View Full Version : Tight Dedicated HT--Do I need passive air exchange?

Hi All,

Build out is underway after 6 months of research on the forum. It is safe to say that I am now aware of 95% of the issues involved in a dedicated, well sealed, acoustically isolated theater.

I am using isolation ceiling clips, 2 layers of sheetrock with GG, dri-core flooring, and a mini split a/c (and heat unit I live just outside of Boston)

My basic question is this: I will most likely only use the theater for 2-4 people at a time, although I will have seating for 8 in my 18' x 20' room; most viewing will likely be for a single feature, rather than many marathon viewing sessions.

I feel that I have the cooling requirements met with the fujitsu 9RLQ, which is very quiet (per others' reports and the rating of 22 db in 'quiet' mode). While my previously finished basement rec room never needed heat or a/c (although it did require a dehumidifier), that was before I re-made the space into a tight room/dedicated HT.

So, while the fujitsu will cool (or heat) the room, I have no mechanism of air exchange. I am considering a baffle box with passive inflow and outflow of air (with in line fans to assist), but I am concerned about breaching my sheetrock/green glue envelope, and I question whether the fresh air exchange will be necessary for sessions lasting only a few hours at a time, with only (usually) 1or 2 inhabitants. FYI, I should also mention that the only equipment in the room are the speakers (and 2 passively powered subs) and a PJ; the amps etc are in another room.

Does anyone out there have a similar set up and either wishes they did have an air exchange system, or feels that the cooling when needed (more often) or heating is enough to keep things comfortable?

Thanks
Mark
