View Full Version : For owners of both formats: Which Warner version do you generally buy?

It looks like there are quite a few people out there that own, or plan to own players for both formats. For you, which version are you buying if it is available on both formats, GENERALLY (i.e. Warner titles)?

I doubt many randomly picks up the first version of the movie they see in this case? Personally I pick up BD in the majority of cases, unless the HDDVD version is clearly better concerning soundformats, or perhaps it has some really good extras.

i usually pick the HD DVD version, but might move to BD since that player has the extended warranty.

eh...maybe i'll stick with HD DVD

Should be a answer saying HD-DVD if combo. Then I would have voted. I may be the only person who thinks combos are actually advantageous to HD-DVD's long term survival. I was upset that the recently released Carlito's Way and Transformers were not combos. I would really enjoy watching them in the bedroom.

I don't think I have any warner titles that use BD-J. If they do, I will probably get HD DVD. But so far, I have only bought and ordered Warner titles on Blu.

Because of the combo pricing I tend to lean BD.

I have both but I'd go BD.

Depends on the A/V quality, price, features, etc...

However, most of the WB titles I own are on HD-DVD.

It should be more interesting now as Warner has quashed combos and matched HD and Br pricing not to mention found a way to fake PIP special features on Blu Ray.

Get better audio out of the PS3 than the 360 so Blu-ray it is.

But I lean towards BD.

HD DVD with true IME!

If the HD DVD is a combo, I get the BR and save a few bucks. Same price, I go with the HD DVD, as I get better audio and the player is quieter.

Until BD resolve the Profile 1.1 mess and I endup with a profile 1.1 or 2.0 player I will by the HD DVD version.

I use my voting$ to indicate to BD that unhappy with all this.

Depends on the available features on each disk, but I tend to lean to HD-DVD, since I have multiple players throughout the house, whereas I don't want to own a 2nd PS3.

Since I've got the Samsung BD 5000 dual format player on order, I've started thinking about this because I'm going to start picking up some HD-DVD's soon. I'll probably go with whichever one gives me the best AQ/PQ. For example, if the HD-DVD version of a film doesn't give me a lossless audio track but the BD does, then I'm going with the BD. AQ/PQ trumps special features for me.

I was curious about this myself, so I finally did a tally of my HDM collection a few days ago. Apparently I own twice as many BDs as HD DVDs-- something like 130 to 60. This really surprised me, as I am neutral and never really pay attention to the color of the case when I buy a title.

As silly as it sounds, I go with Blu-ray Disc for the anti-scratch coating. I also opt for BD because the BDP-HD1 handles 1080p/24fps better than the HD-XA2.

Is everyone who voted really dual format owners or is the poll skewed with fanboyism.....

Edit:
I see it says plan to purchase so this poll is useless since it's not exclusive on experience with both formats and anyone with a perference can just vote.

Good points. I see my initial post can be misread. I meant people that own, or plan to own PLAYERS of both formats. Of course, the poll only appiles to people who ALREADY are buying movies in both formats. Hope my edit in the OP clarifies that now.

Also, concur, it seems some people that clearly are in one camp are using their vote to skew the results. Please, DO NOT USE THIS POLL TO MARK YOUR DISLIKE OR ENTHUSIASM FOR A FORMAT. If you only support HDDVD, or if you only support Blu-Ray, you have no business voting! There are enough fanboy poll's going around as it is.

Funny I have about the same numbers but opposite.

I tend to buy the HD-DVD version. No real in depth reason other than I like using my A2 as for playback more than the PS3. Most of the two versions tend to be reviewed equally. So unless there is a major price difference (ie unless it's a combo disc), I go red.

HD DVD for me. To be quite honest (and I know this is silly) the reason I lean towards HD DVD is the constant 13 year old game console driven fanboy posts that seem (to me) to always come from the BD camp. My own personal "pet peeve" that sent me over the edge is the stupid, idiotic, makes no sense "1080i is only half HD" talking point. When I see this, I want to grab the poster, slap his behind and send them to bed with no supper (not to mention take away his video games).

Hey thats the Sony way. Pee down your throat and convince you it tastes good. :D

I pick hd dvd because my first generation hd player plays the advanced audio vs my sammy1000.

I started off with HD DVD only (XA2) in September, but quickly became format neutral a month later with a BDP-1400. I have since found the audio just sounds better on Blu-Ray discs and have been buying accordingly.

that would make sense

have you compared Happy Feet (BD) vs Happy Feet (HD DVD)?

It's gone both ways with me.

I started off buying HD-DVD Warner titles, mainly because I felt the audio was a wash between the two formats and I like the IME features.

I then started buying only Blu-ray Warner titles when it looked like HD-DVD was sinking fast.

I then went back to buying HD-DVD Warner titles after the Paramount deal made me feel more secure about my purchases, and I still like the IME and menus better on my HD-DVDs.

It's interesting that combo discs seems to either encourage people to buy the hddvd version, or the exact opposite.

For BD it seems as the whole 1.1 profile mess is putting off a lot of people in these forums at least.

Personally, I prefer Blu, because I feel (and I'm not sure I can justify this feeling :) that it is the more viable format, and I want most of my movies on it.

I also find this true with my setup. PQ is about equal between the two formats but are dictated by the transfer quality.
My latest purchase was Transformers on HD DVD and FF4 2 on Blu-ray.
Transformers sounded compressed(this has been a complaint from a good amount of people - look in HD DVD SW forums or MB forums) and the surroundsound was lacking whereas the FF4 was more robust and made you feel like you were part of the action.

IME is nice but if the main part of the movie(PQ/AQ) is subpar, then I always get the one with the better "meat & potatos" presentation.

When I watched FF3 on HD DVD, I did comparisons between the SD version and the audio was slightly better but not a night and day difference. Better yes, but not "WOW" difference.

*I own the HD-A20 and BD-P1200 players.

i always buy the blu's, mostly because i've had more playback glitches on the xa2 than the ps3, and i really like the hardcoat on blu ray discs. still haven't scratched one.

bluray all the way. I wont pick up a single WB title on HD-DVD even the exclusive ones.

HD DVD unless Blu-ray is clearly better in some way. The first WB title I picked up in Blu-ray was Gods and Generals because all the extra features was on 1 disc. I may also pick up HP series on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray -- I'm such a PS3 whore. The PS3 is so much faster than my HD players it isn't even funny. IF HD DVD had a player as fast and as reliable as the PS3 then I would be in the "I don't care" camp.

Since the encodes are usually the same, and HD DVD offers more features (PiP, online stuff, etc), this is a no brainer.

...unless you can get them 2 for 1 on Blu. Low price is a good reason to pick one over the other.

I agree. Whichever version is cheaper, and gets released first since I really don't care which version besides that. I will agree that my PS3 is a tad noisier, but my Toshiba on the other hand is really slow.

You correctly point out that I have not done any comparisons. I am not arguing that one format sounds better or is better than the other. I am merely sharing my general impressions and reasons for my own recent purchases. I have not compared Happy Feet. What was your conclusion after doing so?
