View Full Version : Triple format (VHS, DVD, HDM) owned titles
MovieSwede 10-25-07, 12:39 AM What movies have you bought on at least 3 different formats? (BD and HD counts as one, and yes LD and D-theater can be listed aswell)
The Rock (VHS, DVD, BD)
Starship troppers (VHS, DVD, BD)
Speed (VHS, DVD, BD)
Lethal weapon (VHS, DVD, HD)
eapleitez 10-25-07, 12:50 AM The Matrix is all I can think of right now.
I don't think I ever really bought, or more accurately asked my parents to buy, VHS tapes, I just taped the movies off cable. ;) I did get Armageddon on VHS for Christmas one year, but I never bothered to buy the Dvd.
PULSAR3002 10-25-07, 01:54 AM Too many to name.
wormraper 10-25-07, 03:14 AM The Matrix
and when it comes out... Star wars.
BioSehnsucht 10-25-07, 06:30 AM What about LD ? :)
I have LD starwars, and nothing else. I have at least one thing on both LD and DVD but I can't remember what off hand.. I have T2 on LD and eventually I'm going to get one of those HD DVD imports of T2...
There's a few I have on DVD that I'll get on HD DVD or have already. Matrix, V for Vendetta, Tomb Raider, Sky Captain, Last Starfighter I already own on both... most of the rest I'll pick up as well as they come out
I don't have many VHS. But have a lot of LDs.
Rambo:first blood.
LD,UMD,2 dvd versions, HD-DVD
Would have to be the worst offender of multi-format owner ship
Lee Stewart 10-25-07, 06:59 AM Blade Runner:
VHS
LD
DVD
HD DVD (12/18):D
And the soundtrack on CD!
trondmm 10-25-07, 07:09 AM Hmm. I haven't bought VHS for ten years now, and of my 20 HD DVDs so far, only two are of movies that are older than this. I've had both of these movies on both VHS and DVD, though. The two movies are: 12 Monkeys and Terminator 2.
I've also preordered Blade Runner, and this will be my third triple-dip. I also intend to buy Top Gun on HD DVD soon. When I get a Blu-ray player, I'll probably buy favorites like Speed and Fifth Element (although I'm not sure if I actually had this on VHS) again too.
However, I don't think there will be much double-dipping on my part. When I bought a DVD-player, I very quickly discarded the VHS-player and rebought almost my entire VHS-library on DVD. I don't see that happening with Hi-def. I'll probably rebuy my favorite moves (40-50 or so), and keep the rest on DVD. If these movies were released in 1997 or earlier, they're likely to be a triple-dip, otherwise they'll only be double :)
I make exceptions, though. I bought the HD DVD edition of Mallrats, and even though I like the movie, it's not one I'd upgrade for the PQ alone. However, my old Mallrats DVD was a very bare-bones release, and I'd intended to buy the 10th anniversary DVD for a while. Since the HD DVD has the same content as the 10th anniversary DVD, I chose that instead. So, basically, the key to get me to upgrade my DVDs is to include lots of extra materials - preferrably HD-exclusive stuff :)
The Sting (DiscoVision LD, DVD, HD DVD)
Stargate (almost every LD release ever made - incl. AC3, DTS audio versions, japanese pressings, german PAL, US NTSC, then MUSE HiVision LD)
Dune (different LD versions, DVD, HD DVD)
- double dipped a good number of titles on HD DVD which I already had on LaserDisc
Oh, cliffhanger
LD FS,LD WS,SE LD, DVD SE, and superbit DVD. Can't wait for the BD of this one..
seldenpat 11-25-07, 07:43 PM Die Hard:
VHS
LaserDisc
DVD
D-Theater
Blu-Ray
Greg Kettell 11-25-07, 08:02 PM Back to the Future I bought on VHS, LD and DVD. I'd get it on HDM also.
Indiana Jones trilogy were purchased on VHS, LD and DVD. I'd get those on HDM also.
Blade Runner may be my first HDM tri-purchase (LD, DVD, HDM).
I never really bought much on VHS though.
Rob.D.inToronto 11-25-07, 08:10 PM 2001 was my first ever double/triple dip.
If Star Wars comes out...yeah...Aliens too...and Jurassic Park I and 2. Back to the Future...
Damn...I is a whore.
Bob Black 11-25-07, 08:19 PM I've owned Star Wars on Beta, 2 versions on VHS, 4 versions on LD (CLV, CAV, Widescreen THX box-set, Widescreen special edition box-set), and the box-set on DVD. I WON'T ever own them on Blu-Ray, so George better make sure they make it to HD DVD or my money train ends...;)
T2, Fear and Loathing, Happy Gilmore (never gets old)
I wonder if theirs any movie that has been on every format. Theirs a few close ones such as cliffhanger, rambo, star wars that come close but are missing a few here and their
Lee Stewart 11-25-07, 08:49 PM Blade Runner - 4 formats (VHS, LD, DVD and VERY SOON:D - HD DVD)
Bullitt
The Wild Bunch
Battle of the Bulge
The Road Warrior
iahawkeye 11-25-07, 09:08 PM Most of the movies worth buying 3 times aren't out on HD yet.
And given that it took F-O-R-E-V-E-R for many of them to release on DVD I'm not holding my breath.
PopcornReady 11-25-07, 09:19 PM Triple dips: Casablanca.
Double dips (and waiting to triple dip): Citizen Kane
Single dips (and waiting to double dip): Wizard of OZ, Laura, Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd., anything by Hitchock, and frankly too many more than I can afford. ;)
Reservoir Dogs (VHS, DVDx3, BD)
Speed (VHS, DVD, BD)
Terminator (VHSx2, DVDx2, BD)
Terminator 2 (VHSx2, DVDx2, BD, HD DVD)
Lethal Weapon (VHS, DVD, HD DVD)
Lethal Weapon 2 (VHS, DVD, HD DVD)
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (VHS, DVD, HD DVD)
Mallrats (VHS, DVD, HD DVD)
Die Hard (VHS, DVD, BD)

nick1091 11-25-07, 10:19 PM VHS, LD, DVD, HDM:
Goodfellas, Casino, Carlito's Way, Caddyshack, Coming to America
Robert Spalding 11-25-07, 10:28 PM what is this VHS you speak of?
sharkshark 11-25-07, 11:06 PM having just watched it again this evening on my new Kuro Elite, loving every second of the cleaned up image, I think it's fun to think of Full Metal Jacket
VHS, LD, DVD (first Kubrick set), DVD #2 (Second version of the same set), HD-DVD (first pressing), Blu-Ray (current spec-ed)
So, yeah, HEXTUPLE dip... Eesh...
Star Wars will be worse, but not by much. LOTR I own three times on DVD for god sakes, it'll only get uglier...
Still, these are remarkably great films, it's not like I'm buying Stargate over and over...;)
blainehamilton 11-25-07, 11:18 PM Lol. I sold all my vhs at a garage sale a couple of years ago for $1 each. Everybody was swarming over the table.
Someone exclaimed 'you can't buy these anywhere anymore!!! I can't believe you are selling them.'
LOL. Can't wait for the DVD firesale I have in 2009.
rdunnill 11-26-07, 03:49 AM The Omega Man.
Kram Sacul 11-26-07, 04:35 AM what is this VHS you speak of?
Yeah, no kidding. Who here was watching pan and scan VHS tapes while LD was alive and well? :D
MovieSwede 11-26-07, 04:48 AM Yeah, no kidding. Who here was watching pan and scan VHS tapes while LD was alive and well? :D
I was.
1. To young to own a LD player/or to young to afford
2. LD was a import format only.
3. The prices on disc wernt cheap when you had to import.
4. When i started with hometheater, LD had already been out for a while. So DVD was already in the horizon.
rover2002 11-26-07, 04:57 AM What movies have you bought on at least 3 different formats? (BD and HD counts as one, and yes LD and D-theater can be listed aswell)
The Rock (VHS, DVD, BD)
Starship troppers (VHS, DVD, BD)
Speed (VHS, DVD, BD)
Lethal weapon (VHS, DVD, HD)
You should add VCD.
MovieSwede 11-26-07, 05:20 AM You should add VCD.
Well if you want to add VCD you can, it aint a federal law or something.
AxlVanHagar 11-26-07, 06:56 AM Oh geez, the amount of times I've re-bought my movie collection lol Lets see off the top of my head
BladeRunner - Beta, VHS, LD 2X, DVD, BluRay and HD DVD pre-ordered
Star Wars Trilogy - VHS, LD 3X, DVD 2X
Indiana Jones Trilogy - Beta, VHS, LD 2X,
Halloween - VHS, LD 2X, DVD 2X, BluRay
First Blood - VHS, LD, DVD 2x, Blu Ray
Top Gun - VHS, LD, DVD, HD DVD
I could go on for quite awhile but that's enough painful memories for now:D
Fun thread!
Customgamer1 11-26-07, 08:46 AM I think it was the Matrix for me!
Bought it in crappy VCR quality, then upgraded to dvd and now have the Matrix box set in HD-DVD!!!!!!!!
SquirrelPhister 11-26-07, 12:01 PM Fight Club (VHS, DVHS, DVD)
Speed (VHS, DVHS, DVD)
John Carpenter's The Thing (VHS, DVD, HD DVD)
Terminator 2 (VHS, DVD, WMVHD)
SquirrelPhister 11-26-07, 12:11 PM Also, I have Jurassic Park on DVD, VHS, Hardback, Paperback and cassette tape (the score) though I'm not sure that counts.
Oh, and the T-rex with "realistic dino-damage"!!!
blainehamilton 11-26-07, 12:18 PM Lol. Don't forget Divx. Anyone here still have those in their collection?
Rachael Bellomy 11-26-07, 01:31 PM Stargate, I have on LD, Muse LD, 2 DVD's, and on Blu-ray. I've also seen the Squeez LD but it was loaned to me. T2, I've had two different LD's, 2 DVD's, D-Theater tape, and on Blu-ray.
There's wall art for LD's....pretty soon I'll need it for DVD's too.... ;)
Starwars (BETA, CED, LD(first version 4:3), LD(second version 16:9), LD(directors THX boxe set), DVD, DISH vip622 Hard drive)
Don Borvio 11-27-07, 12:03 AM Stargate I think is now a quadruple rebuy lol. VHS->standard DVD->extended DVD->BD, same when the US BD of Starship Troopers comes out.
Current 3x buys:
Reservoir Dogs
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
Goodfellas
Will be 3x buys when the HD version is released:
Spaceballs
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Braveheart
The first 6 Star trek movies, when they come out in HD.
Sigh, probably Star Wars 1-6 too, definitely if they put the original cuts of 4-6 in with the new and are remastered well.
Yeah, I like movies/shows with "star" in the title. I'll get a full HD set of the new Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1 probably sometime too. :D
As my sig shows I am still out of the HDM game for now. I have doubled dipped on many titles that I had on VHS and upgraded to DVD. These are:
Max Dugan Returns
Night Of The Living Dead
Night Of The Living Dead (Re-make)
Dawn Of The Dead
Day Of The Dead
Army Of Darkness
Evil Dead
Star Wars IV, V, VI
and many, many more...
These are some of the flicks I will gladly do the triple dip for:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f90/Zoodles95/Home%20Pics/DSC04550.jpg
Star Wars, Romero "Dead" films etc.
BTW, I have kept these VHS tapes around just because I like the box art. I had over 100 VHS movies and then once DVD came into my house that was it for VHS. There are still a couple of movies I have on VHS that aren't on DVD. Max Dugan Returns was one of the last ones to finally get a DVD release...
xradman 11-27-07, 12:30 AM Star Wars Trilogy (VHS, LD, DVD)
Jurassic Park (VHS, LD, DVD)
ET (VHS, LD, DVD)
Super DImensional Fortress Macross: Do You Believe in Love (VHS, LD, DVD)
I'm sure there are couple others. It's tough to remember what I had in LD and near impossible to remember what I had in VHS.
UxiSXRD 11-27-07, 02:37 AM I can't think of any triple dips. Had a few VHS (most of them letterbox) and DVD overlap and a few DVD and HDM overlap...
IntoTheBlu 11-27-07, 04:49 AM I wonder if one day there will be a VHS/blu-ray/hd-dvd combo player?
govschmo 11-27-07, 08:19 AM No UMD support, no buy for me :)
Way too many to list. 1 example:
Ghostbusters (VHS,DVD,UMD) Waiting on the HDM version.
Evil Dead series also comes to mind...so many editions.
sivartk 11-27-07, 09:16 PM So far, only "Happy Gilmore."
and to just show my wide variety of tastes...I'm waiting for "Singin' in the Rain" to come to HDM :) to complete the VHS / DVD / HDM string.
Nummer 6 11-27-07, 11:48 PM Star Wars - Super-8/LD (2x)/DVD/HD-recording (does that count?)
Mad Max - Japanese LD/UK VHS/DVD (2x)
Casablanca - PAL CED/LD/HD DVD
Akira - UK VHS/Japanese LD/DVD
Mission: Impossible - LD/DVD/HD DVD
2001 - PAL CED/LD/DVD soon HD DVD
The Thing - LD/DVD/HD DVD
Alien - VHS/LD/DVD/UMD
Aliens - VHS/LD/DVD
A Nightmare on Elm Street - VHS/LD/DVD
Basic Instinct - LD/DVD/HD DVD
Batman Begins - DVD/UMD/HD DVD
Training Day - DVD/UMD/BD
Luckily this thread is only about triple dipping on different media. So many movies could be added that were double dipped on LD (P&S and WS) and again on DVD (sometimes twice as well). Great hobby, isn't it?
MovieSwede 11-29-07, 07:37 AM I wonder if one day there will be a VHS/blu-ray/hd-dvd combo player?
I wonder if anyone of us that watch HDM, ever want to watch something on VHS?
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (VHS, VCD, DVD, BD)
Sonisame 11-29-07, 12:30 PM Terminator 2 and GoodFellas for me..
Sonisame
I've tryed watching a VHS its tough. Even my SVHS recordings hurt to watch. Although I do all my recodring with a DVD recorder for now. I may UG to the HR20 with direct TV as I'm due for a UG to a KA/KU dish. It would be eazy for the installer as I've got to lines to the dish already so all they would have to do is replace the dish. Which is on a solid 8x8 post. I have the 3LNB their now. But I want all the HD I can get.
I may also get a DVHS at some point. I would really like a BD/HD-DVD recorder. Hope thoses come to the USA soon.
spectator 11-29-07, 01:56 PM Blade Runner:
VHS
LD
DVD
HD DVD (12/18):D
And the soundtrack on CD!
A man after my own heart!
Blade Runner - first LD I bought, before I owned a player.
Blade Runner - first DVD I bought, before I owned a player.
Blade Runner - first HD DVD I bought (pre-ordered), before I owned a player.
Others include: Casablanca, A Clockwork Orange, Goodfellas, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Wild Bunch (all LD -> DVD -> HD DVD)
wormraper 11-29-07, 02:00 PM maybe not as many formats but easily dipped many times.
The first Underworld
Original DVD
2 Disc Unrated DVD
Superbit DVD (wanted that DTS)
German Import HD DVD unrated cut
Blu Ray Unrated Cut
Brian Hampton 11-29-07, 02:09 PM I owned very few VHS and VHS hasn't existed in my home since 1999.
If, however, Pink Floyd's The Wall were to be released (it's would be a Blu Ray exclusive due to Sony owning the rights at least in the USA) then that would be likely my only chance to get a title that would fit this description. I did own that movie on VHS for a short time.
-Brian
aaronwt 11-29-07, 02:40 PM Easily over 100 titles. I dumped my VHS titles in 2000 and my DVDs shortly. Any DVDs(except for my TV series and a few movies) I still have in my possession on JAnuary 1st is going out in the trash. Just like most of my VHS tapes did.
I'll have over 500 titles between both HD formats by then and I need the room.
Brian Hampton 11-29-07, 02:43 PM Aaron,
Where's your garbage can located?
I still have hundreds of DVD's, though I do sell back a few each time I go to the shops.
-Brian

That's what I need to do in December. I plan on trading them in at FYE for credit and also selling them to people I know for $2 each. Any left after all of that is being tossed.

At that point I usually donate mine to local charity for deduction.
General Kenobi 11-29-07, 03:22 PM The Thing - VHS, DVD HD-DVD
Trading Places - VHS, DVD, HD-DVD (is there any PQ difference between this in BD and HD?)
Die Hard Trilogy - VHS, DVD, BD
Total Recall - VHS, DVD, BD
Christmas Vacation - VHS, DVD, BD (where the hell is the first Vacation!?!?!? - I want!!)
I will buy Star Wars 1-6, Indy, Alien 1 & 2 and several other 80's flicks that I have on VHS and DVD (The Burbs, Vacation, Fletch and Better Off Dead to name a few).
aaronwt 11-29-07, 04:18 PM At that point I usually donate mine to local charity for deduction.
So they will actually take the DVDs? If so then I will defnitely donate them instead of trashing them.
How much per title are you able to deduct?
Geoff D 11-29-07, 06:15 PM I've bought Die Hard 13 times. VHS x5, LD x3, DVD x2, DVHS x2 and the Blu-ray.
T2 lags behind with 10 buys, one of which was the Squeeze LD, and the most recent one was the French HD DVD.
My all-time multiple dipper is Star Wars with 15 purchases in the last 10 years (only really got into SW around '97), but as that isn't on HDM it's technically not part of this discussion. But I wanted to mention it anyway. :D

Die Hard 5 times on VHS !!!???
Were you replacing broken tapes?
While Willis kicking arse is a guilty pleasure for a lot of us here, you *really* need therapy, dood ;).
At that point I usually donate mine to local charity for deduction.
...or donate to your local library for deduction, too.
While the Library can't put them in their collection for sharing, they sell what you donate during their periodic fund raising sales.
I think it's sad that libraries need to pay an extra extortion fee to the IP holders and can't share what you give them...
tkmedia2 11-29-07, 09:47 PM your missing the German WMV-HD version!:D
maybe not as many formats but easily dipped many times.

Nothing excessive. I take a percentage of the value new or use amazon used values when I can. Not alot by itself, but it adds up. Hospitals, churches, other charities.
tkmedia2 03-10-08, 06:22 PM I just noticed my multi dip of... notting hill??? WTF!
http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/4477/nottinggz6.jpg
transformers the movie(85), and Rocky are the only movies that I have owned on all three.
Too bad I put all my tapes in a black trash bag and dumped them. I wonder if they would be worth anything today.
right now, just Blade Runner, but that will change as more catalog titles get released on Blu-ray.
tkmedia2 03-10-08, 11:50 PM They are not in one location but, I'll try to assembly my Terminator 2.
BD, HD DVD, WMV-HD, D-Theater, x2 Squeeze LD, HiVi MUSE LD, UMD, 6x LD, 3x DVD, LTBX VHS, 35mm, D1.

Will that be HD DVD X2 soon because of the german Ultimate Edition? :D The closest to that I've got is possibly The Mummy because I've got it on VCD, DVD and HD DVD but I can't remember if I've got it on VHS too. Most if not all of my VCDs were new movies bought instead of VHS rather than double-dipping.
ChrisW6ATV 03-11-08, 02:05 AM The ones I can think of (Laser Disc/DVD/HD disc, either format; I basically never bought or rented VHS tapes) are:
Animal House
Purple Rain
Top Gun
Trading Places
Caddyshack
The Terminator 1 and 2
Lethal Weapon 1 and 2
Die Hard 1-3
Superman 1
Twister will be the next.
There will be plenty of others when they come out in HD. One movie will be a quadruple format buy when it comes out in HD, since I also own a Beta store-bought version as well:
The Towering Inferno
Partyslammer 03-11-08, 03:26 AM There's about 40 titles i can think of that I've bought on at least three formats. Mostly Harryhausen, Hammer horror and Toho Kaiju movies.
But I think "Close Encounters of The Third Kind" is the record holder for me:
VHS tape - (special edition version)
Laserdisc - original release (special edition version)
Laserdisc - Criterion CAV 3 disc version
Laserdisc - Criterion CLV 2 disc version
Laserdisc - 3 disc Box set ("Final Cut" ac-3 audio version)
DVD - Final Cut 2 disc set
DVD - All 3 versions, 3 disc box
Blu-Ray - All 3 versions, 2 disc box
T.B.
First blood Laserdisc,SE DVD, Ulitmate DVD, HD-DVD,Blu-ray,D-VHS and UMD.
Id like to get the CED and VHS for collectors sake
SugarBowl 03-11-08, 01:54 PM AC/DC Live at Donington
JOHNnDENVER 03-11-08, 03:06 PM Close Encounters is now a tripple dipper for me.
LD, SD-DVD, and now BD.
Quite a few years ago now, I gave away nearly all VHS that I had in optical formats.
