View Full Version : $15 subwoofer?
Steve James 10-25-07, 12:27 PM Don't know if this is a mistake or not, but found this while searching for speaker wire prices...
$15 Subwoofer (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100596854&N=10000003+90401&marketID=401&locStoreNum=8125)
And here is the company's website - Dual (http://www.dualav.com/homesubs/index.html)
I'm sure that it's not a great sub even at $100, but for $15, it might work for someone...

You can buy four for $60 delivered!
Steve James 10-25-07, 12:43 PM You can buy four for $60 delivered!
Hell, I may buy some, put a cushion on top, and let the kids sit on them when not in use ( i stress not in use! :p )
Steve James 10-25-07, 12:45 PM You can buy four for $60 delivered!
Also, buying 4 is cheaper than buying 2 after shipping!
jvgillow 10-25-07, 01:07 PM Wow that is unrealistically cheap.
TrinhTD 10-25-07, 01:08 PM Must be a mistake ;)
Paisteman 10-25-07, 01:12 PM Might be ok, for computer use.
SpectralD 10-25-07, 01:35 PM This is too funny. I was planning to go to home depot to buy a programmable thermostat this weekend. I just saw this thread and figured I might as well buy it online and add in a subwoofer; the total was about $70 so I get free shipping. I placed the order a couple of minutes ago. I'll let you all know if they actually honor the order.
Paisteman 10-25-07, 02:10 PM Not the same looking box, but the model number on eBay is selling for around $100.00
I wonder how many they have in stock? Im thinking that you could order 64 of them for about $1000:eek:. You could just cover a wall with them, that'd probably be a hell of a subwoofer.
Mark Seaton 10-25-07, 02:19 PM I wonder if someone shoved a decimal point on accident!?! Order quick! ;)
jvgillow 10-25-07, 02:20 PM I told a few friends about the deal, if Home Depot actually ships these we will have 16 available for our amusement.
Funny, the other form factor is everywhere (with a front port) ... at around $100. I don't expect much, but I'm thinking with two I can have stereo lows :-0
Of course it's a price mistake, so it will be canceled... but it would be fun.
mailiang 10-25-07, 02:35 PM http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Control/fp/tcat/31104/SFV/30046/set_num/2
Same model and different picture.
Ian :D
jvgillow 10-25-07, 02:36 PM Is it just me, or is that front-ported version really ugly?
Paisteman 10-25-07, 02:39 PM Item is gone from online...check it now.
mailiang 10-25-07, 02:40 PM Is it just me, or is that front-ported version really ugly?
They probably changed it since it is different on the Dual site.
Ian
TrinhTD 10-25-07, 02:45 PM Out of stock now :D
Triaxtremec 10-25-07, 02:48 PM It says it out of stock right now, I tried contacting them to see when it would be available but yet to hear anything back.
jvgillow 10-25-07, 02:50 PM The first rule of price mistake club, is you do not call or email the company asking about the item.
aryohrling 10-25-07, 02:56 PM Haha, very true...makes them aware of the problem before we get the merch...I am looking forward to the SUPERwoofer setup...quality is not a thought when you have 16 in 1 room :D
cinemascope 10-25-07, 03:00 PM Note it's a passive sub, so it goes in line with the L&R which would be set for full range (large)
Even if it is a typo, the actual street of $100 for a driver, finished cabinet, passive crossover, multiple sets of input/output terminals, construction costs, and the logistics of bringing a product to market (packaging, shipping, warehousing, etc.) does not leave a lot of budget for ANY type of quality in any of those areas.
A few of those areas (manufacturing and logistics) are fixed costs with only moderate efficiencies to be gained... That leaves the elements of the actual product as the area where corners would be cut...
I would love to hear what a $15 sub sound like!! Buy I would imagine it sounds like a $149 sub with a decimal in the wrong place.
I love the post about using them as stools!! Classic.
I might have grabbed a couple to throw under my desk in the home office. I have a 2-ch receiver in here anyway, and I probably have upgraded crossover components, terminal cups, and better drivers laying around from previous projects anyway....
What am I saying, I should just pull out the table saw or call and get some project cabinets delivered....
Triaxtremec 10-25-07, 03:02 PM I contacted Dual to see when they were producing more not Home Depot.
mailiang 10-25-07, 03:05 PM I use to rep Dual when I was in the car audio business. Our dealers often used their radios as a bait and switch products. Their band pass sub products were very popular with kids who didn't have much to spend and they weren't all that bad. I manged to contact my product manger at Dual and he told me the picture on those retail sites were the 8 inch sub which they don't stock anymore. The Dual site pictures of the 10 and 12 are correct and so are the specs.;)
Ian
jvgillow 10-25-07, 03:16 PM Believe me I have very very very very low expectations for anything Dual (no offense to anybody who might be affiliated with them). This sub is supposedly active though, not passive.
TrinhTD 10-25-07, 03:22 PM Yup, it comes with a 120W RMS amp.
Paisteman 10-25-07, 03:22 PM I have some Dual outdoor speakers that sound fine.
jvgillow 10-25-07, 03:23 PM Got my order confirmation, no shipping confirmation yet.
mailiang 10-25-07, 03:31 PM Got my order confirmation, no shipping confirmation yet.
I just put mine in for 4! Good Christmas gift for my nephews. They may cancel the orders if , (which is what I expect) the price is off.

Sounds fishy as the item was in stock when I placed my order.

I think you were just a bit late.
jvgillow 10-25-07, 07:15 PM Yeah the HD website was weird this afternoon. For a while the sub showed out of stock, then suddenly the site went back to saying it was in-stock.
danieloneil01 10-25-07, 07:24 PM I didn't know HD had subwoofers.. Wished I was on here earlier..
SpectralD 10-25-07, 07:33 PM When I check my order status on the HD website, both my thermostat and my subwoofer have order status "Routed", but the shipping Provider and Tracking Number fields are still blank. So far so good. And talk about one-stop shopping...
mwolfe38 10-25-07, 11:40 PM damn i wish i would have seen that.. I bet it would be a lot better than the little peice of junk 3" labtec subwoofer i'm using for my computer.
mwolfe38 10-25-07, 11:42 PM the coolest thing about this thread is next time someone asks for a sub and has literally no budget we can refer them to the $15 subwoofer.
jvgillow 10-25-07, 11:43 PM If they literally had no budget we would need a $0 subwoofer. :p

Haha, yeah you're right on that. I havent seen someone start a thread on that but i bet someone will sooner or later. I guess we'll have to refer them to the DIY forum and tell them to look at the junkyard for old speakers.

LOL...the "Dual stool". :D
mailiang 10-26-07, 02:54 PM LOL...the "Dual stool". :D
I think I'll rebuild one of the 4 I ordered and try too beef it up since the cabinet and grill don't look to shabby. I read the service manual and it even comes with a phase switch and audio outputs. Not bad for the price. :D
Ian
Just got the backordered email.
"Thank you for shopping at homedepot.com. Unfortunately, an item you ordered has become temporarily out of stock. We will ship the item as soon as it becomes available. Your credit card will not be billed until the item ships.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.
If you have any questions, or would like to cancel your order, please contact our Internet Customer Service Center at the number listed below."
We'll see how long it takes them to actually cancel these.
jvgillow 10-27-07, 01:15 AM I received an email this evening for the cancelled order. One of my buddies checked and his was also cancelled.
Nice try, but HD would obviously lose money on these subwoofers by the time you factor in shipping even if disregarding everything else.

Was your order canceled or delayed because they are out of stock? The price still remains the same on their site.
Ian
jvgillow 10-27-07, 01:58 AM The cancellation email I received contained no details about why it was cancelled. Didn't say anything about backordered or out-of-stock.
Whoever made that mistake on the web site really should fix it pronto.
SpectralD 10-27-07, 08:23 AM Yeah, I just got the same email. My order was cancelled without any information as to why.
They are on the website for $179.95 this morning.
Just checked my order status on the web site. Yesterday afternoon it went from "Routed" to "Unexpected Backorder". Today it is still being processed and the status went back to "Routed".
No cancellation email as of this morning.
mailiang 10-27-07, 12:49 PM Mine says "Being processed" . I received a second email yesterday afternoon about being out of stock. We'll just have to see how this all pans out.
Ian
mwolfe38 10-27-07, 01:12 PM looks liek it was a typo and they aren't going to follow through with their mistake.
mailiang 10-27-07, 02:25 PM looks liek it was a typo and they aren't going to follow through with their mistake.
Why do you think they are out of stock? I bet once all the cancellation notices go out, there will be plenty available. ;)
Ian :D
grubavs 10-27-07, 02:53 PM I just wish I'd had more nerve at the get-go. I had four in my cart, but put purchasing off 'till the afternoon... they dumped my cart:(
DonoMan 10-27-07, 02:56 PM I'm not sure Dual is even worth $15. Their "subwoofers" are more like just woofers, with terribly low Xmax.
jvgillow 10-27-07, 03:01 PM Is there anywhere you can get 100 watt plate amps for $15 shipped?
Even those miniscule PC "subwoofers" with 4" drivers come in sets that are $20 or more.
TrinhTD 10-27-07, 04:41 PM I think the mod should close this thread.
The bottom line is it was a typo and they are not going to ship any sub for $15.

Their drivers aren't all that bad. We sold plenty of them, especially the band pass boxes. For the money they were pretty decent. Their head units on the other hand were below par and I wouldn't recommend them.

Could this also be a typo as well? This seems like a good deal for some patio speakers.

I doubt that is a typo.. The speakers are probably made of plastic and they do not include a 100 watt amplifier built in like the sub did. The drivers in them probably cost <$1 each.
Somehow I don't think they will sound as good as my Niles.

Then explain why all the orders are cancelled and the new price is 179 now.
mwolfe38 10-27-07, 09:00 PM I just edited my post. I forgot to quote the post i was responding to. I was referring to the question that asked if the outdoor speakers that cost $30 for a pair were an error or not. I didnt think they were given they are probably just cheap speakers. Specs say that are only 2 pounds a peice. $30 is a pretty cheap price, but not so much that i'd think it was an error.
Even so, for a 3-way outdoor, $30 is not a bad price for someone how just spends a little time on the patio or outdoors.
I know my Niles look almost identical to these. I also know that these are not going to preform the same as them but, for the money...
If someone only is only grilling once a week or entertaining a few times per year, these could be a great price break.
Put these little gems in conjuction with an outdoor sub like this
http://www.*******************.com/osd.html
and you should have a pretty decent outdoor setup for under $200.
Ikari Warrior 10-27-07, 10:58 PM I bought a pair of those $30 3 way outdoor speakers to use as cheap speakers to act as my rear surrounds for 7.1 since I didn't want to buy two more KEF iQs for two channels you hardly ever use. They sound pretty good, especially for the price, and were very comparable to the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble speakers I was using before the KEFs.
That's good to know. I think I would like to add an additional set of outdoor speakers on the other side of the house (deck and grill side). I have 4 Niles OS7.3 speakers on the pool side of the house. Driving them with a Sonance 260. They sound great but, I don't really need much audio on the deck/grill side of the house. Just some sound for minor tunes while I'm flippin' the burgers.

Amazon has the patio speakers for $36, shipped. Or, you can get these higher rated "full range" speakers for $24.95 (you have to buy something else to get over $25 for free shipping):

Look familiar? Those Dual home audio subs are actually made by Powerbass, another line I used to rep. They offered very good bang for the buck. Too bad my order was canceled. I would of like to have tried them out. :(

Hilarious thread - (I got the sarcasm btw) - a $15 subwoofer.
Buuuuuuttttttt - here in Canada we have a "Scanning Code of Practice" adopted by members of the retail council of Canada. It basically relates to items being scanned at the cash register. How it works is if the product you are purchasing scans for more at the register that what it was advertised for on the shelf (or labelled on the shelf if no adverstisment) you get that product for free to a maxium of $10.00. If over $10.00, you get $10.00 off the price you THOUGHT you were going to pay (hope that makes sense). However, that pertains to the FIRST item only. Mistakes happen, and if the store screws up - this is how they offer the customer the correction, but if the customer wants 2, 3 or 16 of them, after the first one, they would now pay the price that is being scanned at the register. This way it's a win win, as the store does not lose their shirts for a simple pricing mistake, but at the same time the customer gets a great price for ONE item. Everyone else should be SOL, as the retailer will at the same time correct the mistake.
It should be this way for online shopping as well. If a company like Home Depot, or anyone else, advertises a price on their website, they should honor that price, minus the addtitional $10 (making this a $5 subwoofer - almost got to that $0 one didn't we ;) ) but only for ONE. So if you ordered, two, or four, or LMAO - SIXTEEN of them, you'd have to pay the $179.99 for each subsequent one (if you indeed still wanted them - you should not be under any obligation to go ahead with the rest of your order).
This way, HD saves a bit of face, don't lose their shirts, and will be more diligent in the future on preventing mistakes like this.
Good catch btw - hell of a find!!!! Too bad there's no Internet price code of conduct thingy out yet - but you never know!
Raymond Leggs 11-04-07, 03:36 PM well if it sounds good then it can never be too cheap!
If they advertise at that price; they sould be obligated to provide at "that price". Life doen't work out that way.
Oh well, s!#t on us.....
Jakeman02 11-10-07, 01:07 AM I can't believe this thread is still going :). You guys should check out the "How to make a Bose speaker in under $5" thread in the DIY section. That should keep you busy for another month.
Alot of big companies sub-contract thier advertising/web site. That way the retailer has the option to say "Not responsable for typos".

Sub contracting work does not relieve the company of liability.
