View Full Version : front firing or down firing for slab on grade mjg100 10-27-07, 10:02 AM Does it make a difference since low bass is non directional? JBLsound4645 10-27-07, 10:11 AM Does it make a difference since low bass is non directional? You mean use a marble or concrete slab and place it on the floor, then place the sub on top of it to reduce vibration into the floorboards as this is common problem under different frequencies in the lower register at different sound pressure levels. Yes it would make difference. http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/Brainstorm3417/raidersofthelostbreezeblocks.jpg http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=26655&stc=1&d=1185066467 http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/Brainstorm3417/JBL4645LFE.1subbassbreezeblocktest2.jpg mjg100 10-27-07, 10:30 AM I am talking about slab on grade (concrete). There are no floor boards to transfer vibration to. Most people couple their sub to the floor with spikes, but with concrete are you better off to isolate from the floor and if so are you better off with a front firing sub over a down firing sub? JBLsound4645 10-27-07, 10:38 AM Front firing, I can place the little sub pictured on the left hand side and flip it around to face forwards, which is how it is now. That picture was taken 4 months or so ago. So front all the rest of the speakers are facing fowards, now then. obiwon 10-27-07, 11:52 AM mjg100, just ignore him. Not all subwoofer drivers are made to be facing down. Make sure to find out about the one you are using. For low frequency, it shouldn't matter which way it faces. Some believe it sounds better to have it coupled to the floor but I find it better to be isolated with pads like Auralex (http://www.auralex.com/c_sound_isolation/c_sound_isolation.asp). Let yourself be the judge. JBLsound4645 10-27-07, 02:30 PM The same goes with you! mjg100 10-27-07, 10:26 PM I am currently using a front firing sub, but it is too small (10” ported NHT SW2P) for the room my system is in now. This sub is left over from my old system. The floor of my room is constructed as follows. Slab on grade with 2” x 2” firing strips glued and screwed to the concrete. On top of that I have 3/4”Avantech subflooring glued and screwed to the firing strips and then 3/4”oak flooring. The floor is very solid. My room is around 11,000 CF, but the HT is on the small end of this room 4,500 CF. Footage is high because of 17' ceilings. With this room I though that a front firing sub would be a better choice. I am going with an 18” sub in a sealed unit (4.5 CF) with 1,3000 watt amp. I plan on placing the sub at the front of the room between the two main speakers. This will place all of my front speakers, sub and tv in the same vertical plane. I hope this is enough sub for the room. System is used 90% for HT. If I think that I need more I will try adding the NHT sub to the back of the room rather than move it to the upstairs system. |
