View Full Version : So Now You Have A Player....
We all remember what was our first music casette or music CD for those that are in the younger generations. What was or is going to be your FIRST HD-DVD and/or BlueRay movie?
I preordered a combo player today and won't even see it probably until Christmas time, but I went out a bought my first HD-DVD movie today, Transformers!! I'm pumped to see HD movies on my Sony LCD! Never seen a HDDVD or BD movie.
I'm like a 6 year old on Christmas Day right now!
So what was or is going to be your first HDDVD or BD movie?

Well I bought my PS3 for games and didn't even purchase a BD for about 3 weeks, finally the addiction began with X-Men-The Last Stand. I am now dual format as a believe DF players will be the future of HDM.
First HD-DVDs were V for Vendetta and the first two Bournes all the same day.
Now my count is above 60 with it being pretty much 50/50 (BD/HD) depending on the week.
We'll find out in a couple of years.
:)
Nice! I hear ya! Waiting for all the prices to go down and the bugs worked out of the technology?
MichaelHDDVD 10-24-07, 09:51 PM Apollo 13 on HD DVD

First BD : Underworld Evo
First HD: King Kong
MovieSwede 10-25-07, 12:27 AM First BD: Speed
First HD: Batman begins
First DVD: Metro
First VHS: You only live twice
zero002021 10-25-07, 12:33 AM HD DVD: King Kong (It came with the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on).
Blu-Ray: Talladega Nights (It came with the PS3).
HD: Chronicals of Riddick, followed immediately by Serenity.
BR: Talladega Nights, what a horrible introduction to the format! X-Men 3 was my next one and it was a MUCH better transfer (and movie).
Man, a lot of you love Serenity? I've never even seen it!? Got to check it out!
Another question, could you tell the resolution or color differences between HDDVD and BlueRay in movies?
Also, if a HD movie is available in both versions, which one would you prefer?

Serenity, along with Matrix and Batman Begins, are the only movies I've double dipped on so far. If you are going to watch Serenity, don't forget to rent FireFly the TV show it was based that was unjustly canceled after only ~8 episodes.
george king 10-25-07, 01:15 AM Yah-E,
Like venk says, if you are going to watch Serenity, you should watch Firefly first.
You will enjoy Serenity immensely not matter what, but it is a much better movie if you have seen the series, and understand the "in jokes" from the series.
It was an underappreciated series.
My second HD DVD was Elizabeth, which is a brilliant movie (as is the new Elizabeth: The Golden Years), if only for the visuals.
Don Borvio 10-25-07, 01:26 AM HD: Serenity
*interesting how this was a first pick for many, and it was a double dip for me.
BD: Kingdom of Heaven
*a big reason for me to go Blu-ray, love the director's cut of this movie.

Not to surprising considering Serenity was one of the first HD DVD releases and was the PQ champ of the first batch. It still holds up pretty dang well today.
Serenity bought first, Goodfellas watched first.
I waited until I watched the DVD Entire TV series collection through before I watched Serenity.

Serenity was a great movie.
what do you mean resolution and color differences??? there is no difference, they both are 1080p and have the same 8 bit color scheme. The only difference would be artistic intent from movie to movie.
as for the last question. I choose whichever has the best sound between the 2 (being that 99.9999999999999% of the time if a movie is out on both they have identical PQ) and if that fails and they both have good audio then I just choose which covers match the cases better. If it matches with blue better, that's what I get and vice versa.
First HD-DVDs: Batman Begins and Troy
First DVD: Matrix!
First Blu Ray: Have yet to purchase, but will be looking to go dual format during the holiday season. The Blu-Ray titles I have been looking at are: the Descent, 28 Weeks Later, Black Hawk Down, Live Free or Die Hard, Stranger than Fiction, Apocalyto - and probably a bunch more! Man, I really should have jumped on that BOGO sale haha.
Aguapolo17 10-25-07, 04:51 AM First HD-DVD: Goodfellas
My first Blu-Ray WILL BE: Apocalypto (as soon as my pre-ordered Samsung BD-UP5000 comes in November or December)

The box set is currently selling at Target for $24.95
MrXpress 10-25-07, 08:12 AM First HD DVD was King Kong, came in the 360 addon box. First BR was Black Hawk Down.
But what will be the title universally associated with HDM?
LaserDisc had Blade Runner. Nearly every LaserDisc owner I knew had Blade Runner, and it was the first disk most people would reach for to demonstrate their system.
DVD had The Matrix. It came out at the start of mass adoptation. It looked great at the time, and it's "follow the white rabbit" feature was one of the first and only to utilize the format's interactive features during movie playback. Like Blade Runner, The Matrix was the title every friend of mine showed to demonstrate their system.
HDM's defining title may not be out yet. Or, it might become Spiderman or KingKong simply because those titles are bundled with the most popular players of each format.
dad1153 10-25-07, 08:35 AM Serenity bought first, Goodfellas watched first.

I bought "Serenity" on HD-DVD ages ago but still haven't seen it. Watching "Firefly" reruns on Universal HD before watching the flick (only three more episodes to go). Anywho, my first HD-DVD was Slither (starring "Firefly/Serenity" alumni Nathan Fillon) because I bought the HD-DVD Combo when I didn't have my 360 add-on player yet. Wanted to buy the flick but since I already knew I wanted HD-DVD I bought the combo so I could watch the DVD version first. Not the greatest PQ/AQ difference in the world (it's an HD-15 transfer) but soon after Batman Begins showed me the path to HDM righteousness. :)
I'm a long way from having a BD player (probably a used/cheap 60GB PS3) but when I do my first BD movie will be The Fly. I love Cronenberg and this is his career-defining masterpiece, which for once Fox treated right by not leaving out the many excellent bonus features released in the two-disc DVD special edition.
tiger roach 10-25-07, 10:21 AM First BD's were Apocalypto and Casino Royale.
HD DVD: Batman Begins, Troy, Goodfellas, Terminator 3
Blu-Ray: The Lookout
