I am trying to locate a retail source for Schott Amiran Water White glass for use in a projector port. I need a couple of 10x12 panes. I would prefer a dealer in Toronto, ON.

In investigating glass for a projector port, I found two that seem to do well. The "Water White" low iron float glass gives color purity, with no green tinge like regular glass and has much less loss and reflectance than regular glass.

Amiran Water White transmittance is rated at 0.98 for a 6mm thickness pane.

The next best I could find is Pilkington Optiwhite, rated at 0.91 for a 6mm thickness pane.

I want to use two panes of 6mm with an airgap for soundproofing effectiveness. I would prefer the Amiran because two panes results in 4% loss while two panes of Optiwhite results in 17% loss.

Would a 17% loss on a RS1 700 lumen projector be an issue? My guess is yes, but a projector port manufacturer I was talking to that uses Optiwhite says RS1 users have used his dual pane port without complaint.

My calculator says I get right down to 16 Ft L using 700 lumen projector with 17% loss on 2.35:1 - and you never get the rated light levels... and after 1000 hours on the bulb? It would likely be an issue.

Anyone know a source for this glass? Toronto prefered but I will import it if I have to.

May sound dumb, but have you tried calling the manufacturer and asking them?

Lol, yes, I have a call in to them and am waiting. It will be interesting to see if Schott North America head office calls back someone who wants two 10x12 panes retail. I can't believe their web page doesn't have a dealer locator...

How about Starphire- PPG Brand?

Its transmittance is specified (http://corporateportal.ppg.com/NR/rdonlyres/F34C34BB-EBB0-47A7-9545-43AF3080B447/0/StarphireEHliterature.pdf) as 0.91, which is no better than Optiwhite.

Two 1/4" panes are the same 17% loss.

Are you using one or two panes of Starphire? What projector do you use Starphire with?

Thanks, I looked into this. For soundproofing, I want 2 6mm (1/4") panes seperated by 4" or more. To ensure colour purity, low iron glass (aka Water White) is desirable. To ensure minimum light loss on a low lumen projector, I need high transmittance across two panes.

The Edmunds AR windows (http://www.edmundoptics.com/onlinecatalog/DisplayProduct.cfm?productID=1919&srtattr_26322=D#Products) are 1-3mm thick, and rated transmission is as low as 96%. A 96% transmittance gives you about 8% loss across two panes, which is not bad but not great. The reflectivity is not surprisingly excellent. However, it is claimed as float glass, which is just ordinary glass with an AR coating, which leaves me wondering about colour shift. It does not explicitly state low iron (water white), so I suspect it is not.

Amiran Water White is the only stuff I can find at 6mm thickness with high transmittance.

Fortunately I have found someone who might sell me some...
