If you mean purchasing the satellite kit DIRECTLY from the dealership(And I will limit it to FORD, since this what you have), then YES, you are limited to the service they provide to their customers, which I believe is SIRIUS satellite radio.
That is who they are partnered with.
If you want XM, then you need to go out and buy a XM Plug and Play(this makes the most sense to me since it allows you to move the unit inside the house as well with it's comparable home dock) unit.
Down the line(if the merger happens for sure) BOTH satellite lineups will be available to customers since they will then be one company.
But that is a wait and see option which may never happen.
The FCC is REALLY PUSSYFOOTING about the merger.
The NAB(National Association of Broadcasters. Think Terrestrial Radio) is pouring MILLIONS(really DIRTY money actually) into trying to stop this merger from happening, and they appear to be winning.
They are obvious scared to death from the competition of satellite radio, or they wouldn't be spending millions to squash it.
Anyway, SIRIUS is what FORD offers it's customers. Buy a kit from them, and that is what you get.
There is a conversion kit(if you wanted XM) sold by other companies I think, but I don't know alot about them.
thanks for the info I went to a car, home audio store and am getting xm tomorrow.I am using the compatable radio and going with xm reciever to keep a clean install.I think for me xm has more channels me and the wife will like
