View Full Version : What do friends and family think of your huge tv screen taking up the whole wall? reio-ta 10-25-07, 01:29 AM . GrantMeThePower 10-25-07, 01:31 AM They love it. coldmachine 10-25-07, 01:34 AM Watching on 14ft wide with 10kW of Genelec NEVER gets old. My family and friends cant get enough, me too. At least half a dozen guys I work with went down the same road after seeing mine. Big games are fantastic and a special time for friends....The madness of sports with a posse and the concentration of a great film really are the essence of HT for me oldschool JAWA 10-25-07, 01:38 AM Everyone is blown away and things it is the coolest thing ever! Ofcourse all the wifes then become pissed because that's all their husbands talk about wanting after seeing it. There is no going back!!! kevivoe 10-25-07, 09:03 AM They want one too! scaesare 10-25-07, 09:43 AM I start getting spcific titles for Movie Nite requests. ;-) Buttabean 10-25-07, 01:40 PM Everyone is amazed by it :) Vidmaven 10-25-07, 01:47 PM We do movie night every week and it's always a big hit. As well as special sporting events i.e World Series, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Daytona 500 etc. Everyone that comes over always oooos and ahhhhs the first time they see my setup, some have to be helped to pick their jaws up off the floor. If you love movies and sports it's really the only way to go. Bigger is better! mark haflich 10-26-07, 08:56 AM The problem with sports and group watching happened last night with some people clamoring for the Red Sox and others for the Boston College game. Fortunately the DVR could record one while we watched the other. A split screen won't really work because the idiots want the sound for the half they are watching. Of course we styed up till two AM to play back the BC game. This caused, I suspect, another problem. None of the guys, I suspect, got any nookie last night. Gordon Shumway 10-26-07, 08:57 AM Many already have one so they don't even pay attention to it. mark haflich 10-26-07, 09:06 AM Reito-ta. You post all over the forum. You are committed to getting a FP. You know it. I know it. Some here might not. What's the point of your question? If everybody posted that their friends tried to get them commited to mental care, you still would go forward. :) Tolstoi 10-26-07, 11:12 AM The first question is always how much. Lone Cloud 10-26-07, 12:55 PM So far they think it's cool, but on mine, when I send the screen up, the whole room is back to where it started (except for the black screen housing up on the sofit and the hole in the opposite wall where the projector peeks through) In the long run, who knows? Likely home theater is a fad that will eventually pass. All fads and trends do. For now, I like it and my friends seem to also. sound dropouts 10-26-07, 01:23 PM I start getting spcific titles for Movie Nite requests. ;-) I get those, and I only have a 19 inch monitor. BUT, I have several large, bulky, loud speakers that shake my dorm. EVERYONE wants to come, even those that have decent tvs. As one who does not yet have a projector (I want one though) I say that every time I see a properly set up projector my mouth starts salivating and my hand creeps toward my wallet....only to discover that it is empty :( Such is life as a college student. Tom Pav 10-26-07, 02:54 PM as much as they love the 120" screen, it's the surround sound w dual 12" subwoofers that gets the real WOW BuGsArEtAsTy 10-26-07, 05:46 PM Yes. They love mine too. However, I have a dedicated room for it. Personally, I would never get a projector for my main living area (aka living room). sdlehman 10-26-07, 05:48 PM They love it! My brother saw mine and had to have his own. Stace welwynnick 10-26-07, 06:52 PM My sister and her new boyfriend are coming over for the weekend specially to watch some projection. We'll eat Indian, I'll get drunk, my wife will fall asleep, and the kids will still get up early the next morning. Nick :) dragonbud0 10-26-07, 06:55 PM I've converted at least 8 people in the lst 5 years in buying front PJs for themselves. They all thanked me for it, and their children. some of their wives did not care for them. westgate 10-26-07, 10:21 PM Watching on 14ft wide with 10kW of Genelec NEVER gets old. They all thanked me for it, and their children. some of their wives did not care for them. everyone who's seen my set up loves it but i think when it comes to having their own, a f pj is still a little too exotic for most folks. i hope that'll change. They all thanked me for it, and their children. some of their wives did not care for them. I can see how this could happen...seems that if you watch FP in a room with even the littlest light, the image can look sort of washed out...not as vivid as maybe the plasma's many folks see at stores etc...odds are the wives etc have been around mostly CRT, Plasma/LCD and to them it's a much bolder image, even in daylight settings... Now if you are in a basement or no windows environment and lights are OFF...FP can pop image wise. Gordon Shumway 10-27-07, 12:04 AM Maybe they cared about money more than the big screen experience. I know that my wife says she'll let me but she doesn't care about how big it is, and does think it's expensive. To her, and I think a lot of women, they don't care about how big, if it's 720p or 1080p. All they care about is being able to watch their soaps without having to go through hoops. Just like DVD, not everything is available on either HD-DVD or Blu-ray, but everything else is just on DVD. Then there is the whole "oh god, HD-DVD, now which player is that, it's the one without the glass front and that glass one is the other and then there's my DVD player, it's too much, I'll just get the DVD and not have to worry". Pretty much on target there sir...:) joerod 10-27-07, 12:12 AM Everyone likes my 120.5" indoor silverstar screen but they go nuts over my 242" outdoor blimpscreen! gsearles 10-27-07, 07:58 AM They want one too! Ditto what he said. Greg redbottom 10-27-07, 11:33 AM Ditto what he said. Greg same here Mr.D 10-27-07, 11:59 AM Its very gratifying when people who've heard we have a "big telly" come round for the first time. The first thing they see is a 42" plasma and they usually remark how big it is. I usually reply that's just the small one and drop the 9ft screen down in front of it! A few years ago people thought I was potty but home cinema seems to have gotten a certain cachet in these days ( shortlived probably) of consumer liquidity. I've had at least 3 pub conversations that revolved around everyone talking(bragging) about the size of their telly . I usually keep out of it until I'm asked at the end by the victorious 42" or even 50" owner. Mine' s about 9 I reply to dumbfounded looks. sound dropouts 10-27-07, 12:05 PM I know how that is. I now finally have a wife and a house I rent, so life is good. It really sucked back in my college days. My wife even says it's a go for the Stewart Ultramatte 150 110" 16:9, she likes that one better than the Studiotek 130 and called it crap. Who am I to complain, if she says it's a go for pretty much any Stewart 110" screen, I should be jumping for joy? Well, my girlfriend said she wanted an ht when she got married, and was wowed by the setups on this site. She does not care for pq or aq, but she still thinks it is cool. So I guess I chose my gf wisely! Kelvin1965S 10-27-07, 12:33 PM I'd hope that most casual visitors to our house wouldn't even realise that we have a 9' wide screen as it's hidden in a pelmet above a window. Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but I only show the screen to family and friends, rather than advertising 'flashy' equipment to workmen/ meter readers, etc just incase ....The PJ itself is hidden by a cover on the top shelf of a bookcase - all very 'James Bond' so visitors seem to think. Those that do see it have so far been impressed and usually comment on how sharp and clear the picture is ( I usually demo it with BBC HD channel). As it doesn't 'spoil' the room (their words) when it's not in use then it's the best of both worlds.:) M regular TV is only a 32" wall mounted LCD that the screen covers, so it doesn't seem too impressive on first aquintance. My missus likes it too although she isn't that interested in PQ, she just enjoys the film.:) westgate 10-27-07, 12:55 PM I'd hope that most casual visitors to our house wouldn't even realise that we have a 9' wide screen as it's hidden in a pelmet above a window. CptnRandy 10-29-07, 09:38 AM I have a dedicated theater - and while I was talking about it and building it, my friends called me crazy - literally! But now, I'm a genius - they all love it and wish they could do the same. I think integrating a projector and large screen into a living room or multi-purpose room is tougher. In that case, if you can hide it all and only display the screen when in use, you'll get the best response. Randy BuGsArEtAsTy 10-29-07, 10:36 AM Maybe they cared about money more than the big screen experience. I know that my wife says she'll let me but she doesn't care about how big it is, and does think it's expensive. Yeah, they're expensive... in that they generally cost 4 digit $. However, good quality 720p projectors are well under $1500 these days, and good quality 1080p projectors are well under $3000 these days too. My first 34" CRT widescreen direct view TV cost as much as a nice 1080p projector today. The fact that I got a 720p 3LCD projector for about the same price as a 720p 42" LCD TV in 2007 H2 says to me that projectors are a comparative bargain. That is no longer really true. With high lumen output projectors and gray screens, you can most definitely watch TV on a projector even when there is a moderate amount of room light. In fact, for TV I often intentionally turn on my lights (dimmed) at the back of the room, and just turn up the lumen output on the projector. Looks great. Now it's true that I can't watch a projector image in strong daytime ambient light without getting noticeable washout, but I do have another LCD screen as well. I would note though that to watch the LCD, I have to close the curtains too for that, or else it looks like crap. |
