View Full Version : Cables question

I have recently switched from Dish (E*) to cable. When the installer put in the main line for HD in the living room he ran all new cable. He said he was not allowed to use the cable that remained from the satellite service. He also said that I should run new cable for the other rooms (bedroom which will have a digital DVR if that matters and a back room with just basic cable) and not use what is already there. Is there anything different about the cable that was run for the satellite service versus cable for TWC? If not, is there any reason to run new coax from the splitter to the other rooms?

My last question is about the splitter. I will have roadrunner service, HD service in one room, digital DVR in a bedroom, and basic cable in the same room as the roadrunner. The splitter the installer left for outside has 3 outputs. Two are labeled 7db and one is 3.5db. Should I hook the HD line and roadrunner up to the 7db outputs and the bedroom up to the 3.5db or does it really matter? Thanks in advance for all of your help!

William

If it's standard RG-6, it will work fine.

I am sure this is a dumb question, but is the RG-6 stamped on the cable somewhere or is it something you can tell just by looking at it? The part that is outside (not under my house at the moment to check) has nothing stamped on it, but looks a lot like regular coax.

Do you happen to know the answer to the splitter question I had? Thanks again for the help.

Personally I'd hook the HD or roadrunner to the 3.5db output, the number represents the amount of signal loss per output, the lower the better.

The cable should have it printed or imprinted somewhere on the jacket.
