I managed to score one of the GameStop/EB 20GB PS3 models for $380. Just got it yesterday and hooked it up. I'm impressed that I was able to reuse my PS2 component cable as well. It does seem to have a defective Ethernet link light, but it's not worth sending it out for repair over that one issue.

I fired up Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Casino Royale and downloaded the GTHD demo. Overall pretty impressive stuff. The game selection still seems incredibly weak compared to my Xbox 360, but the machine itself seems awfully high tech and comprehensive and appears to be a cut above. The options for hooking up bluetooth and USB accessories and transferring PS2 memory card data really stood out. Remote Play looks interesting too. It has a lot of potential.

So given that I already own and enjoy my Xbox 360, what are good exclusive games for the PS3, and what's on the horizon? I'm receptive to most genres, but when it comes to sports I only really play hockey and GT style racers.

You might want to post this in the PS3 forum...

People seem to dig Ratchet & Clank, which looks pretty crazy, Uncharted looks promising coming out next month (really looking forward to that), Resistance Fall of Man if you like 1st person shooters.
If you don't have NHL 08 already for 360, it's a must buy on either system.

Pick up some Blu-Ray movies. They're the most enjoyment you'll get from your PS3 at this point. :p

Yes... I do own a PS3. :D

Exactly what I was thinking. You'll get about as much love here as a ford owner asking for advice in a chevy forum:p

Why didn't you pay $20 more for built in wifi and a bigger HD? Is backwards compatibility that important to you?

I have heard really good things about Resistance: Fall of Man and the new Ratchet and Clank. Metal Gear looks very promising but it looks like it got pushed back to March 2008.

I could be wrong here but I do not believe the 20GB version has Wifi built in.

Nothing to be sorry about it happens. I think it's great that the thread has remained civil, well for the most part.

My advice is to enjoy your new toy!

Seriously, get some game ( there is alot of nice game out there, even if some people don't believe it! And kick ass games coming out too!). Get a nice HD TV! ( played my Ps3 on 32" CRT tv for 3 weeks and it was too much for me!).

Create a PSN account, get the demos to try the games and play for free online.. I love NHL08 online even if me and my friends get our ass kicked often! :D

My Games : HS, DiRT, NHL08. All very nice planning to get R&C, GH3, AC when they come out, check those out!

I would suggest resistance. And getting cheap ps2 games. Some are cheap and a lot of fun. Plus blu ray movies. I tend to play more o the 360, cause I like achievements. But the ps3 is a well built machine. Just having the power supply inside is a nice touch.

Ps2 games that I suggest you find:

Downhill domination
SSX3
Mtx mototrax
racthet and clank uya
jetx20
breeders cup

The first thing I'd do is think seriously about returning that PS3 and getting yourself either the $499 60GB model or, if backward compatibility isn't important to you, the $399 40GB model. The 20GB hard drive is probably going to be too small once you start downloading some demos, games and videos; and all the other models come with wireless internet support and a universal card reader. The PS3 makes for a great multimedia hub so the extra hard drive space is especially worth the added cost if you ask me.

Regardless of which flavor you decide to stay with, the PS3 games lineup is pretty weak right now compared to the 360. For my money Resistance: Fall of Man is still the best, most playable PS3 game out there right now. F1 is also a very good but somewhat no-frills racing game; great sense of speed in that one though. DiRT is a fun off-road style racing game. Warhawk is well done but the complete emphasis on online play and total absence of any single player support irreparably tarnishes it in my eyes. The demo to Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction was a lot of fun and it looked great visually, but I've yet to play the actual game.

Congrats and good luck with your PS3.

I cannot recommend Everyday Shooter strongly enough. Better than all the other neo-dual-analog shooters available on PSN or XBLA. It's only $10, so there's no real consumer risk involved.

Also, DiRT on PS3 is fantastic (much improved framerate over 360 version).

Definitely download GT:HD. Free and tons of fun. Includes extensive leaderboards. Looks great. Lots of content for a free game.

Give Heavenly Sword a rental. Worth playing but not buying.

Warhawk is a ton of fun and easily worth the $40 price tag. Nothing revolutionary, but lots of online fun.

I'm not as crazy about Resistance as most people are, but it's worth checking out if you want to see what a PS3 FPS is like.

I have the 20gig, it's fine for me, I do download demos, but delete them after I am through. I have about ten ps2 games that have save files and about 5 PS3 games save files. I still have plenty of memory left. I would say pick up Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword. There are good games comming for sure. Plus Blu-ray movies ofcourse.

Maybe he doesn't need Wi-Fi? Considering he has a 360 I'd guess he doesn't need Wi-Fi or he already has a wireless adapter from his 360 he could use. And the hard drive is incredibly easy to upgrade so instead of paying $20 to lose BC and the ability to play SACDs and get a whopping 20gb more HDD space he could just as easily go buy whatever size HDD he needs. Granted it will cost more than $20 but it's worth it.

I don't need the 60GB really so I decided to save the $120. I plan on upgrading my MacBook to a 200GB 7200RPM HD, so that frees up a 120GB drive to put in the PS3. WiFi and card readers would also go unused. In hindsight, the chrome bezel would have been the most useful feature for me as it's hard to see the slot in a dim room!

Right now I have most of the cross platform games for 360 as that's where my friends are playing online. I agree Dirt is excellent. I sort of wish I had the PS3 version as I heard the framerate is more consistent. Ratchet & Clank is getting some good press so I may just try the demo. Resistance sounds like a no brainer but I may wait for a price drop as I already have a pretty rich collection of FPS games for PC and 360.

Everyday Shooter is on my radar, but I hadn't heard of Super Stardust HD. I'll have to read up on that.

Good recommendation regarding PS2 games. I have a lot of older PS2 and PS1 games and that's why I wanted the 20 or 60GB model. I play on a projector and 480i games looked terrible on the PS2. The PS3 does a perfect job deinterlacing. Some games still look a tad soft, but overall it's a major improvement.

Warhawk looks interesting. Is it n00b friendly? I like playing online, but can't commit too much practice time so I'm usually not that competitive. Team Fortress 2 is one of the exceptions. I do pretty well with that.

Well I found out about this after I thought my 20GB model was backordered (it had in fact shipped). http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5303673

Seems like a decent deal.

Resistance: Fall of Man- a solid 1st person shooter with a great concept behind it

The Eye of Judgment- great card game that the PS3 translates to animated battles to illustrate. Loads of fun, especially 1 on 1.

Dirt- Not sure if it is exclusive, but of the racing games it seems like it is on top of the pack. It is chock full of realism, both in detail and mechanics. A free demo is available on PSN.

That's 3 very different kinds of games that I've found extremely enjoyable. I'm also having a blast playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. However, that is also available on the XBox 360.

Warhawk looks interesting. Is it n00b friendly? Moreso than an FPS (like Resistance). It's got a much gentler learning curve than most online frag-fests.

Too bad about having the 360 version of Dirt already, the PS3 version is much smoother. The PS3 version sacrifices some course details and objects for a steadier framerate. Perhaps hunt down a sucker, er, I mean, person willing trade versions?;)
