Last week I received the Jack Ryan Collection and after viewing every one of them I have to admitt that I'm pretty happy about the PQ and AQ. So I decided to post some screenshots from every one of the four films including some quite impressive HD vs. SD comparisons.

In the following days I will add more screeshots including a screenshot comparison between the DVD and the HD DVD of "Patriot Games".

The color timing is completely different between releases. I wonder what the director's intent was.

It looks like a rather heavy amount of DNR was used, but it's a very significant improvement nonetheless.

The first HD DVD shot of the soldier holding the quarter pounder - with cheese wrapper floored me! I wasn't expecting that kind of leap.

I wasn't really interested in this set at first. But those screenshot look awesome. I watched the Harrison Ford ones alot when I was a little kid.

I didn't understand alot of it. But it held my attention and I knew Dafoe was the shiz.

Might have to pick this up if they look like that.

Any word on the new release date?

Which is why I'm asking what his source was for the DVD shots (and he still hasn't anaswered). I don't want to find out that it was the first release.

I had planned on picking these up anyway, but man there is definately no doubt now...Great camera work BTW.

I used the following tools to take the screenshots:
GraphEdit, Avisynth, Virtual Dub, AnyDVD HD

All screengrabs I have taken are "true" screenshots taken directly from the disk without any compression or postprocessing (Except for the DVD-screenshots which are of course scaled to 1920x1080 for better comparison.)

The DVD-screenshots are taken from the German Collectors Edition which was released back in 2003. It should be nearly identical to the US-release which was also released in 2003. The only difference should be 720x480 (NTSC on the American version) vs 720x576 (PAL on the German version).

WOW, those mouse over shots really emphasize the difference even more!

The helicopter one is even more impressive. Look at the logos on the helicopter door or the writing on the building wall below.

I saw 2-sets of the HD-DVD collection at my local Walmart this morning. I already have the standard DVD set, so I was able to refrain from parting with $59.98.

BTW here are the video details of the 2 disks for the "specs above all else"-guys (read: Blu-boys ;)).

DVD: 720*576 @ 6.2 Mbps MPEG2 (obviously quite a high average bitrate, but the PQ can't profit much)
HD DVD: 1920*1080 23.4 Mbps Combined Bitrate (The Video should be ~ 18 Mbps MPEG4-AVC)

Wow, Clear and Present Danger looks gorgeous. beats the crap out of the HD broadcast that I saw as well. Damn you, Paramount. :D

From what I have read, Clear and Present Danger was the most dramatic of the four for improvement. Be prepared to be less impressed with the other three, although I'm sure there will be improvement.

I might have to consider getting this set. I only have "Hunt" on dvd and it's the non-anamorphic edition.

The cockpit pic is spectacular! I show the opening scene of Pitch Black athough not a top tier it shows the difference in detail betw SD and HD when you se the dials and levers. Great shots I can't wait.

Despit the slight look of DNR, these are really amazing HD transfers!

Man those CPD shots are stunning, top tier look. I was REALLY looking forward to these as CPD and HFRO are two huge faves of mine.

And to think I had this set in my hands Saturday at Wal-Mart. I tried to purchase but when I got to the register it said "unable to sell". I thought the checker was going to just entered the price, but she spoke to a manager and he said no we cant sell that - There must be something wrong with it.

Having never seen any of these movies I have to say I'm very excited and happy that these are/will be available on HD DVD exclusively. I was lucky and got the set early and having just seen The Hunt For Red October I am very happy to report that so far so good. The PQ is not perfect but very good for this old of a film. AQ is what really shook me, strong deep bass, heavy surround use, and each channel is used very accurately. Every speaker is ALWAYS being used. The best part of everything is the movie is excellent! I have already seen it twice in the same day!! :eek::eek: Looking forward to Patriot Games tomorrow.

Not as good or fresh a transfer as the others but the detail jump in the wide shot of the house is huge.

Holy Edge Enchancement in the DVD version Batman......

The HD versions are defenitly a step up.

Dang I knew I should have preorder to get this one early. Looks amazing can't wait for them to correct and re-release.

Pulled I believe because the box had text that indicated these are "Special Editions", when they are really just barebone releases.

I was at Walmart and they had 1 set left on Saturday. I should have picked it up. I was afraid that the PQ wasn't going to be good. Now I know better.

The Sum of All Fears appears to look terrible based on those captures.

Don't really care though since I hated the film.

The difference looks to be better than Hot Fuzz. Great caps. Keep up the good work.

Quite possibly The Sum of All Fears got a high def master made at the time of the initial SD DVD release and they're using that.

The others will have a new high def transfer.

So the films are older butthe transfer newer.

I hope Paramount decide to re-master & re-press this 4th disc. Maybe the typo delay will actually work in our favour?
