What is the sound difference between the box design and the cylinder design? Is it just a cosmetic and space preference? I am looking into getting the new Ultra.

The difference in sound is fairly small, but the small advantage goes to the box.

It's more of a cosmetic and design preference. The cylinders take up less floor space, weigh a bit less which usually results in a little better shipping cost and are easier to move, not as hard on the back at the expense of being taller and only one finish option.

the box designs give a more traditional design with more finish options and weigh more in comparison and takes up a little more floor space. Performance wise, providing your talking about comparable models their should be no difference.

There is no difference in quality, just the box has a smidgen more volume so it is tuned slightly differently. Not enough to make much of a difference. So, buy what style you prefer.

Anyone ever feel a box, and a cylinder, to tell the difference in external vibes. I would think the box is more apt to keeping the vibes at bay.

It depends on if it's a female or male sub. Females are more prone to mood swings therefore one would think the male should be more apt to keeping the vibes at bay. Given the fact I've not been trained in the gendor detection of a subwoofer I would say it's a toss up.

Call me old school but I like the passive cylinders. Yes they will end up costing more once you factor in a decent amp and outboard filter box / crossover. In my situation I feel I have more flexibility with the passive subs. The only passive box sub SVS made was that crazy B4 thingy that weighed a gazilion pounds.

They made passive cylinders for a long while. They were the CS series.

I think there are a lot of factors in the external vibes. Floor the sub stands on, internal bracing (for boxes), driver, ports/port size, etc.

I think that, generally, the cylinders are slightly less expensive than the comparable, basic finish, box.

I want one on my front porch.

I keep two in my shed. I save money with no need for fuel stabilizer.
