I am thinking about buying the PS3 for my wife for Christmas. She mostly likes RPG's. Other then Final Fantasy are there other known RPG's coming down the pipeline?

From what I have seen White Knight Chronicles (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/856/856638.html) looks pretty interesting and I have heard good things about Folkore (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/826/826967.html) which has been described as something between an adventure game and an action-RPG.

White Knight Story is one and that is getting a lot of media coverage.

In this fantasy RPG, you take control of a boy who comes into the possession of an ancient artifact. The artifact gives him the ability to transform into the White Knight of the title, a 7-meter warrior from a time when such creatures nearly destroyed all of civilization.

There should be many RPGs for the PS3.

edit=^wow same time

RPG libraries take time to build up.

Give it time. The PS3 is definitely the system to get for them though. They will come in droves in about 6 months...most of the big companies are still releasing them on the PS2.

BTW, you can buy alot of top quality PS2 RPG's right now to tide you over till the rush...

Final Fantasy 12
Rogue Galaxy
Persona 3
Odin Sphere
Valkyrie Profile 2
Wild arms 5

Just a few that came out in the last year for the PS2...

Oblivion:GoTY edition will probably last you till the new FF's. :D

The ps3 is getting a lot of the niche JRPGs that the ps2 enjoyed, like Persona 4, Disgaea 3, and Star Ocean 4.

Then there are the major-leaguers as well, like FFXIII, FF Versus XIII, and White Knight Story.

Oblivion is about the only WRPG I can think of on the console.

the ps2/psp are probably better for "real" RPGs at this point.

for the ps2, you have all the old FF games

for the psp, you have games like jeanne of arc & FF:Tactics. FF7:Crysis Core to come out next year as well.

Any other tactics fans out there? I'm about 15 hours or so into the PSP version. :)

eternal sonata (previously 360 exclusive) is also coming to PS3 in 2008.

I like japanese rpgs, especially some of the less popular ones like Persona and the Tales series. Western RPGs like KOTOR were pretty good too, but I couldn't stand oblivion. I actually did spend enough time to get to know the game because of the good press, but I just didn't see the appeal at all. So be wary of that game! Other than that, I know square had planned three separate FFXIII games for the ps3. There was also that one multi-platform game, no news on it though. I'm sure at some point Namco will release a tales game for ps3.

There are a bazillion RPG on the PSP right now with more coming. Its certainly going to have more than any console will. Seems the Japanese are really embracing handhelds and the PSP is where all the RPG's seem to be landing.

Something about how handheld and rpg dont go together in my mind. They rework so that you can save anywhere and if you power down your psp and turn it back out without exiting the game it'll start right back up where you left off (dont ask me how it does that) but I cant get too deep into story when only playing 10 mins at a time. Plus most of the rpgs I see on the psp look like crap. Im still waiting on a used copy of tactics.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has kept me happy for months. The Game of the Year edition is out for no additional cost... go with that one.

It's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be (at least with tactics). I've owned a psp since last christmas (as a gift), and I've played it probably only for a few hours for that entire year. Think I put at least 20 hours into tactics so far. I wanted to get the new psp so I can output to tv (which doesn't look too hot), but it really isn't necessary.

you really out did yourself this time bumping a 3 year old thread

but anyway i'll answer your question because at least you didn't start another dumb thread.

Fallout 3

and

Bioshock

are two pretty good first person shooter RPG's

Borderlands is a FPS RPG that got good reviews, though I haven't played it myself.

Fallout 3 is very good, and Fallout: New Vegas is coming soon. The shooting is pretty loose if you try to play it like a twitch FPS, but there's an action-point-based targeting system that completely bypasses that problem if you choose to go that route.

Bioshock is wildly overrated, IMO -- excellent atmosphere, but the mechanics are merely solid. I haven't tried Bioshock 2.

It's ok. It's just funny that you went from one extreme to another.

If you are into swords/axes/etc. instead of just shooters I would also recommend Demon's Souls. Definitely read up on this game before you purchase it, because some people hate it while most love it.

Borderlands is the closest thing you will have to Mass Effect on the PS3. If you are a Mass Effect fan, then you will like Borderlands. Borderlands might even be a bit better due to the online which works great.

Add me to you friends list if you want to hook up in Borderlands. Funny enough, playing ME2 right now.

Yes, Demon's Souls is an all-you-can-eat buffet of awe and frustration. Definitely my favorite RPG of the last decade, and probably in my top 5 ever.

Yeah I didn't mean it to be mean, just thought it was an amazing turnaround of events.

I forgot about borderlands because I skipped that one for some reason... Wish I had the time to try it.

Demons souls is 3rd person but is by far my favorite RPG i've played in decades

Sonies, you're doing yourself a huge disservice by not playing Borderlands. It's fantastic. I definitely second Fallout 3, Demon's Souls, and Bioshock.
