I just want to share my experiece. After late nights reading this forum, I'm getting closer to deciding which to buy. I mainly watch sports and a few SD programs. I've decided to get a 42 plasma -- I don't want a huge TV dominate my living room, and LCDs give dull picture IMHO. Below are the final cut of TV's I considered:

Panasonic 42PX7U - Very tempting at it's price point. Online prices are ridiculously low! However, the picture just doesn't pop out compared to the other TVs I saw. I'm pretty sure I'll have buyer's remorse. But at it's price point, it's a very good value. What finally steered me away from this TV was the numerous quality issues I read in the owners thread.

Panasonic 42PZ700U - Significantly better colors and pictures. And 1080p to boot. But, 1080i didn't look crisp. I find the edges a bit soft for my taste, probably due to upscaling. And I could see pixelation if I look closer. And for some reason, motion is not as smooth as I'd like to.

Pioneer 4280HD - Best I've seen so far. Picture was very crisp (being a 720p helps) with minimal noise and artifacts. Colors are stunning. I see some SDE but I think I can live with it. As confirmed by people in this forum, Pioneer has one of the best signal processors.

Now, all these observations are based on what I saw at BB. Not sure if I'm missing anything but I'm almost decided to getting the pioneer. I plan to keep it for years and my budget is $2K. This would be a huge upgrade from the 20-inch Daewoo crt I have now!

BTW, I ruled out Samsungs because of their poor SD processing.

Not quite, but almost there. The NECs are catching my attention now. A bit over my budget, but I'm not leaving any stone unturned on this big ticket purchase!

4280 is all you need. Had mine since July and wouldn't trade it for anything except a bigger Pioneer!

I'm a NEC owner (their golden year - 42XR4), but I believe the Pioneer Kuros have bypassed the NECs, which no longer use Pioneer glass. Rumor is they use LG plasma panels now.
