View Full Version : hd camcorders compatible with ps3? streetcredit 10-24-07, 02:08 AM Are there hd camcorders that can burn video to standard dvds for playback on ps3 in hd? or is there any simple solution to this problem? Any camcorders you can recommend? zBuff 10-24-07, 02:20 AM From what I've been reading in the Camcorder section of AVS, most of them do. This is via a PC and the software that typically comes with the camcorder. Not sure if any of them directly write to DVD, but there is a Hitachi out in Japan right now (but no the US yet) that writes directly to Bluray. Everyone seems to recommend the Canon HV20 if you want the best quality but be aware that this is still a tape based camcorder. Whoops sorry about that yes the HV20, will go back and correct my post Kestin M 10-24-07, 07:38 AM I have the Sony HDR SR5 and wou can play the files straight from the camera on the PS3. No editing or converting necessary. It is a HD based camera though. You would have to copy the files fom your camera to your desktop/laptop and then burn them to dvd if you wanted to play them from a dvd. If the clips are short enough, you can copy them to any memeory card you want. These "raw" files are not playable on other dvd players, but play without any issues on the PS3. Kestin streetcredit 10-24-07, 07:47 AM Thanks for the help....any idea on what format the files are in? I understand that panasonic has a camcorder that is bundled with a dvd burner, has anyone tried it? Kestin M 10-24-07, 08:27 AM Thdy are .mts files from the sony. Kestin Mindwarper 10-24-07, 01:35 PM I'm curious how you exported the files. Do you capture the HD files in premeire? What do you export the HD files as? Are they 720P ? Kestin M 10-24-07, 01:48 PM I just plugged the camera into my desktop via USB. I copied the files to the HD and then copied the ones I wanted onto a 2gb SD Card. I have only done this as a test so that I could archive my footage. I have not edited any footage at all. Just copied clips. I am not sure if they are 1080i or 720p. I am at work and can't check now, but I will check tonight. The first thing that came to my mind was that they are 1080i, but don't hold me to that. Feel free to email me at kestinthemoth@aol.com, and I will send you a link to d/l a couple of short clips that you can play on your PS3. I don't want to post a link here, as I don't have unlimited bandwidth. For me personally, the clips look great. I use this camera strictly for taking video of the new baby and the nieces and nephews. I am not trying to make "films". Kestin Kess 10-24-07, 02:05 PM I have the Sony SR7...an amazing HD camera. Takes unbelievable shots, in any lighting situation. I use Sony Vegas and Nero to get the files on my PS3. Sony Vegas to edit, add special effects, etc., and Nero to burn an HD “data disc”, to slip into the PS3. The final results are almost lossless. You don’t get chapter markers on a data disc, but the PS3's FF is so good that you get through a 30 minute video in seconds. I don’t ever go from the camera straight into the PS3, though. I like to edit stuff, take out all the crazier camera movements that can make you sea sick sometimes. With the SR7, you do get an AVCHD (in and out) program to make HD DVDs but all you can really do with it is delete scenes. Plus, there’s a VERY maddening bug that when you use it, it puts a half-second pause between all your scenes. (Every time you’ve pushed record, you've created a new scene.) It’s very frustrating, to say the least. If, however, you use this program, and burn “Straight to DVD” you don’t get the stupid pauses between scenes. The PQ is stunning on the PS3 whatever route you take, fortunately. Wether through Vegas and Nero (which is VERY simple to use) or through the camera’s own HD DVD maker. Do a search of my name for a very detailed post on using Vegas and Nero, if you’re interested. igreg 07-23-09, 01:16 AM I have the Sony SR7...an amazing HD camera. How in the world do you go right into the PS3? To my knowledge the PS3 does not have an HDMI in port for connecting the camcorder to the PS3. Thanks! zBuff 07-23-09, 02:02 AM Using the USB port on the dock connector to the PS3 I would imagine igreg 07-23-09, 02:30 AM Using the USB port on the dock connector to the PS3 I would imagine So you can use the USB port and still tranmsit HD? I thought you had to use HDMI or component? Thanks. zBuff 07-23-09, 03:53 AM USB will just transport the pure data stream to the PS3 ie just like to a computer, all camcorders nowdays are digital, so it is just like transferring over an avi file or a youtube video hotmoosettu 07-23-09, 09:42 AM I've got the panny sdc9 i believe it is (hd, 60gb internal hdd). It has some pretty impressive quality video, and like zBuff said, mine's got either a mini-hdmi, mini-usb, or av composite out. So to transfer straight to the ps3 i just hook it up via usb and send the files over and bam, hd vid on the ps3. Works really well and i avoid having to put it on the computer and then move it again to the ps3. So I guess a response to your question is that you can't "stream" camcorder video to the ps3 that I am aware of (at least not from the camcorder directly). Only way to do that would be to hook up the camera straight to your display device and play it off of there. serlenbeck 07-23-09, 10:07 AM I stream with my Component hooked up to my Denon Receiver. Works great! I may however; try transferring files into the PS3 via usb connect. igreg 07-23-09, 01:32 PM I've got the panny sdc9 i believe it is (hd, 60gb internal hdd). Your first paragraph implies to me that you can transfer HD to your PS3 via USB directly, but your second paragraph implies to me that you can not. I'm confused! I am looking to purchase a HD camcorder, but I do not have a free HDMI input on my televison (the sole HDMI input is used by my PS3), so if I could connect the camcorder directly to the PS3 to see HD on my Panasonic commericial plasma that would be great. Info appreciated as I can not find the answer elsewhere. Thanks!! vinhmen 07-23-09, 06:12 PM The answer is yes - you can connect your camera to the PS3 via USB and play the files directly from your camera. igreg 07-23-09, 07:37 PM The answer is yes - you can connect your camera to the PS3 via USB and play the files directly from your camera. Great. Thanks! That will let me experience the HD until I can purchase a new computer with a blu-ray burner. vinhmen 07-24-09, 03:35 PM I doubt you need a blu-ray burner to create HD home video discs. My Canon came with basic software to burn HD files to a blank DVD using my laptop DVD burner. The DVDs play beautifully in the PS3 and even have a DVD-like menu to select scenes (files). Even easier is to buy a camera that records directly to flash cards and then plug the card into the PS3 (via USB card reader) and copy the files direct to the PS3 for viewing. This option however fills up the standard PS3 drive pretty quickly as HD files are fairly large. |
