I was going to wait a few days to start posting recommendation threads but this one won't require new pictures.

15 X 50' finished basement, 6750 cubic feet. Looking to get a good sub for $500 or less however I now realize, based on research, that this may be wishful thinking on my part. Looks like I may just have to buy one piece at a time.

For now, once we get the TV, I plan on getting an Onkyo TX-SR605 and borrow speakers from my neighbor until I can get GOOD speakers. I will need to purchase a Sub for the 5.1 OR 7.1, still undecided if should use the rear channel speaker wires for the pool table on channel B.

So anyway, I have a jack ran through the ceiling and down the wall to place the sub next to the Sofa and Love seat here.

OR I can always place the sub adjacent to the front channel speakers in the corner or next to a wall.

So what would be a good choice? Size, Brand and don't forget I'm not made out of money YET :p

Be easy on this NEWB, the last Home Theater system I had was a Dolby Pro-Logic setup with 5 speakers back in the early 90's

Thanks!

I would try to go with one of the eD subs which are definitely "bang for the buck" contenders.

Their finish is pretty ugly IMO from any of the pictures I've seen, but if you need decibels, and you need to fill a space, and you are on a budget, something has got to give.

For $600 base, you could go for the new A5 - 350

I think that could do ok in your room, but that should provide the fundamental bass that you can notice and enjoy. If you still feel you need more of that punch in the chest, you can always add a second later.

That ed is probably a good choice.
Also, there are two from Epik that may be worth checking out

In addition I think the MFW-15 from av123 would be a solid choice as well. I think it is right at your price range. You can search here http://av123forum.com/ and on this forum as well.
The only thing is, I am not sure about when it is going to be released.

Excuse my ignorance, but the bigger 900?

I checked out the eD and epik subs, Both look SWEET!

Thanks for the input!

I am basically doing the same thing. Trying to find a sub for my basement. I have been seriously considering the eD A5-350. I live in Louisville, so if I do pull the trigger on it, you're welcome to give it a listen. Unless of course you buy one before me :)

That is over your budget though. Yea, they both seem to be nice options in that price point.

Dradius,

Howdy Neighbor! My wife works in the ville. I'll take you up on that offer and I'll let you know which direction I go and when it will happen. We still need the TV, Receiver and all the other stuff. Just planning ahead.

Mike,

Yeah that's just a LITTLE out of my budget :p

I too have a space with approximately 6600 cubic feet in which I have incorporated my theater. Currently, I have dual original Ultras with a Samson amp sitting in fulfilling LFE duty but I was itching (aka upgradeitis) to try something else. I finalized my choices to the following:

92929

Dual SVS PB13-Ultras
ED 97-900
Epik Conquest

I am impatient when comes to spending money.

Despite reported amplifier problems, you just can't get the SVS PB13 in the time frame that I would like to see. There appears to be a waiting list with product beginning to ship late November for folks at the top of the list. I have enjoyed the SVS setup that I currently have and would do it again. ....but not today. Been there done that.

The ED is beast and I want it but it weighs too much. I just don't want to deal with it. They are working on a sealed 1300 watt 18" which sounds delicious but so did the SVS Plus/2 at $800(?) each. A couple of either of these would have been nice but impatience and putting around letting the SVS deal expire does not make a good combination. Plus, ED is growing their HT business and have some very good growing pains getting the product out of the door.

The Epik Conquest seems to be the ticket for me. It can fill a large room at a decent price and it will be here tomorrow, I hope. Although not technical in nature, the grass roots reports on the sub are above average. There is one "published" review of the unit but I usually lean toward "what da people say." I will give up coin over the experience versus numbers on a piece of paper every time. Although, it is just wonderful to know that the numbers back up what the people are saying. People's triggers are set differently.

Speaking of different triggers, the SVS offerings have beautiful finishes, Epik has a rosewood option and ED is black box only at this time but I am married to a beautiful woman and don't really need a pretty sub. In my space, a big black box could be hidden or made to blend in nicely, even the ED monster. It would be fun to tell someone that the A7-900 is not a kitchen table and them prove it to them.

Thanks for listening.

first things first. no self respecting manimal would admit to having a "love seat" in his man cave.

second, as for placement, the best technique is to put the sub in your chair and then crawl around on the floor until you find the best sound. then put your sub at that point.

third, $500 *is* wishful thinking for good sub-bass in that room. as for reviews, you might want to check out the craigsub thread, the avtalk subwoofer comparo, and the many reviews by secrets.

one thing that you may want to consider is whether or not your main speakers are going to have large (or lots of) woofers. if they cannot "slam" and you want that from your sub, the pb13-ultra is probably the way to go. if your main speakers can really slam, then you might be able to get away with a sub that is not quite as clear, but still has monster rumble. all the value leaders should be fine (hsu, svs, elemental designs, epik, etc.).

Hey there,
I live in Louisville too and have a 4500 cubic foot basement that I currently run a HSU VTF 3.3. It's a little over your budget, but you can get them for $650 shipped if you wait and buy from their B-Stock store at the end of each month. You can check mine out sometime if you'd like; I highly recommend it. Just PM me and we'll set something up.

Greg,

I just may do that. It's still going to be a little while before I get the HT all together but you just never know,

Thanks

I have over 6000 cubic feet and I have a HSU 3.3 in max output with a MBM-12. IT FILLS THE ROOM!

Bill,
That's what I'm adding next (MBM-12). Probably next month, but for sure by Christmas. From everyone I've talked to so far, including HSU rep, that will make the biggest impact for the dollar now that I already have a 3.3.
