I'm trying to help out a friend do some basic calibration on a Samsung LCD (LNT4065F), but as an owner of an RPTV, his set has one adjustment I'm unfamiliar with, i.e., a backlight setting. I presume this adjusts the brightness of the lamp in the LCD to best match the room conditions, but I'm guessing it's also going to influence the contrast and brightness settings.

So what's the best way to do the calibration - set the backlight first to a preferred level based on the typical viewing conditions, then adjust the contrast and brightness? If the backlight is changed later, is that going to mess-up the contrast and brightness settings? Thanks.

Hello Ross,

The backlight essentially adjusts the backlight of the display. This should be independent of brightness and contrast when implemented properly. That said, in adjusting the backlight, you will want to set it to a point where the ideal amount of light is achieved from the display after calibration.

With this in mind, set brightness and contrast and determine if the the light level of the display is appropriate given the viewing environment. If it is not, then adjust the backlight to compensate for the conditions of the room environment. From there, re-check your brightness and contrast settings.

Good Pictures! :)

Thanks Dave (and give my regards to Eliab - he calibrates my PRO530-HD)!
