View Full Version : Media server not found...but wait...

Is it just me or do others have this problem too? Whenever I ask the PS3 to search for the media server, it never finds it (TVersity). After maybe 5 minutes or so, the server is found. Even if the server is already found and displayed on the screen, and I accidentally hit the search option it comes back with no server found and I have to wait again
Do I have something set incorrectly??
Any help appreciated.
Cheers.

On my wired network the servers are found 100% of the time. I frequently restart the servers, either mediatomb on linux or TVersity on Windows and can watch the icons disappear and reappear almost instantly in the XMB. For instance on Linux, the command /etc/init.d/mediatomb restart will cause the server to close and then reappear on the XMB within seconds of being issued.

So it can work quite well. I would suggest that you check your network, IP port, upnp and all that stuff.

I have had this happen once or twice with Tversity, but not a recurring thing. I found when it doesn happen, restarting my PC clears it up.

I don't use TVersity. I just use WMP.

However, the Media Server gives me loads of problems. Whenever I have the Media Server enabled, I have connection errors with my network. It says I'm connected to the actually network, but 2/3rds of the time it won't let me establish a NAT type. As such, I can't log into PSN or connect to my pc to stream stuff. On the rare occasion that I can connect, everything streams fine and online play, etc. works flawlessly.

This only happens when the Media Server is enabled. When it's disabled, everything works as it should. I'm logged into PSN 100% of the time.

Does anybody know what could be causing this? I'm connected via wi-fi, btw.

Probably the wi-fi setup. Can you test it with wired networking?

Thanks for the responses guys.
It must be something to do with my wifi setup, but i'm stuffed if i know what it is.
I'll have more of a play with it and post again if I can fix it.
Cheers.

I was having this problem with TVersity as well, until I went into the settings and told it to connect to the PS3, instead of having it set on auto. I have been problem free since.

Actually, I made the same change on TVersity yesterday but forgot to check the results. I have just tried it now - PS3 was already recognizing TVersity, I asked the PS3 to search for media servers and it came back with the "No servers found message". Hit the back button and there were no servers listed. Waited about 5 minutes and TVersity shows up as server.

I initially began sharing using WMP11 and changed over some months ago but I still had it's sharing option turned on. I've now turned if off so that only TVersity is used but still the same situation.

I'll keep looking for a fix

Another decent media server is Winamp Remote. I It is still in its beta stage but does the trick. Haven't had any problems what so ever and I am on wifi. I didn't even have to do a media search for it as it just appeared right away. I was able to stream Divx :). I'll have to try the 5 min wait for TVersity.

sli123,
I have the very same problem on my wired network.

Djbigup, good find on WinAmp Remote. Seems to be pretty trouble free to get going. My only problem is that the audio/video sync is off by 100ms or so. It seems to fluctuate. Maybe I just need a faster CPU or perhaps I need to fool around with some of the codec choices in the prefs.

I find that Mp3s stream perfectly. It does stutter once and a while when streaming videos though. Apparently its cause I'm going wireless... It also takes a good 10-20 seconds for it to load videos. I have yet to try it while directly connected to my router. Are you streaming over Wifi?

BTW I've tried the 5min trick and TVersity still won't show up? I don't know what I am doing wrong. I even try loading it through the PS Web browser and nothing. I also tried setting it to connect to ps3 only to no avail. My other PC's in the house can access it through their web browser though...

Is it a firewall isse? Have you been able to stream to your PS3 using WMP11? Also, do you have the media server Enabled on the PS3?

Just trying to think of what could be tripping you up.

Appreciate the help Yakko.

I do not have a firewall running although my router might need some port forwarding done I suppose... But the media server is seen on all of my PCs on the router. I haven't tried using WMP11 as I did not install it yet. I have the media server enabled on the PS3. I may just stick with Winamp as I have no problems it. The only thing that sucks is that it will only media serve video and audio. I really just want TVersity to work so I can transfer my wallpapers over.

I used WMP for a long time with good success. WMP does music and pictures, but no MP4, so video support was lacking.

I will install WMP tonight and check it out. Thanks.

I run Twonkymedia as a media server on Linux. Never have a problem with finding it. I've also played around with TVersity on Windows. No issues with that either. I use wired Ethernet.

Forwarding is only for connections originating outside your network. For instance, if I try to use my computer at work to connect to my web server at home, I have to have forwarding turned on so the HTTP requests are routed to my PC that has the web server running. But any of my internal PCs can see my web server, regardless of whether port forwarding is enabled or not.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help guys, but it looks like I'll just have to live with this issue :(
I've tried everything I can think of, including messing with the "Advertising period" and "Advertisement time to live" for the UPnP settings on my wireless router.
Cheers.

You should try using WMP11 or Winamp Remote instead. I have a feeling you won't have any problems.

I have the same problem pretty consistently. Anytime TVersity scans to update my library or if I go into a game or movie and then finish I lose the TVersity server on my PS3. If i restart the sharing service from within TVersity it pops back up again instantly on the PS3. I think it may have to do with how TVersity broadcasts itself through uPnP.

I had the same problem when using WMP11, which makes me think that it's something to do with the router (Netgear WPN824).

No media servers work at all? Also, did you try re-searching for the media server in the Xmb? I had to do a search for it to find WMP11 and then it started working.

They work, it's just that they were taking between 3 and 5 minutes before they would appear, just like thezone79 said in his post.

Anyway, I'm not sure what happened but the problem's now gone???
The server is showing up straight away.

A few days ago I changed the UPnP advertising details on my router but that didn't seem to work initially. thezone79, maybe you could try this and see if it makes a difference for you.

Cheers.
