View Full Version : Playing SACD discs on PS3
Greg.Ca 10-27-07, 09:20 AM Much to my dismay and dissapointment, I recently found that I am unable to play my SACD audio discs on my PS3. An error message is coming up telling me that even though the PS3 is capable of playing these discs, it will not on my system because the audio is fed from my PS3 to my Rotel processor via a optical toslink.
The HDMI from my PS3 is fed directly to my television (Sony 2007 model SXRD 60 inch 1080P).
It seems that the only way around this is to get a new processor that will support all of the new audio formats and has a HDMI 1.3 input. I'm not sure which models of processors will support HDMI 1.3 input? Ideas?
Is there any chance that newer models of PS3 will have a 5.1 analog out??
Will other Blu-Ray players play SACD discs via Toslink optical?:(

You can use the analog outputs, but then you only get two channels. I doubt we will get 5 channel analog outputs in the future. The PS3 would have to add the necessary DAC's. They are currently removing hardware from new models!
m_tyson 10-27-07, 09:47 AM Take a look at the Yamaha RX-V661 (my pick) or the Onkyo 605 for entry level. Both can be had new from authorized e-tailers for under $400.
deckerm 10-27-07, 10:15 AM Toslink (or coax for that matter) cannot send the DSD or PCM signal to anything. You must either use HDMI 1.2 or better that can pass DSD to a receiver or use analog outs. The fact that a pS3 is involved doesnt change the limitations of toslink in this case.
Neoguri 10-27-07, 04:01 PM Actually toslink can pass pcm 2.0 from lpcm tracks from blurays. You only need HDMI 1.1 or maybe even 1.0 to pass the sacd pcm to the receiver. The PS3 does not pass DSD.
Does that mean no Multi-channel SACD for PS3 even with HDMI connection with my Onkyo 805 receiver ???
deckerm 10-27-07, 11:14 PM yes, thru HDMI it is LPCM. The original post was about toslink and analogs. Outside of the new 40gb unit, you should be fine with SACD and HDMI

Yes, you can get multichannel sacd with the Onkyo 805.
Jonomega 10-31-07, 12:22 PM can the ps3 pass stereo SACD through COAX or fiber?

SACD signals can only be passed through, digitally, through HDMI.

damn, well there goes my idea of using the ps3 as a transport sigh...

The Onkyo TX-SR805 is supposed to handle multichannel PCM (and even DSD) via HDMI. See the PS3 SACD FAQ (http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html#_Toc177216800).
It will work with PCM because that's how PS3 currently outputs SACD audio. Let's hope they'll drop the conversion though.

you could still use it as a transport for stereo CD/SACD, but if you want multi-channel you would ahve to go through a receiver/decoder/preamp.

I dont have hdmi -> analog DAC. If it is true that SACD (stereo or multichannel) is only output on HDMI while CD would be output by Toslink/Fiber. I already have a good cd player, so that feature would be useless to me. :/

Not correct -- stereo SACD is output via analog ("Multi AV") out.

Yeah the point would be that i would want to output via digital so that I can use the external dac that I am thinking of buying.
Dave McKean 11-07-07, 06:10 PM Jonomega,
Get a Atlona HDMI to DVI + SPDIF adapter and you'll be happy.

Thats an interesting idea. 200$ is quite expensive for my cup of tea, but beggars can't be choosers eh? :p
The_Dark_Knight 11-16-07, 08:13 AM It looks like the PS3 can output SACD's over toslink via DTS now.
Yes, start from firmware version 2.0, PS3 can output SACD's through toslink.
jmscott42 11-20-07, 10:08 PM Is there a trick to enabling this? I am trying to play SACDs and am only getting stereo PCM. DTS is enabled in my PS3's outputs, and I've confirmed DTS works with DVD movies.
When I play multichannel it sounds like it's just passing through the front-L and front-R signals (in PCM).
I'm using Firmware 2.01, if that's of any consequence...
(Edit to add: It does appear 2.01 removes the DTS conversion. Whether this is a bug, or an intentional removal, seems unclear.. there are a couple people, self included, complaining at the Playstation blog, and the PS3SACD page's forums has people mentioning it)

Ah ha!
I was kind of skeptical about DTS conversion. I want pure DSD! :D
