.
GW-SMOkeY 10-23-07, 03:27 PM I am not sure sometimes what is the point of this thread, but hey I'm a PlayStation guy, I had all systems but the Wii, and X360 for this new generation. Last Gen I had all... Now with PS3 and not getting a X360 when it was launched - I happen to enjoy the PS3.
Sure its my only Nex-Gen Console along with my PC.
Is it worth it? For 400 bucks and 500 bucks heck yes!
Is it a bargain? For what you get sure is, and the games are here...
briankmonkey 10-23-07, 03:32 PM The PS3 is a perfect fit for my home theater, great gaming and blu-ray movies. The selection of games is pretty good even if you filter out multiplatform games. And of course the library will continue to grow. Of course it really depends on what you like in the end. You can always go to gametrailers and watch videos of games you think you'd might be interested in to get a rough idea.
Not sure what genre's you like but some that suit my tastes:
Ratchet and Clank:comes out today I believe, the demo is a lots of fun.
Warhawk: great online if you like large scale battles, smaller ones are fun as well.
Resistance: is a lengthyquality first person shooter
Tekken 5:DR: excellent fighting game. Tekken 6 is coming as well.
Stuper Stardust HD: - arcade style shooter, kind of like a next gen Asteroids on crack.
Folklore: the demo is pretty cool for an action RPG, haven't picked this one up yet.
lots of racing games to try out as well. F1, Ridge Racer, Sega Rally, Dirt, etc.
Uncharted: Drake: coming soon looks very cool in the gameplay videos.
Bottom line is each system has games I enjoy.
----------------
edit: disclaimer of systems owned: I used to own a 360 ( until it fried, etc) and will buy my 3rd one again when the time comes. I can't even keep up with the PS3 games as is plus I still play the 360 at my friends house from time to time and he plays my PS3 so I'm not in any rush at this point. I also own a Wii but it is my least favorite gaming system, still has titles coming that I want like Mario Galaxy. All three have their pro's and con's which have been discussed many times already. I'm fortunate that I can enjoy all three.
tbass2k 10-23-07, 03:37 PM Rhino, I'm a gamer, so I'm coming from a gamer's standpoint first and then secondly from a multimedia standpoint. If I were you, I would mainly want to hear from gamers who have both systems and have spent numerous quality hours with both. It's true also that certain forums(blu-ray, hd-dvd, xbox, ps, etc) are mostly biased. I think we can all be adults about this though and truly give unbiased opinions, threads don't need to be locked because fanboys start getting prematurely sensitive about "their" system.
Grab a 60Gb before they are gone!
I'm being serious!

Dude, asking if a PS3 is worth getting in the Playstation forum is the same as asking a Xbox360 fanboy if the Xbox360 is better than a PS3....what do you think they are going to answer?

I disagree. Just answer the original post's question and move on to the next thread.
To OP: Do yourself a favor and get a PS3. I own a 360 myself and enjoy the PS3 just as much or more. I personally don't like to limit myself of great games just to group with a specific following of gamers of one console. Just enjoy the games both systems have to offer.

The reason for my question was I wanted to know if owners of the PS3 felt if it was a good time to get a system NOW or wait till more games came out. That is all I wanted to find out..I never questioned the worth of the PS3..

How can you possibly disagree with the truth? Read my last post and you will see what I think about asking these type of questions. This thread will be locked soon. I'm just saying, you can't ask certain questions in certain forums without getting biased, or wrong information.

I know man, and I wasn't trying to be rude or anything but still, what answer do you think you'll get asking that in here?
DubBucket 10-23-07, 04:08 PM Awesome how quickly all the non-fans jumped in with "Worth it only if you also want a Blu-ray player." There are tons of people on here that think otherwise, we're just not as avid trollers.
Rhino5167 10-23-07, 04:23 PM I know man, and I wasn't trying to be rude or anything but still, what answer do you think you'll get asking that in here?
In all honesty I was wondering if anyone out there felt that they purchased the system and perhaps regretted their decision to immediately get it when it hit the street due to the lack of game support. I loved my PS2 and hope that the game support will be there for the PS3
macdumpy 10-23-07, 04:28 PM Now that I have the PS3 I'm too busy playing Warhawk to read messages, plus I suspect that playing so many games has ruined my poor brain's language center.
I really like my PS3, was it worth it at 600$? For me, yes. Am I happy with my choice? Yes -- I actually complain I can't keep up with the games (i.e. play to completion or get bored before new ones come out). Is it a bluray player? For me, no, -- I can't bring myself to spend 20$ for 2hrs of entertainment, and, if I have 2 hours, I'd rather play a game. Is a 360 and a PS3 worth it? I don't know about that. 75% of all games are cross-platform. Unless you want a blu-ray player, I'm not sure a PS3 is worth 400$ -- if you already have a 360.
A Wii sits unloved here, unless there are non-gamers over. So, I can comfortably say I feel the Wii can use a true next-gen 'brother' -- the Wii augments any games room. I don't think there's a point in talking exclusives, as both systems are pretty amazing. If you were to have asked "is a PS3 worth it?" the answer, from me, is a resounding yes. But is a PS3 and 360 worth it? My gut says no. Given the choice between PS3 and 360, I chose the PS3, but if I already had a 360, I would have chosen a new couch, or a week in Cuba.
Nics1246 10-23-07, 04:28 PM In all honesty I was wondering if anyone out there felt that they purchased the system and perhaps regretted their decision to immediately get it when it hit the street due to the lack of game support. Yea, I feel ya. I also loved playing my brothers PS2 and thought that the Xbox couldn't even touch it. Right now though, Xbox360 has the better games IMO. That being said, I still do want a PS3 so that I can have a Blu Ray player, and because next year promises to be alot more kind as far as games coming out for the PS3.
phillipsolorio 10-23-07, 04:31 PM It was worth it to me from day one.
ditto, dont regret it one bit, bought a elite as well and feel that the 60gig at original price was a far better deal than the 360, however i do use the 360 alot more.
This is what I was thinking...I am not a big movie fanatic, so I was looking to the PS3 for 1) gaming 2) Blu-Ray movies...so I think I may hold off then. I appreciate all the input!
Two opinions by what looks ike non-gamers or trolls and that's it?
Go look at the line-up both now and by years end. I have a 360 also, but the PS3 offers plenty of content a good value (no nickel and dime add ons).
Motorstorm
Resistence
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Heavenly Sword
Warhawk
Eye of Judgement
Folklore
Ratchet and Clank
Uncharted
Haze
UT3
PSN games like:
Everyday Shooter
Superstardust HD
In addition you have one of best BD player on the market. As a bonus your PS3 won't sound like a jet engine and won't RRoD.
The reason for my question was I wanted to know if owners of the PS3 felt if it was a good time to get a system NOW or wait till more games came out. That is all I wanted to find out..I never questioned the worth of the PS3..
Socratic I know, but the only answer then consists of questions:
What kind of games would you like to play?
How many decent games do you consider "enough" for it to be worth your time and money?
Given that, people here have a decent knowledge of the library both available now and coming soon. We can help.
Otherwise, everyone will give you their answer, instead of yours.
bobbyslav 10-23-07, 05:06 PM This is probably the wrong thread to post on, but something's been bothering my mind for the last day or two, and not sure if someone might have an idea...
I think it's a perfectly good time to ask the original question of this thread right now, because the situation just changed - the PS3 is now cheaper, there are more differences between the various SKUs, and so on. I for one love these threads, because I can't make up my mind as well and get very annoyed when they are locked, simply because they are fun! Ha!
Now to my own wondering, if you will...
From what I've read both Microsoft and Sony lose an insane amount of money from the hardware, and are willing to do so because of profits from the software... so if that were the main source of profit, why would let's say MS not realese Halo for PS3? I mean if the thing is making so much money, I would imagine it will sell even more copies, thus making even more money...
Then why stop here? Why not make both consoles play either platform's games? Would that be impossible? I mean who cares how many consoles they sell if they are only losing money on them?
If the rumors about the Xbox 360 with HDDVD and two tuners are true, I wouldn't even consider a PS3 right now, but again it won't have Blu Ray... Obviously these companies make a lot more money from the media they sell, wouldn't it make so much more sense just everyone to offer everything at a loss, and then make up in enormous titles sales? The format war will be erelevant, the adoption will be much faster, people will stop worring about winners and losers, and the big companies will be richer than ever...
So I've been trying really hard but can't find anything wrong with my logic... Help!
I have both and I love both. I would say that my PS3 had mostly been used for BR movies, but that isn't the case anymore. Since you don't have one, you'll have the ability to enjoy the games coming out next month like Uncharted and Haze, AND catch up on the great games like Resistance, Motorstorm, etc. I'd get it and wouldn't look back.
If the rumors about the Xbox 360 with HDDVD and two tuners are true, I wouldn't even consider a PS3 right now, but again it won't have Blu Ray...
If the rumors are true, and I don't believe they are, the earliest you could expect that system would be late 2008 or early 2009 at CES. If they do end up launching this system, my guess would be the middle of 2009 at the earliest. I doubt that Toshiba would want to put their name on something with as many hardware failures as the 360. They would need to fix this first and by the way things are looking, it would be a large mountain to climb.
kbourda 10-23-07, 05:19 PM In all honesty I was wondering if anyone out there felt that they purchased the system and perhaps regretted their decision to immediately get it when it hit the street due to the lack of game support. I loved my PS2 and hope that the game support will be there for the PS3
I for one traded my 360 in to get a PS3 60GB. I haven't looked back yet. For me, it is the system I hoped the 360 would have been. Everything built in one unit (Wifi, Bluetooth capable, Blu-Ray, etc.) is the thing I was looking for in the beginning. Call me crazy but I own 8 games for my PS3 and plan on getting may more soon. So when people say there aren't any games on the PS3 they mean to say there aren't any games that THEY would like to play. So don't go by what people say about the library the PS3 has or doesn't have. BTW, need we forget about the lack of support for the 360 for the first year and a half as well. Saying all of this I still feel the 360 is a quality system. But I would choose the PS3 10 times out of 10. With the 399 price tag for the up coming PS3 it would be a no brainer for me. I think the only thing that would get me back to a 360 would be: make it Wifi, built in HD-DVD, and make the system more PC friendly. Microsoft charges for Xbox Live (excellent service BTW), PSN is free. Difference? Depends on you. I say free is me all day long but that's my opinion. Just know what kind of gamer/ home theater guy you are and decide from there. Good luck.
HeadRusch 10-23-07, 06:58 PM Rhino, I'm a gamer, so I'm coming from a gamer's standpoint first and then secondly from a multimedia standpoint. But there's no way around the obvious: Some folks are going to insist R&C, Warhawk and Motorstorm are games worth spending $400+ to play, others are not and are going to say "there are better games and more of them on the 360". Others will say "A Wii is the only fun gaming system out there" and still others will say "Dude, a HTPC will smoke every lame-assed console out there, build one of those!".
Is it worth it to get a PS3 now? No. Wait another few months when they'll probably be $250........and some top-tier games might be out for the system, it'll take a Killzone or a GT game to really get the system flying off the shelves.
There won't be another price drop for at least a year, so waiting will only guarantee you won't get a 60GB and maybe miss the five free movies, not much else.
HeadRusch 10-23-07, 07:36 PM There won't be another price drop for at least a year, so waiting will only guarantee you won't get a 60GB and maybe miss the five free movies, not much else.
That will largely depend on how the system sells through the holiday season.
Its lost 1/2 its original value (nearly) in less than 12 months, so I wouldn't be too quick to assume this is the end of the freefall.
Likely? No..but, I'd say this: Until at least 2-3 must-have, must-play games that are only available on the PS3 fill the buyers criteria......or he falls in love with collecting BD movies...he should likely wait and see what the holidays offer.
If the system isn't selling briskly going into the holidays expect to see, if not an overall price drop, then store-specifc price drops and value-added bundles.
Chuck12 10-23-07, 07:38 PM After this price drop I picked one up for the exclusives (I have a 360 too)......but then something happened. I plopped in Casino Royal and was blown away. What a format, I can't wait to start building my blu-ray collection.
Check out their library of games and decide if it's worth the money to you. Everybody has different tastes.
Because I have both a 360 and a PS3, I get all the chicks. So I would say you should only get a PS3 if you want all the chicks.
Daekwan 10-23-07, 07:44 PM Dammit.. I want all the chicks!
DubBucket 10-23-07, 07:45 PM Its lost 1/2 its original value (nearly) in less than 12 months, so I wouldn't be too quick to assume this is the end of the freefall.
Say what? From 600 and 500, to 500 and 400. Half? What was that about bias again?
Bryan_P 10-23-07, 08:07 PM I got a PS3 about a month ago mostly for Blu-ray and as a Blu-ray player I love it. That said, I will be buying my first game this weekend (Guitar Hero III) and while I might get Ratchet and Clank, there's not a lot out there presently that I care about. If you want cool HD games, it's hard to go wrong with the 360. On the other hand PS3 will undoubtedly have some great games in the future, and $400 isn't too bad a chunk of change to drop on such a powerhouse.
That will largely depend on how the system sells through the holiday season.
Its lost 1/2 its original value (nearly) in less than 12 months, so I wouldn't be too quick to assume this is the end of the freefall.
Nice spin. It had one staggered price drop.
Old SKUs:
20GB/60GB $499/$599
New SKUs:
40GB/80GB $399/$499
Thinking they will have a price drop to $250 in a few months is stupid, sorry.
briankmonkey 10-23-07, 08:25 PM Hmm, I must have missed the press release on 20GB's now being $250 and the 60GB's now being $300.
The answer is actually quite simple. If you plan on getting a PS3 at some point in the PS3 life's cycle, then why wait? The current pricing is actually quite competative, especially for the amount of hardware you are getting. I do not think that there will be a dramatic drop in price anytime soon.
As a tri-console owner, I have the option to buy any game for any system and play with anyone. Unfortuantely, at this point in the gaming cycle, all crossplatform games I will buy on the Xbox because of 1)friends list 2)gamerpoints. This leave PS3 exclusives as the only gaming I will do on PS3. So far I have 2 games, R:FoM and WarHawk (which is still in the wrapper) and I am debating if I should exchange it in for R&C instead (or keep Warhawk and exchange in PGR4 (still in wrapper) for R&C, or keep all games and just buy R&C (decisions, decisions).
The funny thing is, even though the PS3 has not seen that much love from me, I am still glad I bought it, and I have enjoyed the blu-ray part of it. I have no regrets, and if I were to buy one now, I would get the 80G version as it has dropped in price with the free Motorstorm, I would get that one, because I am never going to play PS2 games, as the ones I have look absolutely horrible, especially on the projector).
400 dollar is cheap enough for me to get it for bluray play back.
rkgriffin 10-23-07, 09:40 PM Talk about battle of the fanboys, this thread is making them all come out.
The facts are that now that the PS3 is finally getting a nice amount of games on the market it is a good buy. Plus is plays Blu-Ray if you are into movies, however a lot of people aren't into HD movies so that is not a selling point for some.
The PS3's biggest problem is that it is trailing the 360 in its user base. If you look at a lot of the fanboy threads like this one it is people who already own a 360 wondering if the PS3 is worth it. I say yes (I own both) but, i can see why the PS3 might not be worth it if someone doesn't like Blu-Ray movies or they already have a ton of games for the 360.
If you look at the game line ups for the holiday season both consoles have great games. The PS3 for the most part matches the 360 in holiday games (though a few delays really hurt bad) but, that is were its problem is. For the PS3 to start to catch up it needs to have a "better" line up than the 360. Until that happens it won't start flying off the shelves. Doesn't matter if it is the best Blu-Ray player out there.
If you don't own either console yet, then you need to ask yourself if you like Blu-Ray movies and what are all your friends going to be playing for the next year. You really can't go wrong with either console right now. And that is what is really driving all the fanboys crazy... the consoles are so equal now.
Even if I hadn't bothered to spend more on games than I did for either my PS2 or my Xbox ($50 and $0, respectively, the one PS2 game being GT4, and the Xbox being solely used for media playback through XBMC) I'd still find the PS3 to be worth every penny of the $350 I spent on it. (a 60GB for $499 from sonystyle with $150 off for opening a sony card account)
Given the media playing capabilities, it having the option to run Linux, and the easily upgradable hard drive I'm quite happy.
If anything, I'm a little miffed at my purchase because there are more good games out than I would like to have spent the money on!
I'd wait just a little longer if you plan to get a PS3, I don't expect the price to drop again, but there are bound to be special packages as we get closer to Xmas.
Unless you want Backwards Compatability then get a 60GB now before they all disappear.
To me a PS3 is definitely worth it, the libraries for all the nextgen consoles are remarkably simliar to the last gen, at least in demographic appeal. So if you liked the PS2 library in the last gen, then you'll like the PS3.
DarkSynbois 10-24-07, 07:35 AM PS3 is totally worth it, since the price dropped (down to $450.00 from the $700.00 CND launch price). That being said, I'm still waiting for some RPGs to come out, before I go and buy one. For Bluray and whatnot, its an exceptional deal.
