I am trying to choose between the Epson 400 or wait for the 720. I would wait for the 720 to get some reviews but I am affraid I might miss out on the $500 rebate on the 400. This comes to about a $300 savings that I could easily use elsewhere. Do you think we will see any rebates or the street price on the 720 come down to the current price of the 400 after rebate anytime soon after its release?

Epson usually doesn't rebate at the beginning of the product life cycle, and dealers - especially Internet dealers, can't really sell much below their MAP. You may get a deal on a bundle with a mount / screen / cables, but the projector alone will probably be pretty close to MAP.

The 720 appears to have the 2.1:1 zoom that the 810 has, and the same better 10K:1 CR, and 100 more lumens. Both the 810 and the 400 tested brighter than spec in brightest mode, so I think they're pretty much a wash that way.

I'd say if the 1.5x zoom fits your needs, and you could use the $300 for other things, go for the 400. If you need the longer zoom, or really want those few more lumens or CR numbers, wait for the 720.

the 720 will be a step up from the 400 in performance.

In my honest opinion, you can't go wrong with the Epson 400. I chose this projector with the rebate and i am very satisfied. I too was worried about Epson coming out with a replacement for it, but after getting it all setup in my home, i'm glad i went for it and have been enjoying it. I am very satisfied with its quality and performance - I don't see it worth paying much more for better performance. Like you said, you could use the money elsewhere, and then perhaps a few years down the road you may move to 1080p anyways. More bang for your buck, that's how I look at it. Don't be afraid to go with the Epson 400, you will be very happy.

Bringing this back up...

PP now has a refurb 400 for $799. Is there a $500 difference between the two?

(ok, $400 difference when including the rebate, then how much for the bulb...)

I wouldn't say there is a $500 difference between the two...but then again I haven't seen the 720 in person. Still a very happy Epson 400 owner here :)

I have an epson 400,I have seen the 720 they are not nite and day different. if you are serious about viewing sports I would say its worth the cash difference. The 400 is nice, the 720 is just better in color contrast and overall pop.

Projector Central just commented on the dif between the two in a review of the 720.Seems they like the 720 a whole lot more than the 400.

Epson was selling a refurb (new bulb and full 2 yr. warrranty) for $699.00. I could not find a projector that I thought could touch this deal so I picked one up.
