View Full Version : Getting Married...I want a Projector!!!
PhysEdTeacher 10-23-07, 05:06 PM Hello all, I'm a newb to this site and registered to get some advice from projector enthusiasts. I'm getting married Nov. 3rd and just did a complete renovation on the house we bought. Instead of buying a 52" LCD and mounting it on the wall like everyone else on my block, I would like to do something way cooler and different. The room is 14' wide x 18' long with 8' ceilings. It is the living room with an 8' window centered in the 18' wall. The screen will be fixed to the 14' wall. My budget is tight with the wedding and all the expenses of fixing the house. For sound I will probably keep my Sony system I have set up in my room for now. I have been doing a lot of research and hope to make the right choice. For a projector I like the Panny ax200u, or the Epson HC 1080p. And now noticed the Epson HC 720p but have not read any reviews on it. I will be viewing mostly sports and movies, especially now that my fiance and I have become "stay at home" movie buffs. We just don't have the money to go out anymore... I have not done my homework on screens yet and hope to learn what works best for rooms such as mine. I'm hoping to go 92"-106". Thanks for any advice
Anthony
Bachiano 10-23-07, 05:20 PM Welcome to the forum - PhysEdTeacher.
This thread should be fun.
Wow, getting married and wanting a Pj.
How does the future wife feel about it?
This hobby will only works if your better half is supportive.
Congrats on the future wife and
Congrats on the future Projector ;-)
P.S. "don't have the money to go out anymore"
When you finish setting up your PJ/theater, It is going to look and sound so good you won't want to go out even if you had the money.
reconlabtech 10-23-07, 05:22 PM It sounds like you have been doing some reading and some learning. It also looks like you have an idea of what you want to get as well. make sure you will be able to control any light from that big window during the day or you will need a flat panel anyway.
My advise: Buy what you need NOW because after the wedding you will be broke. Trust me on that one!

Hey - I got an Idea.
Put everything you need in the wedding registry.
elmalloc 10-23-07, 05:44 PM superior idea man.
Not sure why, but I giggled when I read "PhysEdTeacher" talk about doing his homework on PJs.
Yeah...just register at Frys.......

I agree. In fact, buy a Sim2 C3x as soon as possible. You may end up having to trade it in for a minivan down the line though. Trust me! :D
tattootearz 10-23-07, 06:20 PM I actually just wanted to say congrats on the soon-to-come wedding!
Do not buy a projector because you don't have enough money to go to the movies. You can go to a lot of movies... and I mean a lot of movies for the price of a projector. Further, if you buy a projector, you will be being your first projector... not your last. Trust me (and everyone else in the pj forums) on this one. With each new projector you buy, that will be hundreds more movies you could have gone to see in the theater for less overall money. I'm not even adding in the cost of buying or renting the movies. Unless you start having a lot of kids, and I mean a lot of kids, the economics will never favor a home theater.
Top 10 Reasons to buy a projector:
(10) no kids will kick the back of your seat (or at least not ones you can't spank)
(9) no 20 minutes of previews to sit through
(8) you're never late to your own home theater, so you won't miss the beginning
(7) the black levels (if you get the right pj and the right room) are better than at the cinema
(6) the picture quality (especially HD-DVD/Blu-ray) is better than most cinemas (if you get the right pj)
(5) you can pause and go to the bathroom or get snacks or whatever without missing anything
(4) you can turn the sound down or up whenever you want
(3) you can watch HDTV sports (and other programs) on the big screen
(2) you can play Halo, World of Warcraft, Wii sports, or whatever is your fancy on 106" (guestimate) of goodness, and last but not least
(1) 4 letter word that beings with "P" and ends with "n"
PhysEdTeacher 10-23-07, 07:16 PM Thanks for all the congrats guys!!! Yeah she's all for the pj so far, just didn't mention the bulb replacement costs. She doesn't need to hear all the details. I tried the registry thing but she thought I was joking. She had her bridal shower already and got plenty of pj's, the newlywed ones. Man I can't wait to see those. What does that last guys about a year.

6 months maybe.
whiskey > work 10-23-07, 07:24 PM congrats, but your life is now over! Weekends filled with pointless trips to the supermarket and emptying poopy diapers are in your future. :)
frank456 10-23-07, 07:32 PM Panasonic pt-ax200.
Living room with WAF will most likely prohibit the boarding up of the windows so you need a low cost high performance unit with lots of light output so you can still keep the room family friendly.
At 1200$ nothing touches it for placement flexibility and picture performance.

If she hasn't been faking all along, it lasts as long as you do your job.
DRAGON52 10-23-07, 08:19 PM You can save a lot of money by building your own screen with Designer White laminate or some even cheaper DIY screens-----look in the screen forum.
My DW screen is really very satisfying and cost about $130 to build----about 2 hrs work to build and hang it.
You're obviously handy so no problemo there
Work at being happy----money isn't everything----Congrats

what is WAF? Sorry but still learning the buzz words. If you talk cars or sports I understand it all, but in the pj world I'm still learning. From reading I like the price and features of the Panny, also alot of people seem happy with its performance. About the screen, I'll look into how to make one but what options should I be looking into for my room.

Actually, u may found the opposite providing your other half has a decent job;).....my 'broke' days were over when I married my wife (in Healthcare). I had less money when I was single compared to the combined income that we are making now.:D

I think for him it will be,
Woman Approval Factor, until he gets married
and then it becomes,
Wife Acceptance Factor, after the marriage.

We both make decent money, we're both teachers and I'm also in real estate. Its just the cost of living on Long Island, and as a young couple a $3,000 a month mortgage with $10K/yr taxes, its hard to save for anything. My broke days started when I bought this house.
