I have just bough a 70 inch lcd tv from sony. The only reason I bought it because my cousin sold it to me for $2000 and it was so big and only 2 years old. I know it came out in 2004 but right now its still over $5000. The model number is kdf-70xbr950. It has 1080i, 720p, and 420p. I was wondering is there any products or cable where I can upgrade it to 1080 p. I read somewhere on some magazine that there are some machine that let you do that but it was expensive. I try to search for it but no luck.
Your display has a "native resolution" of 1386 x 788 progressive scan. That means that while it can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, &/or 1080i input, it converts anything that you feed into it to 788p for display on the screen. It can not accept 1080p input (which it would also just convert to 788p anyway).
You can read a little more about your display on Sony's website here (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11037791), and there's a cnet article about the virtually identical 60" model that you can find here (link) (http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/sony-kdf-60xbr950/4505-6484_7-30596951.html?tag=txt).

So I can watch movies in 1080i right?
So I can watch movies in 1080i right?
Of course you can- just not on that TV. ;)
If you have a movie or any other source that is input into to the TV as 1080i or any other compatible resolution, your TV will convert it to 788p for display on the screen. You can watch it from a 1080i source, but you will watch it in 788p on that TV.
Microdisplay TV's like yours have a native resolution at which they show everything regardless of the source. The native resolution of your TV is 788p.
Here's a Wikipedia article on native resolution (link) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_resolution). Don't sweat it- whatever you watch, it will look great on your TV at 788p.

Aww man that sucks I thought I can watch it in 1080i since it says it on the tv. I read somewhere that all the channels are going hd in 2009. Will I still be able to pick up those channels and view it like right now, or the tv will no longer pick up those channels since its going to 1080P?
I don't intend to be mean and sorry to fuss at you supaflyz, but at some time you must have been told that there's no such thing as a dumb question. But I say that it's not wise to ask a question if you don't intend to listen to the answer! ;)
That cnet link that I gave you above has a really good article on your TV that says, "Speaking of HDTV, the KDF-60XBR950" (which I've told you is the essentially same as your 70") "comes with an over-the-air digital tuner, so you can plug in an antenna and receive high-def stations in your area." That should tell you that your TV will pick up the digital transmissions (which will be 720p or 1080i, not 1080p since no broadcaster uses that resolution) just fine.
Hope this helps.
