View Full Version : recessed lighting questions
tubaprde 10-23-07, 08:29 PM Hi, I've searched the forums but have not found what I am looking for...I have a few questions on lighting with a projector in a 14x14foot room, 8 foot ceilings...
-Which is best and why: incandescent or halogen or ect...?
-What are pinhole baffle recessed lights, why are they good, what do they do?
-Where should one put their recessed lighting in a home theatre? Over the couch in the back? in the middle? only on the sides? I have my ideas for this but I would like to see if there is a general rule of thumb for these.
Any answers or links to other threads that discuss this is much appreciated.
Thank you

hey, i was the one who started that thread, so i guess not, thanks for the close-up....did you use halogen or incandecent?
BIGmouthinDC 11-01-07, 01:19 PM I used a combination of 6 and 4 inch IC AT Progress brand recessed cans and pinhole baffles. I went with Incandescent. Keep in mind you can stick a halogen bulb in there if you want.
You can also use smaller bulbs. I have a series of 4 inchers over a bar and I'm using 30 watt bulbs for that location.
are there any restrictions with those pin baffles? I bought 8 recessed lights from a menards and they came with normal looking baffles. I would like to replace the baffles on the two closest to where my screen will go to that pinhole baffle look. just wondering if there are any precautions I should be aware of by doing so.
I'm using 75 watt halogens in them now so was worried heat may be an issue?
also what is the difference between halogen and this "incandescent" lighting?
tubaprde 11-02-07, 09:19 AM also what is the difference between halogen and this "incandescent" lighting?
yes..i would like to know this too, for theatre specific application, also 6500k, does that matter?
incandescent- tungsten filament, evaporated tungsten is the black powder you see in one that is burnt out.
halogen- tungsten filament, also burns evaporated tungsten which yields greater luminosity (and heat). at 120v frequently sold with a parabolic aluminized reflector (called PAR) available in multiple beam widths.
12 volt halogen lamps include mr16, mr11, bi-pin (which have an even better color rendering than 120v halogen buyt require a 12v fixture/transformer)
huh... Right now I have 65 watt westinghouse flood lights in my recessed fixtures. The guy at Menards recommended them.
guess its time to go look for some different ones.

Thanks Doby. It sounds like halogen would be best for hometheatre use b/c it you can control the beam width. But can you get halogen at 6500k?

I'm using Sylvania 50 watt R20 reflector spot bulbs in my pinhole cans. That bulb is 2 1/2 inches wide and just about the same size as the pinhole for my 6 inch can. Works fine.
