I want to get the Planet Earth series and I have a PS3 with a 37 D62U Aquos.

I will be adding the upcoming 360 (w/ HD DVD add on) to my collection and now have the options of getting either format.

I was just wondering how the 2 compare to each other? I understand Blu Ray is a more complex technology to develop for and was thinking maybe Planet Earth would be better on HD DVD but I thought I would get a more accurate answer if I asked you guys for help.

Is one format better than the other?

This HD DVD release of 'Planet Earth' shares an identical 1080p/VC-1 encode with the Blu-ray

Compared to the video, the audio is a bit of a disappointment, with BBC offering only a single audio track on both the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions of 'Planet Earth.'

So in this case it won't matter which format you choose

I would personally go with the BR in this case -- PS3 is a better player than the HD DVD add-on.

Planet Earth is the same on both BR and HD DVD though, so it becomes a matter of price and player. If you can find a copy cheaper on HD DVD go for it, likewise if you can find it cheaper on BR -- if not then it's up to which player you prefer using (in this case PS3 is better than the HD DVD add-on). The BR version also has a better scratch coating (which may or may not be appreciated by you -- not sure how kindly you handle your discs).

You could really flip a coin -- the end experience while watching it will likely be the same, for all intents and purposes.

with a 37" hdtv, id just go for sd version; unless u plan on getting a pj or much larger flat panel some day, then 'future proof' the setup and get either hd version.

As stated previously, the two are essentially identical. Pick whichever format that you believe is more likely to be well-supported three or five years from now.

Considering the Blu-ray and HD-DVD case for Planet Earth doesn't work very well and the discs keep popping out of its place, I would choose the Blu-ray version as there is no chance it will get scratched if that happens...

Is this guy being serious? Should I just buy the SD DVDS for my 32 incher instead of experiencing high def on my 37" lcd?

I have the HD DVD version and I think it's great, I'm sure the blu version is just as good. A great showpiece for high-def.

Yeah but Westgate makes it sound like HD experience is worthless on a 37" LCD. Way to destroy the confidence I had in my 1500 dollar investment Westgate. Seriously though Im gonna get the Planet Earth on blu ray or hd dvd REGARDLESS of what you say. I'm not gonna let you hold me down.

I wouldn't buy the SD version. I have a 37" Sharp too -- and just got the Blu-ray version of Planet Earth. It looks amazing. Much better than it did on cable, to say the very least!
