Hello group.
I would search this but not sure what I am searching for. Let me tell you what I have and what I am trying to do:
Living room, Sony HD widescreen connected to TWcable HD DVR(Explorer 8300HD I think). TV is connected to DVR via composite connections.
What I am trying to install:
Looking to purchase a small HD flat panel to wall mount in my sunroom which is adjacent to the living room. My first thought was to run coax from the TV out on the Explorer 8300, back into the wall (second coax there for sat which is not used) up to the attic, across and down behind the new wall hung unit. (TV will have QAM tuner?)
I know this will only give me standard definition TV..So second thought, what if I want to duplicate the living room TV? There would never be a reason for the two to work separately on different channels. Is there a not too expensive way to move the HD signal from the living room to the sunroom? Talking about less than 30'. I think I read somewhere you can run HD through cat5? I would then need to some how split the signal at the cable DVR so the signal would go to the big TV and out to the sunroom. Is this at all possible? I think I understand it will entail running wires up the wall from behind the TV in the living room and out o the sunroom as the Coax can't be used to move this signal..Correct?
Any help or pointers to what I need to be researching would be most helpful..
Thanks!
John

I belive both Motorola and SA are about to offer new models so that you can have a second non PVR tuner for a second TV that can receive recorded programs from a PVR else where in your home over both units cable connection. I expect the cable companies to try and offer these units this winter.

First off you are probably hooked up via component (red, green and blue), not composite (single yellow connector) or your not watching HD on your main set.
Second, if the new set as a QAM tuner, split the coax before it hits the 8300, feed one to the 8300, the other to your new set and you should be able to tune whatever unencrypted QAM channels your cable company offers, they tend to be digital/HD locals.
If you want premium channels you receive via your 8300 and/or QAM is not an option, you can split the component feed and use equal length RG-6 runs to route it to your other set along with two more RG-6 cables for sound though you might have problems running 5 RG-6 cables from one location to another. Depending on the impact to PQ, you may need to use a distribution amplifier to split the component feeds also.
Or if the new set supports HDMI/DVI and your 8300 outputs it, you could use HDMI/DVI as an option. If it's DVI on either end, you'll need to run two additional cables for sound also, if you can go HDMI to HDMI, the sound will be included with the signal also.

That sounds really cool..I hope we see this out here in Austin w/ Time Warner..

Yep..Component, that was what I meant. Thanks..Wrong technology :-)
The cable signal is split behind the 8300 where it comes into the house via my Onque panel. I get basic cable to the other sets in the house so that might be an option. The new set does have a QAM tuner.
On the HDMI, yes the new set will have that, can you run HDMI that far? Do you use some sort of balun or adapter and use some standard cabling? Guess I should search for HDMI cabling.
That seems the least complicated as long as the box will send out componant and HDMI at the same time. I use the HDMI connection on the big TV for the DVD player so that connection from the cable box is vacant..
Thanks!

If HDMI becomes an option, you would want to order a pre-made cable to the right length. Check forum sponsor monoprice for a cable, they have great prices.
I'm not sure if your STB can output component and HDMI at the same time though I'm sure you could find the answer in the Recorders forum.

Thanks Matt.
Was just searching around and saw they come in some pretty long lengths and not too expensive. That would surely be the way to go. Now to go and find out if my box can transmit both signals at once..
Thanks!
