I've looked all over and I cannot find a small, wide shelf to put on my dresser that I can then put my 42" plasma on top of, leaving space underneath for my cable box and DVD player. I want to spend around $50 or less and would like it to be dark (dark brown, black) in color. Has anyone seen something that would work?

Hey there, I know this is sometime after the fact, but did you ever have any luck finding such a shelf? I'm in the market for the exact same thing.

I was looking for exactly the same sort of thing, and i suddenly thought that what I needed was similar to what I use to raise my computer monitor, and slide my laptop docking station underneath.
SO, search google for a "monitor riser" usually used for raising a laptop or computer monitor, I have just ordered "3M MS90B Extra Wide Adjustable Monitor La..." from Amazon here in UK.
I had exactly the problem you guys had, and looking at the reviews from customers this item will be perfect.
This model goes to a reasonable height (15 cm) and will hold up to 40kg. Not all are so suitable for a TV.
This may not be the model you want, but at least the product is the sort of thing and you know what search terms to use. :D
I am new to this forum, so I cannot post any URL.

This could work for a single component, maybe 2 if the components are thin enough:

I'd go out and buy some 3/4" plywood and some screws and make the shelf myself. Definitely under $50, and you could even have the lumber yard cut it for you.
