Just found this article on file sharing changes in Leopard by a guy I think has a lot on the ball, Glenn Fleishman. The implications for home theater use are obvious, and one thing I like about Glenn's piece is that he includes some good screenshots of the dialog boxes.

looks like they may have yanked TM wireless to Airport attached drives;
although even if true, I suspect they'll add it back on an update later.

http://db.tidbits.com/article/9261Sweet! While the home theater implications are nice, I hope that Leopard will solve two huge problems with current Tiger file sharing. Network browsing and client discovery are dismal in their current incarnation. Hopefully, having to "Go->Connect to Server->enter Server IP address" is a thing of the past. HOw many times have I had to walk someone through having to discover the IP address of a computer, to enter it in the Connect to server dialog, just to connect to a computer that can't say "Bonjour" properly, or consistently.

And AutoFS hopefully will handle volume mounting and dismounting issues much better than Tiger. Nothing worse than one of your co-workers, whom you've mounted one of their volumes, doing the 4pm ditch, and shutting down on you, while you're lost in thought over a big project. Go to write that shared Photoshop file out locally, and boom, app crash, work lost. Finder freeze. Reboot, before you realize that the server connection had been lost. The dreaded "disconnected" error. Finder used to be much smarter in the OS 9 days. I hate to say it, but AppleShare just worked (except for the ungraceful volume dismounting issues). Nice to see Apple try and bring back some of the old, to rework with the current, to make something new that hopefully will Just Work.

wildrock - Been running Leopard now for a couple of hours.... The network browsing is fantastic - quick; grabs the shared macs immediately and connects you as a guest; let's you connect as a different user to each mac; much, much, much better...

Not to mention Screen Sharing absolutely kills -- a spectacular and long overdue feature. I'm curious how it will work remotely -- will you still need DynDNS or equivalent if you are a home DSL or cable subscriber?

This one area where Windows Remote Desktop has been superior -- very, very fast (at least on wired networks) and have the ability to display the remote screen at different resolutions. Screen Sharing still needs some work in terms of speed & resolution flexibility.

It is.

Screen Sharing absolutely kills

The network browsing is fantastic

I've lived with Leopard now for two days and from a home theater perspective--especially with a house full of Macs and external drives--the improved Finder, and especially its shared Macs and shared screens, are worth the Leopard upgrade just by themselves. (Even if Front Row and Apple dvdplayer.app weren't also significantly improved, which they are.)

Anybody using the "back to my mac" feature successfully?

I have Back To My Mac working (BTMM) with my MacBook Pro + Mac Mini at home. I use an Airport Extreme at home, which I have configured according to Apple's instructions.

Note that I usually have to relaunch finder (option + command + escape; select finder; click relaunch) in order to get the Mac Mini to show up in Finder.

On two broadband 8Mbit connections BTMM flies. There's certainly some latency, but it far exceeds my expectations. Even on my ****** school wireless it's usable. I can monitor VisualHub remotely all day now.. it has really improved the efficiency of managing my media.

Well, I have the same setup as you with a Mini and Airport Extreme at home, Macbook on the road...but BTMM doesn't work, when connected to the internet through my Sprint USB wireless the mini does not show up in finder...

What are your settings in the "Sharing" pref panel?

Do you have the Airport Extreme setup according to Apple's specs for BTMM?

Obviously I have .Mac enabled, and screen sharing enabled from within the .Mac preference pane on both computers. I attached a screenshot of the sharing pane from the computer which gets accessed remotely.

Did you try my Finder relaunch trick?

I had "remote management" and "remote login" check, I'll try unchecking them.

What are the Extreme settings you mention?
