Do any HD-DVD's have the THX Optimizer on them? I'm going to buy the HD-A2 today, and I was going to use THX to hold me over until I get a HD cal. disc. Thanks.

There is one THX Blu-ray (Terminator 2), but the test patterns are encoded incorrectly and are basically useless. You're better off buying Digital Video Essentials. The approach Optimizer takes is inherently flawed anyway. If you have DVE or another calibration disc on DVD, that should hold you over. The results you get should not be much different. Jim McC 10-27-07, 06:07 PM I do have a cal. disc for standard DVD, but I thought that was no good for HD? Can I at least use it to set contrast and brightness on my HD-A2? I just bought the HD-A2 today. Thanks. FredProgGH 10-27-07, 06:39 PM For all the basic white/black level and related stuff it should be just fine. DVE is nice because it has calibration specially suited to LCD/DLP type displays, which is what a lot of of us have these days. BTW I know Optimzer isn't perfect but for a quick, coarse down and dirty setup it always got me in the ballpark. rodzm 10-27-07, 06:55 PM There are currently no THX-certified HD DVDs. Correct me if I'm wrong but the French HD DVD version of Pan's Labyrinth is THX certified and I believe it has the optimizer. Matter of fact it is currently the only HD DVD that is THX certified JamonWithLove 10-27-07, 07:36 PM I own the French Special Edition of Pan's Labyrinth and it does indeed have a THX optimizer on the HD DVD disc. Research before you post false information. Capek 10-28-07, 04:38 AM There are currently no THX-certified HD DVDs. Not true Josh. Along with Pan's Labyrinth, both the Japanese HD-DVDs Fragile and Brave Story are THX optimized. There are probably more from Japan that are THX optimized (considering 50% of the japanese HD-DVDs I've owned have the THX test patterns), but those are the ones I have first hand experience of. |
