View Full Version : Noob OTA TV antenna
swatoke 10-23-07, 07:01 PM Hi,
I live in McKinleyville Ca (Humboldt County, 95519), I would like to switch from cable to satellite. I need advice on an OTA antenna so that I can receive the local channels. I entered my information at antennaweb.org and I think it recommends a medium directional antenna to receive all digital stations in the area. Here are the results:
yellow - vhf KEET-DT 13.1 PBS EUREKA CA 138° 16.0 11
yellow - uhf KAEF-DT 22.1 ABC ARCATA CA 138° 16.0 22
yellow - uhf KVIQ-DT 6.1 CBS EUREKA CA 138° 16.0 17
green - uhf KBVU-DT 29.1 FOX EUREKA CA 139° 16.0 28
red - uhf KIEM-DT 3.1 NBC EUREKA CA 134° 16.2 16
Here are a couple of antennas that I a considering.
Channel Master CM 3677
Winegard HD 7080P
Are these two antennas good choices or are they overkill for the 16 mile distance? Could I go with something smaller? I have tried an indoor antenna and got 2 stations clear but still had occasional breakup. I do have a HDTV but unfortunately there are no HD stations in this area yet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
nybbler 10-23-07, 10:46 PM You could get a shorter antenna, but the width is set by the need for the antenna to receive Channel 2. Since you don't have any channels from 2-6 in your area, you could instead get a UHF only antenna and a VHF-high-only (channels 7-13) antenna like the Winegard YA-1713. This is likely to cost more and be a bigger pain to install but if there are space constraints it might make sense.
Edit: Nevermind. As pointed out below, there will be UHF low station involved, so stick with your original plan.

Are you looking at an outdoor mount or in the attic? You have 1 upper VHF station on VHF 11, the rest are UHF. If you want something more compact, the Channel Master 4221 4 Bay bowtie is a possibility, but is a bit iffy for picking VHF 11. I expect it will work as my CM 4221 picks up a digital VHF 12 station at 40+ miles, but YMMV. The Winegard HD7080P or the HD7082P on the roof should do the job.
swatoke 10-24-07, 12:13 AM Thanks for the responses. I am looking for a roof mount, size does not mater just didn't want to get something to large if I didn't need it. I was thinking about a uhf/vhf because of the one channel in my area and because I have been reading that when the hd switch over happens in 2009 some tv stations may not keep their channels at the present frequency.

Available through Stark Electronics for $29.95 plus shipping.
Actually you may not want to consider the HBU22 because as of this time KIEM has chosen Channel 3 after the analog shutdown. In February 2009 you may need an antenna such as the CM 3677 or W HD 7080P to receive that station.

Sammer is correct. I should have looked this up before I posted last night. KIEM-DT NBC 3 will be switching from UHF 16 to VHF 3 after the analog shutdown in February, 2009, one of the very few stations in the US going back to low VHF. So ignore my suggestion of a CM 4221 or any suggestions for a UHF and upper VHF only setup. A full range VHF-UHF antenna is needed to for the Eureka, CA market. Look at the Winegard HD7080P or HD7082P.
swatoke 10-24-07, 03:14 PM Thank you very much for your suggestions and advice. I think I will order the Winegard HD7080P. I am hoping we get HD here soon. I was told by the local cable company last December that the local CBS affiliate was going to have HD available soon and we still don't have it. This area always seems to be behind the times.
Thanks again

mikemikeb 10-25-07, 10:11 AM Especially in this case. Why can't 13-1 move to VHF 13, opening room for channel 11 to be used by KIEM-DT if they want to be on VHF post-transition so much?
It's like in Philly where WPVI-6 is moving its DT operations to VHF 6 in '09. Isn't VHF 12 open?
nybbler 10-25-07, 10:46 AM No. VHF 12 is occupied by WHYY. VHF 7, 11, and 13 are used in New York (11 and 13 in Baltimore also, IIRC), VHF 10 is used in Harrisburg, VHF 9 in Bethlehem.
